Definition and Causes of Constipation
Constipation is passage of small amounts of hard, dry bowel movements, usually fewer than three times a week. People who are constipated may find it difficult and painful to have a bowel movement. Other symptoms of constipation include feeling bloated, uncomfortable, and sluggish. Many people think they are constipated when, in fact, their bowel movements are regular. For example, some people believe they are constipated, or irregular, if they do not have a bowel movement every day. However, there is no right number of daily or weekly bowel movements. Normal may be three times a day or three times a week depending on the person. In addition, some people naturally have firmer stools than others. At one time or another almost everyone gets constipated. Poor diet and lack of exercise are usually the causes. In most cases, constipation is temporary and not serious. Understanding causes, prevention, and treatment will help most people find relief.

... The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs After food leaves the stomach, it enters the small intestine, the beginning of the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract. As it passes through, the major portion of digestion and absorption takes place. Undigested food residue, debris, and some water then pass into the large intestine, or colon, where almost all of the water absorbed, and the solids are compacted as feces. This fecal mass is stored until distention causes a reflex muscle movement that propels the mass into the rectum for defecation and excretion through the anus. Normally, ingested food passes through this system and its waste products are excreted within 35 – 70 hours, resulting in a normal bowel movement 3-12X/week. However, the defecation reflex is rather weak, and easy to ignore. We ignore the reflex for many reasons, including inconvenience or lack of private, clean, or comfortable bathroom facilities. After a few minutes, the reflex goes away, and will not begin again for several hours. During this time, the fecal mass becomes drier and harder, resulting in constipation. Constipation Constipation describes bowel movements that involve excessive straining, difficulty, or discomfort; or that occur less than twice a week. Although occasional constipation is common, chronic or persistent constipation and associated straining at bowel movements can lead to more serious problems. Complications of chronic constipation may include hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and damage to the muscles and supportive tissues of the anus and perineum. The most common cause of constipation is a diet lacking fluid and fiber; in combination with poor bowel habits, such as routinely delaying defecation. Other causes of constipation may include:

Home remedies for constipation
Home remedies to help relieve your child's constipation, and how to help prevent it.
Constipation in children can be a painful, insecure, embarrassing experience for them and can lead to some serious medical problems. This does not have to happen, and in the privacy of your own home you can help your child through this embarrassing process. If you have problems dealing with such things, just remember it is worse for your child, and your job as a parent is to do everything you can to help. It is important for a child to have proper nutrition to help make sure they stay regular and do not become constipated. This requires a diet high in fiber. Foods such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes (beans), should be served with every meal. Kids may not have developed a taste for these kinds of food items so it is up to you to not only make sure they do get plenty of them, but also to try different ways of preparing them to find ways that your children do enjoy eating them. Try a vegetarian cook book to learn new, flavorful ways to cook vegetables. Try different kinds of spreads on grainy breads - there is more than just peanut butter out there! Fruit butters, such as apple or apricot are readily available. Children should also get plenty of liquids to drink everyday, especially clear liquids such as fruit juices and water. When a child is constipated, push lots of water!

Encopresis (Constipation and Soiling)
What is constipation? When your child's bowel movements are very hard, difficult or painful to pass, and/or occur less often than every 3 days, it is called constipation . This may happen if your child doesn’t eat enough fiber, doesn’t get enough exercise, or doesn’t drink enough liquids (especially water). It can also happen if your child ignores the urge to poop because they are embarrassed to use the public bathroom, or don't want to stop playing. Constipation can make pooping painful, so that your child may hold their poop in to avoid a painful bowel movement. Functional constipation means that the constipation is not due to an underlying disease process.  What is soiling? Soiling, overflow incontinence, or fecal incontinence , is when liquid or formed poop leaks into the child's underwear.  The child has no control over this leakage. It usually happens when a big, hard blockage of poop from constipation is blocking the rectum . This is called an impaction . When a child has an impaction, poop can leak around the blockage into the underwear.

Constipation in the cat Constipated refers to the abnormal accumulation of faeces in the colon (large intestine). In affected cats this results in infrequent passage of faeces, often with difficulty or discomfort, and cats will strain to defecate. Causes of constipation The most common reason for a cat to be constipated is dehydration. The colon is the area of the digestive tract where water is reabsorbed from the gut. This means that when a cat is very dehydrated more water is reabsorbed by the body in an attempt to conserve as much water as possible and, as a result, the faeces will become very dry and hard and more difficult to pass. Other reasons for constipation are obstructions in the distal colon, caused by strictures (narrowing the diameter of the colon), foreign bodies or tumours. The pelvic canal can be deformed after a fracture of the hip bone(s), for instance after a road traffic accident, and result in a narrowing of the pelvis canal through which normal faeces cannot pass. If these problems persist for a long time a dilated, inactive colon (megacolon) can be the result. Constipation can also sometimes occur because a cat does not want to defecate (for example some cats can refuse to use the litter tray if the one particular type of cat litter they are used to using is changed).
