Constipation
The lower digestive tract Constipation is passage of small amounts of hard, dry bowel movements, usually fewer than three times a week. People who are constipated may find it difficult and painful to have a bowel movement. Other symptoms of constipation include feeling bloated, uncomfortable, and sluggish. Many people think they are constipated when, in fact, their bowel movements are regular. For example, some people believe they are constipated, or irregular, if they do not have a bowel movement every day. However, there is no right number of daily or weekly bowel movements. Normal may be three times a day or three times a week depending on the person. Also, some people naturally have firmer stools than others. At one time or another, almost everyone gets constipated. Poor diet and lack of exercise are usually the causes. In most cases, constipation is temporary and not serious. Understanding its causes, prevention, and treatment will help most people find relief.

Constipation
Constipation is an acute or chronic condition in which bowel movements occur less often than usual or consist of hard, dry stools that are painful or difficult to pass. (Illustration by Electronic Illustrators Group). Definition
Constipation is an acute or chronic condition in which bowel movements occur less often than usual or consist of hard, dry stools that are painful or difficult to pass. Bowel habits vary, but an adult who has not had a bowel movement in three days or a child who has not had a bowel movement in four days is considered constipated. Description
Constipation is one of the most common medical complaints in the United States. Constipation can occur at any age, and is more common among individuals who resist the urge to move their bowels at their body's signal. This often happens when children start school or enter daycare and feel shy about asking permission to use the bathroom. Constipation is more common in women than in men and is especially apt to occur during pregnancy . Age alone does not increase the frequency of constipation, but elderly people (especially women) are more likely to suffer from constipation.

Chronic Constipation and Encopresis in Children What is constipation? Most of the time, when we say a child is constipated, we mean he or she passes bowel movements less than every other or every third day and when he or she does pass a bowel movement, it often is large and hard, and perhaps most importantly, it hurts. What are normal bowel habits? Everybody is different, so what is normal for one person may not be normal for another person. When we talk about normal bowel habits, we are talking about averages.

Constipation
We all know what it is, but it is hard to define. Bowel movement patters show that 90% of people in Western countries have between three bowel movements a day to three per week. Constipation is often defined as fewer than three bowel movements a week, though symptoms like straining, passing hard stools and inability to defecate when desired, together with abdominal pain also form part of a diagnosis.
The use of laxatives, both prescribed and non-prescribed, is common, and constipation is thought to be common, especially in older people, women, and people with poor diets. So one might think that there would be a wealth of information from clinical trials on the effectiveness of laxative agents - that we would know that they work, and how well they work.
Bandolier thought so too. So it was a surprise to see from a systematic review [1] that we don't have as much information as we thought, or would like.
Review
This is a good review, with great searching (though some might quibble about the exclusion of reports not in English), and an interesting description about a large number of trials which did not pass muster for various reasons. It makes a good read, though the journal is not readily available and

Abdominal massage for chronic constipation
Clinical bottom line: There is insufficient evidence of effect of abdominal massage for chronic constipation. The trials were small and of poor methodological quality. Chronic constipation is common. Observational studies and case reports show that massage may be helpful.
Systematic review:
Date review completed: June 1997
Number of trials included: Four
Number of patients: Total 54 patients
Control groups: phase of no massage or treatment with laxatives.
Main outcomes: total gastrointestinal/colonic transit time, stool frequency, number of days with bowel movements, episodes of faecal incontinence, number of enemas given, stool consistency, patient well-being.
Inclusion criteria were: controlled clinical trial; active treatment phase (abdominal massage) compared with a control phase (no massage or treatment with laxatives); patients with chronic constipation.
Medline, Embase, CISCOM and the Cochrane Library (all years to June 1997) and the reviewer's own database of alternative therapies were searched to identify controlled trials of massage treatment for chronic constipation. A number of relevant search terms were used and experts were contacted for other published/unpublished information. Referenece lists of retrieved reports were checked for additional citations and no language restrictions were made. A controlled trial was defined as having a nonmassage treatment group. Study quality was assessed using a validated scale. Data were extracted in a standardised, predefined manner. A descriptive analysis was conducted.

Stomach pain is a common symptom of constipation. What is constipation?
Although constipation is a common term, from a medical perspective it is hard to define precisely.
But defining infrequent is difficult when some 90 per cent of people in Western countries have a bowel pattern that ranges from three bowel movements a day to three per week.
And it is possible to move your bowels every day and still be constipated if the stools are hard and difficult to pass. Equally, a daily bowel movement is by no means essential for, nor a sign of, good health.
Provided the bowels move regularly and without discomfort, it doesn't matter if your natural bowel frequency is once every two or three days.

What is infant constipation?
Constipation is a condition where stools become firmer and harder. Your child will be troubled or in pain when they need to empty their bowels, and the bowels will not be emptied as often as usual.
What causes it?
    The breastfed baby
A breastfed baby will very rarely get constipation because breast milk is more easily digested.
Breastfed babies have several helpful types of bacteria in their large intestine that are capable of breaking down some of the otherwise indigestible proteins in milk. As a result, their stools are softer, making bowel movements easier.
Breastfed babies also have higher levels of a hormone called motiline that increases the movement of the bowels.

Pregnancy and Constipation
Constipation occurs when there is abdominal pain or discomfort, difficult and infrequent bowel movements, and the passage of hard stools. Unfortunately, constipation affects approximately half of all women at some point during their pregnancy.
What causes constipation during pregnancy?
In general, worry, anxiety, minimal physical exercise, and a low-fiber diet may cause constipation. An increase in the prevalence of constipation in pregnant women is thought to occur due to hormones that relax the intestinal muscle and by pressure caused by the expanding uterus on the intestines. Relaxation of the intestinal muscle causes food and waste to move slower through your system. Sometimes iron tablets may contribute to constipation. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water if you are taking iron supplements. You may need to switch to a different type of iron tablet, but it is important to talk to your doctor first.

Treatment of Constipation at Mayo Clinic
(Synonyms: colonic dysmotility, slow-transit constipation) At Mayo Clinic, a multidisciplinary team of specialists work together to diagnose and treat conditions that cause chronic constipation. Constipation can be due to many disorders. It is important to identify the specific disorder for treatment to be appropriate and effective. In most cases, patients are diagnosed and treatment is begun, including surgery if necessary, in a week. Doctors in the Motility Interest Group , a part of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, are acclaimed for their research and treatment innovations in the area of colonic dysmotility, a severe constipation caused by dysfunctional nerves or muscles.
Diagnosis
Specialists at Mayo Clinic have access to many specialized tests, some pioneered at Mayo, to diagnose the cause of constipation. Frequently used tests include scintigraphy, tests to measure colonic contraction (motility tests) and tests to assess whether the rectum and pelvic floor muscles function appropriately during evacuation (i.e., anorectal testing). Why Am I Constipated?
... Encopresis Treatment Guide While there are some medical causes of constipation, such as Hirschsprung's disease, cystic fibrosis and hypothyroidism, most children who are constipated are normal. Warning signs that may indicate a more serious condition causing your child to be constipated include vomiting, weight loss, poor weight gain, fever, abdominal distention or having a poor appetite. Constipation is usually defined as having infrequent bowel movements that are hard and painful. Infants that strain or groan when they have a bowel movement are not constipated if their stool is soft, even if they only have a bowel movement every two or three days. It is also important to remember that many breastfed infants only have a bowel movement once every week or two.
