Our theme this year is the "Circus, Circus" or "Cirque du Sille". Start thinking about those balcony decorations and Vaudeville acts early. The Contraception 21st Century Camp Meeting and Vaudeville Revue is Contra's biggest programming event. It takes place Saturday evening. It is a show consisting of skits, songs and whatever else our creative attendees can come up with. If you want to entertain the circus audience send a letter to the attention of Becky Rickart at the same address that you'd send your membership into which is: Contraception P.O. A visit to the
Museum of
Contraception
By SUSAN McCARTHY Photographs by Janssen-Ortho/Toronto, Canada T he world contains many museums of erotica (the largest is in Amsterdam), but just one Museum of Contraception. I was alerted to its existence by a paragraph in "Where TORONTO," a freebie magazine I found in a hotel room last May; the notice seemingly attracted no one but me. Skipping the Sky Dome, the CN Tower, and museums of ceramics, sugar, and shoes, I made an appointment to view the museum, located at the Janssen-Ortho Pharmaceutical Company, manufacturer of contraceptive products. I was the only visitor that day, alone and captivated. Although the museum consists of fewer than a dozen display cases in a quiet hallway, the cases are full of unusual, impressive objects and labels with sonorous language, all testifying to the utter human determination to unlink sex from its most obvious end. I took out my notebook and wrote "Occlusator Anticoncipiens et Prophylacticum." "Barbasco dioscorea composita." "Sanitary G.U. Bag." There were actual exhibits of contraceptive methods outlined in the Ebers Papyrus (1550 BCE), by Al-Razi (860-930) and Avicenna (980-1037). Acacia. Crocodile dung. Queen Anne's Lace.

Contraception: Why Not? JANET SMITH Why does the Catholic Church keep insisting, in the face of the opposite position held by most of the rest of the modern world, that contraception is one of the worst inventions of our time? Thirty years ago the case in favor of contraception seemed eminently reasonable. But the widespread use of contraception has had so many devastating effects on marriage, the family, and society as a whole, that the Pope's predictions about it make him now look, it retrospect, like a modern day prophet.
My topic for tonight is the Church's teaching on contraception and various sexual issues. As you know, we live in a culture that thinks that contraception is one of the greatest inventions in the history of mankind. If you were to ask people if they wanted to give up their car or their computer or their contraceptive, it would be a hard choice to make. It's really considered to be something that has really put us, greatly, into the modern age and one of the greatest advances of modern medicine and modern times. Yet, there's this archaic church that tells us that, really, this is one of the worst inventions of mankind. According to the Church, contraception is one of the things that's plunging us into a kind of a disaster. So we have this great polarization: a world that thinks contraception is one of the greatest inventions of our time and the Catholic Church that says it's one of the worst. I am going to try to help people see tonight why the Church's teaching certainly deserves serious consideration.

Emergency contraception
Emergency contraception can be used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or the failure of another birth control method. Emergency contraceptive pills (morning after pills) can be used up to 100 hours (three to five days) after unprotected sex, but the earlier they are used the better. A post-coital IUD can also be inserted to prevent pregnancy. This can be done up five to seven days after unprotected sex. Neither of these methods helps protect you against sexually transmitted infections
Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECP)
Emergency contraceptive pills may contain estrogen and progestin, or progestin alone. These are the same hormonal drugs contained in some birth control pills but at a different dose. When used for emergency contraception, these hormones interfere with ovulation to prevent a pregnancy. They may also change the lining of the uterus so a fertilized egg won't develop. These pills are not perfect, but they cut the risk of pregnancy by 75 to 85 percent. ECP is very safe. There is no evidence that these drugs cause harm to a pregnancy if they fail. You should not take the pills if you think you are already pregnant; they will not end a pregnancy that is already established.

Update on Contraception
Part 1: Traditional, Barrier and Surgical Methods
Never have Americans had more choices available for birth control, and even more will soon be on the market. Yet despite the widespread availability of contraceptives, and contraceptive techniques, it’s estimated that at least 50% of all U.S. pregnancies are unintended. Why? “About half of those unplanned pregnancies are due to failures of the particular birth control method used,” says Kathy A. King, MD , Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. “The others are because women or their partners are not using any form of contraception at all.” According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publication “Protecting Against Unintended Pregnancy: A Guide to Contraceptive Choices,” approximately 10-15% of all sexually active women use no birth control, and about 85% of them would be expected to become pregnant within a year. If used correctly, most of today’s over-the-counter and prescription contraception methods are between 75% and 99% effective, says the FDA. The choice of birth control depends on a variety of factors, Dr. King says. These include individual health, how often people have sexual relations, the number of partners they have, and if and when they want to have children. In addition, issues such as religious and/or moral belief systems may come into play.
