COSTOCHONDRITIS
GENERAL INFORMATION: What is it? Costochondritis (kah-sto-kon-dri-tis) is when the tissue that connects your ribs to your breastbone becomes irritated. It is more common in young adults. It may take 3 to 6 weeks to get better. But, it can come back. Causes: Often the cause of costochondritis is not known. Signs and Symptoms: You may feel sharp pain in your chest and it may hurt when you breathe. The pain is worse when you move or breathe deeply and may be in more than one place. Care: No special care is needed. But, you DO need to be checked by your caregiver to make sure that your symptoms are not caused by something more serious. You may need to take over-the-counter medicine for pain. CARE AGREEMENT: Discuss your treatment options with your caregiver. You can work with him/her to decide which medicine and care will be used to treat your problem. You always have the right to refuse treatment.

Costochondritis
Costochondritis is a pain in the front of the chest. It comes from the area where the ribs attach to the breastbone or sternum. Sometimes the pain may be confused with heart attack pain. The cause of costochondritis is not known. It may follow a respiratory infection like a cold. Sometimes it may follow an injury or overuse. Even though adults usually have this, babies and children may also have it. The pain in the front of the rib cage may be dull and aching. Sometimes it is sharp and comes and goes. It may be worse when taking a deep breath. There may be tenderness if someone pushes on the area. If there is redness and swelling of the skin around the sternum, it is called Tietze's syndrome. Seek medical evaluation for any pain in the chest. Costochondritis is not a serious condition, but a heart attack is. Because the pain can be confused with a heart attack, tests may be needed for proper diagnosis of the problem. Treatment for costochondritis and Tietze's syndrome is the same. Activities or movements that make the pain worse should be avoided. Sometimes heat makes the pain better. A heating pad on low can be put on the area for 20 minutes 4 to 8 times a day. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin or ibuprofen can be taken. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions when taking these medicines. Aspirin or medicines that have aspirin in them should not be given to anyone younger than 18 years of age. Taking aspirin is a risk for a serious illness called Reye's syndrome. NSAIDs should be taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset. NSAIDs should not be taken by anyone who has been diagnosed with asthma, ulcer disease, or a bleeding disorder. Taking NSAIDs increases the risk of bleeding with trauma, dental work, surgery or if taking blood thinners (anticoagulants).

What is costochondritis?
Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects the inner end of each rib with the breastbone (sternum). It can occur in any age group and is most common in young adults. Exactly how common it is in the UK is not known but in the US costochondritis has been shown to account for 10 per cent of chest pain episodes in the community and 30 per cent of people with chest pain presenting as an emergency to hospital. Why or how does a person get costochondritis?
The risk of developing costochondritis increases with any physical activity that causes trauma or strain to the ribcage. It is a benign condition usually of short duration that resolves completely. Sometimes though it can recur or become persistent. What are the symptoms?

Costochondritis is an inflammation of the ribs, usually where they attach to the breastbone or sternum. A person with costochondritis may have pain in the front of the rib cage. Sometimes there is redness and swelling of the tissues around the sternum. The chest pain is described as dull and aching. The pain gets worse if pressure is put on the sore ribs. It is very important to have all pain in and around the chest evaluated by your healthcare provider. Costochondritis is not life threatening but a heart attack is. Sometimes a blow to the chest wall will cause costochondritis. Many times it is not known why inflammation sets in. Treatment for the problem is simple. It includes:
* anti-inflammatory medication like aspirin or ibuprofen,
* ice packs over the sore areas,
* avoidance of movements and activities that increase the pain,
* rest until movement becomes comfortable, and
* a gradual return to exercise, using slow stretching to avoid reinjury.

The first thing we need is a basic understanding of Costochondritis. I hope to give you an explanation as well as a personal glimpse into what it is like to have it. As I said on the index page I will not be giving credit here as that would be impossible. I have collected this information over time from various sources, source types, and from personal experience as well.
DEFINITION
Costochondritis is an insidious inflammation of the cartilage that attaches the ribs to the breastbone generally affecting the third or fourth ribs. It produces anterior chest wall pain associated with tenderness of the sternum and rib regions. Any of the seven costochondral junctions may be affected and more often than not, more than one site is affected.
ETIOLOGY
Costochondritis may be caused by trauma, as a result of a viral infection, or as part of an inflammatory disease process. Though, insidious in nature, repetitive minor trauma has been suggestive as the cause. But, generally the cause is unknown. Though I was 44 when I was diagnosed, it is usually diagnosed between the age of twenty and forty. It affects both sexes equally, but it is more prevalent in females.
SYMPTOMS
  • Qualities of the pain Sharp chest wall pain especially with pressure

Tietze's syndrome
  • The sternum (breastbone) is connected to multiple ribs (costal means rib). Each rib meets the breastbone at a seperate joint, or connection. If these joints become inflamed or swollen, the condition is known as costochondritis.
  • When there is pain, tenderness, and swelling in this area, it is known as Tietze's syndrome.

You can't buy Costochondritis at Costco
First off, let me say that Costochondritis is not anywhere near as harmful as any of the other diseases I've mentioned. It is painful, sometimes obscenely painful, but it actually causes no harm. Some patients end up in the ER because they think they are having a heart attack. The pain can be that sudden and severe. Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage of the rib cage where the ribs join the breastbone. There is no obvious swelling. It occurs frequently with autoimmune diseases.
