What is emergency contraception?
Emergency contraception is a form of birth control. You can use this method if you have had unprotected sex. For example, if your regular birth control fails (the condom breaks during sex), if you forget to take your birth control pills or if you have sex without using any birth control. There are 2 types of emergency contraception. With the first, you take special doses of birth control pills. With the other, an intrauterine device (also called an IUD) is placed in your uterus (or womb). Return to top
How do I use emergency contraception?
The first kind of emergency contraception, sometimes called the "morning-after pill," is taken in two doses. You can start taking this kind of emergency contraception right away after having unprotected sex. The sooner you take it, the better it works, but you can take the first dose within 120 hours (5 days)after having unprotected sex. You take the second dose 12 hours after the first. Your doctor may tell you about other ways of taking this medicine. There is a brand of pills made just for emergency contraception. It is called Plan B (levonorgestrel). Plan B contains only progestin.

133. Alaska Emergency Contraception Project
Current information on emergency contraception, including how it works, how it is administered, why it is important, and where to obtain it in Alaska.
http://alaskaec.org/
The Alaska Emergency Contraception Project In December 1998, the Alaska Emergency Contraception Project was formed. It is a coalition of women's health care providers from the private and public sectors. The project is modeled after the Northwest Emergency Contraception Coalition, which was launched in 1997. What is emergency contraception (download Powerpoint)
Emergency Contraception, often referred to as "the morning after pill" can reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected vaginal intercourse. Emergency contraception pills (EC) can reduce the risk of pregnancy up to 120 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse. They work best when taken within 72 hours - within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse, the pills are 75 to 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy. They work by preventing ovulation or fertilization of an egg. If fertilization already has occurred, they prevent the egg from implanting into the uterus the medical definition of pregnancy (1).
If you have had unprotected sex within the last five days and want to prevent pregnancy, call 1-888-NOT-2-LATE for a list of providers in your area.

He and his allies will no doubt attempt to turn this victory into a mandate to advance their assault on social issues, such as women's health, environmental protections, and equal rights. In Bush's second term, we may see multiple U.S. Supreme Court retirements, possibly as early as January. The replacement of one or two justices could tip the balance of the court against Roe v. Wade and affect the future of other social issues. Our future is on the line. And we cannot win this battle if we don't work together. Say NO to Bush's Agenda.

Contraception and Sterilization
Christians have always condemned contraceptive sex. Both forms mentioned in the Bible, coitus interruptus and sterilization, are condemned without exception (Gen. 38:9–10, Deut. 23:1). The early Fathers recognized that the purpose of sexual intercourse in natural law is procreation; contraceptive sex, which deliberately blocks that purpose, is a violation of natural law.
Every church in Christendom condemned contraception until 1930, when, at its decennial Lambeth Conference, Anglicanism gave permission for the use of contraception in a few cases. Soon all Protestant denominations had adopted the secularist position on contraception. Today not one stands with the Catholic Church to maintain the ancient Christian faith on this issue.
How badly things have decayed may be seen by comparing the current state of non-Catholic churches, where most pastors counsel young couples to decide before they are married what form of contraception they

Several safe and highly effective methods of contraception are available to prevent unintended pregnancy. In the United States, most women of reproductive age use contraception. In 2002, 98% of women who had ever had sexual intercourse had used at least one method of contraception; only 7.4 percent of women who were currently at risk of unintended pregnancy were not using a contraceptive method. The most popular method of contraception was the oral contraceptive pill, used by 11.6 million women in the United States, followed by female sterilization, condoms, male sterilization, and other methods of contraception. About 6% of women have ever used emergency contraception. Since 2000, several new methods of contraception have become available in the United States, including the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system, the hormonal contraceptive patch, the hormonal contraceptive ring, a 91-day regimen of oral contraceptives, two new barrier methods, and a new form of female sterilization.

Protestant, Jewish and Catholic thinkers respond to Pope Paul IV s encyclical, Humanae Vitae, in which the Pope spoke out for monogamous sexual relations
http://www.firstthings.com/ftissues/ft9812/articles/contraception.html
Contraception: A Symposium
This year is the thirtieth anniversary of the encyclical of Paul VI, Humanae Vitae , routinely described in both the general and religious press as "controversial." We asked Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish thinkers to respond to one or more of the following questions:
  • Do you judge the argument of Humanae Vitae convincing with respect to contraception? How do you think the argument could have been made more convincingly? In view of developments in the last thirty years, was Paul VI right about the moral and social consequences of contraception? If you agree that the message of the encyclical has not been effectively communicated, why is that the case?
—The Editors Panelists
Harold O. J. Brown
Thirty years ago Pope Paul VI issued the encyclical Humanae Vitae ("Of Human Life"). It came as a chilling blast to liberal Catholics and others-the population control establishment, for example-who hoped for a major change in the Church's stand on artificial contraception. With the Second Vatican Council still a very recent memory and aggiornamento still in the air, many Roman Catholics as well as others expected the Pope to "bring the Church up to date" and validate at least some forms of artificial birth control, which many Catholics were already practicing.
