Kamoda, Tomohiro a; Matsui, Akira a; Ochiai, Naoyuki b Abstract:
We present the case of a boy with Costello syndrome who developed osteofibrous dysplasia during a phase of growth hormone therapy. The lesion and the accompanying pain disappeared after discontinuation of the therapy. Growth hormone is a known mitogen for some neoplasms and osteofibrous dysplasia has been reported to become aggressive. Thus, although osteofibrous dysplasia in Costello syndrome has not been reported before, growth hormone therapy should be used under close supervision in children with this syndrome.

June 21, 2005 SLU Plays Host to Families of Children with Rare Genetic Disorder
ST. LOUIS This week, families from around the world, whose lives have been changed by a rare genetic disorder that affects less than 1 in 30 million children, will come to Saint Louis University to share their stories, collaborate with medical professionals and academic scholars, and look for answers. Wednesday, June 22 – Saturday, June 25 the department of communication sciences and disorders, the department of educational studies in Saint Louis University’s College of Public Service will host the “Fourth International Costello Syndrome Conference.” SLU’s conference will offer services such as speech and language, hearing and educational evaluations, as well as conference seminars on this extremely rare syndrome. According to the BBC Health page, Costello Syndrome is a rare inherited disorder first reported in 1987 by a pediatrician in New Zealand. Typical features, which become more obvious as the child grows, include: short stature; redundant skin around the neck, palms, soles and fingers; curly hair; papillomata (small fleshy growths) around the mouth and nose; a characteristic facial appearance (epicanthal folds, depressed nasal bridge, large earlobes); pigmented skin; cataracts; and premature greying of hair. The worlds oldest person with Costello Syndrome, who is 37-years-old, also will attend the conference.

SPS AND COPS OFFER BA/MAPA DEGREE A new degree offering has been announced that will allow students to earn a bachelor's degree through the School for Professional Studies in criminal justice organization or organizational studies with a minor in public administration. Hours earned for the minor may be applied to courses toward the graduate degree. Once students earn their bachelor's degree, they will apply to The Graduate School. If accepted, students will complete the remaining hours to earn the Master of Arts in Public Administration, a degree offered through the department of public policy studies in the College of Public Service. The BA/MAPA program is designed for working adults with classes planned for evenings and Saturday mornings. This accelerated degree offering is the first such partnership between SPS and COPS.
