Charlotte has Cri du Chat syndrome. What is Cri du Chat Syndrome ?
Cri du Chat Syndrome ("Cry of the cat" in French) is a genetic disorder caused by the loss or misplacement of genetic material from the fifth chromosome. It was first identified in 1963 by Professor Lejeune, who also identified the genetic cause of Downs Syndrome. He described the syndrome after the sound that many of the babies and young children make when crying. This cry, along with some of the other notable features, is so characteristic of the syndrome that a doctor can usually identify the condition before a chromosome analysis has taken place. As well as the physical features, Cri du Chat causes a varied level of mental handicap. There are a few children who attend mainstream education, but the majority of the children need more specialised education. The long term outlook for children with Cri du Chat is quite good.

yes no Cri du Chat syndrome: Deletion 5p- syndrome; chromosome 5 short arm deletion Cri du Chat syndrome was first described by Lejeune et al (1963). Early research described the prevalence of Cri Du Chat syndrome as about 1 in 50,000 live births (Neibhur, 1978), although more recent estimates suggest a greater incidence of 1 in 37,000 live births (Higurashi, Masaaki et al 1990). The hallmark cat-cry is a core feature of Cri du Chat syndrome and is still regarded as an important early clinical diagnostic feature in most but not all individuals. Many infants tend to be of low birthweight and show marked hypotonia . Feeding difficulties are common and the associated failure to thrive may be the initial clinical presentation. Some infants may require enteral feeding, a process which may have to continue for several years. Certain facial and head abnormalities are also over represented: microcephaly , micrognathia, rounded face, macrostomia, hypertelorism with downward sloping palpebral fissures, low set ears, broad nasal ridge and short neck. Structural laryngeal abnormality and hypotonia are thought to be responsible for the cat-like cry.

Cri du chat Syndrome
Cri du chat is a rare syndrome (1 in 50,000 live births) caused by a deletion on the short arm of chromosome 5. The name of this syndrome is French for "cry of the cat," referring to the distinctive cry of children with this disorder. The cry is caused by abnormal larynx development, which becomes normal within a few weeks of birth. Infants with cri du chat have low birth weight and may have respiratory problems. Some people with this disorder have a shortened lifespan, but most have a normal life expectancy. Where does the abnormal chromosome 5 come from? In 80 percent of the cases, the chromosome carrying the deletion comes from the father's sperm. Additional Resources The Five P Minus Society

Contents of this page: Alternative names Chromosome 5p deletion syndrome; 5p minus syndrome; Cat cry syndrome Definition Return to top Cri du chat syndrome is a group of symptoms that result from missing a piece of chromosome number 5. The syndrome’s name is based on the infant’s cry, which is high-pitched and sounds like a cat. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top The cri du chat syndrome is caused by the deletion of information on chromosome 5. It is likely that multiple genes on chromosome 5 are deleted. One deleted gene, called TERT (telomerase reverse transcriptase) is involved in control of cell growth, and may play a role in how some of the features of cri cu chat develop. The cause of this rare chromosomal deletion is not known, but it is expected that the majority of cases are due to spontaneous loss of a piece of chromosome 5 during development of an egg or sperm. A minority of cases result from one parent carrying a rearrangement of chromosome 5 called a translocation. Between 1 in 20,000 and 1 in 50,000 babies are affected. This disease may account for up to 1% of individuals with severe mental retardation. Infants with cri du chat syndrome commonly have a distinctive cat-like cry. They also have an extensive grouping of abnormalities, with severe mental retardation being the most important.

A message to new parents
What is a genetic disorder? So what is Cri Du Chat Syndrome? ... More information A message to new parents
Children with cri du chat syndrome can lead happy, fulfilling lives as valued members of their families and communities. Many aspects of the condition described below will worry new parents a great deal but they must remember that not every child has every one of these, many are minor problems which can be dealt with and you will overcome your initial shock and fear of the future as you find ways to help your child develop and learn. As parents ourselves, our major concern is for other parents. We want them to know what we wished we had known when our babies were born. Not knowing enough about this syndrome caused us to experience more pain and confusion than necessary. We were often angry and frustrated as we tried to find out how to help our children. We want to give you the information you need and offer all parents and carers the opportunity to share what they have learned about living with cri du chat syndrome. We understand that the knowledge of what might go wrong in the future might be very frightening and make you want to hide from the reality but it can also prepare you in advance. We know that knowing what to expect helps you to anticipate and plan so that the future is not so scary. And best of all, knowing what is possible gives you goals to work towards and hope for the future. Knowledge can be frightening but it can also be empowering.
