Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) that affect the lining of the colon, rectum, and other parts of the digestive track. IBDs can vary widely in severity, and may be helped by diet, medications and/or surgery. Serious complications can occur. These websites provide valuable information for people with Crohn's or ulcerative colitis, their family members, and service providers.
This excellent website is packed with articles about different aspects of IBD (e.g., basic facts, complications, medical tests, medications, surgery), current research developments, an "Ask the Specialist" section, and a "Find-a-Doctor" directory. There are also news updates, links, chapter information, and much more. The site carries the authority of CCFA's medical experts, but visitors should be aware that it is sponsored by several pharmaceutical companies (see our page on Evaluating Disability Information on the Internet

Researchers Discover Possible Link Between Crohn’s Disease and Spinal Problems
According to a recent study, researchers in Japan say there is a possible link between Crohn’s disease and interference to the nervous system from spinal misalignments. The research was published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Researc h and grew out of a previous study involving more than 3,000 patients with allergic diseases and over 1,000 non-allergic patients. It focused on the relationship between immune function, spinal displacements called vertebral subluxations, and how reducing those displacements resulted in improvement, and in some cases complete remission, of symptoms of Crohn’s disease. Crohn's disease causes inflammation in the small intestine but it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation causes pain and makes the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea.

Crohn's Disease
What is Crohn's disease?
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease. It is a chronic condition that may recur at various times over a lifetime. It usually involves the small intestine, most often the lower part called the ileum. However, inflammation may also affect the entire digestive tract, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, appendix, or anus. Crohn's disease is also called ileitis or enteritis.
What causes Crohn's disease?
There are many theories regarding Crohn's disease, but none has yet been proven. One theory suggests that some agent, perhaps a virus or bacteria, affects the body's immune system and triggers an inflammatory reaction in the intestinal wall. Although there is a lot of evidence that patients with this disease have abnormalities of the immune system, it is not known whether the immune problems are a cause or a result of the disease. Physicians believe that there is little proof that Crohn's disease is caused by emotional distress or by an unhappy childhood.

Recipes Who Runs All This? Links Welcome! I was first diagnosed with Crohn's Disease nearly ten years ago and, being a teenager at the time, I found it difficult to talk to others about the disease that did not have it. I created this site as a place to share stories and information - for teens, by teens - with Crohn's Disease, Colitis, or IBS. Apparently I've made a big impact here. I'm glad to do what I can to make a difference.
On this page, I will post experiences we teens have had with the disease. Any advice you may wish to pass on to others is also welcome. Since most all of us follow special diets, there is a recipe section. I have tried many of the recipes listed here, and several have become my favorites. Try them and let me know what you think. Please keep in mind that all of our diets are different, so what works for someone else may not work for you.

My Life With Crohn's Disease
by Matt the Webmaster So, your interested in who I am and how I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. I was diagnosed on September 1, 1994. I was 13 at the time and had spent the summer in severe pain. My intestines had swollen shut and I was totally dehydrated when I went into the hospital. Before I was diagnosed, the doctors gave me Zantac for an "ulcer", and one doctor thought that I was starving myself! I would sleep a lot more than usual and I didn't want to do anything. The worst part was that nobody knew what was wrong with me. Did I have some new, unheard of disease? Not even TV would leave me alone; I'd click around the cable and be greeted with: "How can I be dying of a disease no one's ever heard of?" from a soap opera. How depressing! When I was diagnosed, I had the usual selection of tests done, like the oh so fun Upper GI! To this day barium makes me gag. What was worse was the next day the doctor started me on vanilla Ensure, which is just too much like barium. Days later, I was released from the hospital with a disease I'd never heard of in my life and a lactose-free diet. I was to take six Asacol per day.

Crohn's disease usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum, but it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The inflammation can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Crohn's disease can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and to another type of IBD called ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. Crohn's disease affects men and women equally and seems to run in some families. About 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease have a blood relative with some form of IBD, most often a brother or sister and sometimes a parent or child.

What is Crohn's disease?
Crohn's disease causes ulcers to form in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract anywhere from the mouth to the anus. Symptoms include stomach cramps and pain that comes and goes, diarrhea and blood in your stool. Other symptoms include losing weight, feeling sick to your stomach, having joint pain and feeling tired. Some people who have Crohn's disease have severe symptoms, while others have less severe symptoms. Some people who have the disease have long periods without symptoms, even without getting treatment. Others with more severe disease will need long-term treatment or even surgery. Return to top
Who gets Crohn's disease?
Almost 500,000 people in the United States have Crohn's disease. Anyone can get Crohn's disease, but it's more common in women, whites and Jewish people. It is not known what causes Crohn's disease. It seems to run in families, but there is no known pattern of inheritance. Return to top

Microbial foodborne illness is the largest class of emerging infectious diseases. In 1999, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released the latest figures on the incidence of US foodborne illness considered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be the most complete estimate ever compiled. Seventy-six million Americans every year get food poisoning, more than double the previous estimate. In today's food safety lottery there's a 1 in 4 chance you'll get sick, 1 in 840 chance you'll be hospitalized and 1 in 55,000 chance that an American will die from foodborne illness annually. The CDC estimates 97% of foodborne illness is caused by animal foods. The latest US Department of Agriculture (USDA) survey, for example, found 9 out of 10 Thanksgiving turkeysover 90%are contaminated with campylobacter, the most common cause of bacterial food poisoning in the US. And 75% of the turkeys are contaminated with two or more food-borne diseases, most often salmonella as well, which are becoming dangerously resistant to many of our best antibiotics. Although thousands die from food poisoning every year in the United States, most sufferers only experience acute self-limited episodes. Up to 15% of those that contract salmonella, however, go on to get serious joint inflammation that can last for years. An estimated 100,000 to 200,000 people suffer from arthritis arising directly from foodborne infections each year it the USA.
