in partnership with Read the full article with a Free Trial of HighBeam Research Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by asymmetric cortical and extrapyramidal signs including progressive asymmetric limb rigidity and apraxia. Other commonly occurring signs include alien limb phenomena, frontal release signs, postural instability, cognitive and/or memory deficits, aphasia, apraxia of speech, and dysarthria. An extensive literature review revealed that although speech and language deficits are common, they rarely are described in detail. The current study examined the speech and language characteristics of 13 cases of ...

Corticobasal Degeneration
This article submitted by Theresa Roberts on 10/10/95.
My father too has CBD and has had it for approximately 5 years.
I am his primary caregiver as he can no longer perform any daily
activities; eating, shaving, bathroom, shower, standing, etc.
He recently has been declining mentally as well. He can no
longer speak as coherently as he once had, and he drools
constantly. He has currently been on several parkinson type meds that help. Through NORD (Nat'l Organization of Rare Disease) Network program,
I was given a list of names of others who either have this disease
or are caregivers of someone with CBD. In addition, I was put
in tourch of a person who has created a CBD Network support
group. If you are interested in any information, or would like to correspond, please let me know. My address is listed below or you can respond to this article with yours and I will get in touch with you. It really helps sharing information with others. I have learned a lot of things that help make my dad more comfortable. Sincerely

I was reading the articles posted about CBD and it seems there are many questions about the nature of this disorder. I have conducted a comprehensive review of the literature a on CBD and would be more than happy to provided references for several articles which present answers to many of these questions. If anyone is interested in learning were they can find published articles on CBD, you can e-mail me at: rcndarcy@uvaix.uvic.ca. Next Article

Outline of the symptoms and treatment for corticobasal degeneration (CBD)
http://www.lnrf.com/education/cbd.html
Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD)
Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) also called Cortical-Basal Ganglionic Degeneration or Cortico-Basal Ganglionic Degeneration (CBGD) is a rare progressive neurological disorder that may have various presentations. Figure 2. Figure 1. CBD may also manifest with dementia, bilateral parkinsonism (slowness or decreased spontaneous movements, stiffness) that usually does not respond to treatment with dopaminergic agents. At present, the dementia form of CBD is difficult to diagnose in life. There are no specific laboratory tests for the diagnosis of CBD, but neuropsychological studies, electrophysiological studies, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), and positron emission tomography (PET) scans may be helpful in supporting the diagnosis. The CBD may show asymmetries in the cortex (Figure 3). Figure 3.
