PINK-EYE
Pink-eye is the lay term for acute follicular conjunctivitis. This condition occurs in small epidemics and was once known as "dockyard workers conjunctivitis", when it was described amongst workmen during the Second World War. Acute follicular conjunctivitis is commonly caused by an adenovirus. The key finding is that of follicles, small bumps in the reddened conjunctiva, seen when the lower lid is pulled down, and the palpebral conjunctiva examined. Although this condition is bilateral, the follicles and symptoms are often more prominent on one side. Acute follicular conjunctivitis follows the so-called "rule of eights", eight day incubation period, eight days maximum symptoms and eight days to resolution. It takes a full month to go away. The use of topical antibiotics is not indicated if the condition is strictly viral (as indicated by the follicles). Topical antibiotics may often cause a secondary allergic reaction (conjunctivitis medicamentosa) complicating the picture and prolonging the patient's complaints. Presevative free artificial tears (e.g. Refresh) and hot compresses are indicated for symptomatic relief. The presence of copious amounts of pus is more indicative of a bacterial conjunctivitis This may be treated by broad spectrum antibiotics such as Polytrim (polymixin B sulfate and trimethoprim sulfate), gentamicin 0.3%, and tobramycin 0.3%. These will give good coverage of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. The aminoglycosides (gentamicin and tobramycin) have weak activity against Staphylococcal species and there are also resistant strains of Pseudomonas. Fluoroquinolones are also good options.

Toolbox Conjunctivitis is one of the most common and treatable eye conditions in children and adults. Often called "pink eye," it is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid and helps keep the eyelid and eyeball moist. Viruses, bacteria, irritating substances (shampoo, dirt, smoke, pool chlorine), sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or allergens (substances that cause allergies) can all cause conjunctivitis. Pink eye caused by bacteria, viruses or STDs can spread easily from person to person but is not a serious health risk if diagnosed promptly; allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious. It is important to find out whether your pink eye is caused by allergies or infection because each condition has different treatments. This article focuses on allergic conjunctivitis.

Conjunctivitis
Eye Diseases

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, transparent layer that lines the inner eyelid and covers the white part of the eye. The three main types of conjunctivitis are infectious, allergic and chemical. The infectious type, commonly called "pink eye" is caused by a contagious virus or bacteria. Your body's allergies to pollen, cosmetics, animals or fabrics often bring on allergic conjunctivitis. And, irritants like air pollution, noxious fumes and chlorine in swimming pools may produce the chemical form. Common symptoms of conjunctivitis are red watery eyes, inflamed inner eyelids, blurred vision, a scratchy feeling in the eyes and, sometimes, a puslike or watery discharge. Conjunctivitis can sometimes develop into something that can harm vision so you should see your optometrist promptly for diagnosis and treatment.

What Is Conjunctivitis?

Acute conjunctivitis, commonly known as “pink eye”, is an inflammation of the mucous membrane on the inside of the eyelid and upper eyeball. Symptoms include discomfort, discharge, red watery eyes, swelling, itching, blurred vision and light sensitivity.
What Causes Conjunctivitis?
There are 3 main types of conjunctivitis:
  • Infectious – caused by a virus or bacteria. Viral conjunctivitis is usually accompanied by a sore throat and is highly contagious among children, often spread by hand-to-eye contact. Allergic – this form of conjunctivitis is most common in spring and fall, but can occur anytime when and if one is allergic to pets, cosmetics, most dust, or any other allergens. Chemical - causes may include irritants like air pollution, noxious fumes and chlorine in swimming pools. Less frequent causes include irritation from wind, dust, or overexposure to sunlight.

It was among a roll of photos that were forwarded to the federal National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, WI, alerting them to the existence of this new disease perhaps for the first time. Though difficult to tell from this digitized image, there are at least five house finches infected with the disease in this photo. Photo by the Author. HERPES VIRAL CONJUNCTIVITIS
A FELINE PROBLEM
The conjunctival membranes of the eye are basically the “pink part” under the eyelids and the lining of the eyelids themselves. When they are irritated, they redden and can become itchy, dry, and uncomfortable. The cornea, or clear dome-like covering of the eye can become involved in the inflammation. It can become cloudy or even ulcerated. Tear production can be reduced leading to a chronic dry, uncomfortable eye. Conjunctivitis in cats is usually of viral origin and usually that means a Herpesvirus (Feline herpesvirus-1 to be specific). Herpesvirus grow in the tissues of the body that interface with the environment, such as the upper respiratory tissues and conjunctivae. The infection begins with an initial phase which is usually the most severe in terms of symptoms. This phase resolves but the virus itself does not go away; instead, it retreats into the Trigeminal Ganglion (a neurologic structure in the head) where the patient’s immune system holds it prisoner. In times of stress, the immune system is taxed and the virus is able to escape from the ganglion, traveling out via the nerves exiting the ganglion and leading to return of symptoms. BABY KITTENS: A SPECIAL SITUATION Herpes infection is extremely common in young kittens especially those facing other stresses (fleas, poor nutrition, environmental cold etc.). Feral kittens, waifs of the streets, outdoor kittens, shelter kittens etc. are all high risk for Herpes infection. Young kittens can produce so much ocular discharge that their eyes gum closed sealing the infected secretions around the eye. It is important that the eyelids be opened manually to allow drainage of secretions as well as application of medicine. The swelling of the conjunctivae can be so severe that the eye itself is not visible.

Allergic Conjunctivitis Definition Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane lining the anterior sclera and inner eyelid surfaces, seen in the broad spectrum of conditions, including allergy. Allergic inflammation of the ocular surface (the lid margins, conjunctiva and cornea is one of the commonest eye disorders. In its mildest form, the conjunctiva becomes inflamed in response to a transient allergen (e.g. pollen in seasonal allergic conjunctivitis), or A persistent allergen (e.g. house dust mite in perennial allergic conjunctivitis) producing unpleasant symptoms but not threatening sight. At the other end of the spectrum are disorders with blinding complications such as vernal keratoconjunctivitis and Atopic keratoconjunctivitis. Classification of Allergic Conjunctivitis Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis or Hay Fever Perennial allergic conjunctivitis Atopic keratoconjunctivitis Vernal keratoconjunctivitis Giant papillary conjunctivitis Clinical Features of Allergic conjunctivitis History is important Other allergic diseases like asthma or eczema suggest allergic conjunctivitis

The light pink tissue that lies between the eye lid and the eye itself is known as the conjunctiva. Under normal circumstances, this tissue is not visible unless the eye lid is moved out of the way, upward for the upper lids or downward for the lower lids. If the conjunctiva is swollen and visible while looking at the bird in its cage or flight, the condition is referred to as conjunctivitis. The cause of conjunctivitis in cockatiels has created much debate over the last several years. The exact cause of this disease has yet to be determined in all cases. Organisms postulated to be the cause of the disease have included Gram Negative bacteria, Mycoplasma, Chlamydia and viruses. Attempts at isolating mycoplasma or viral agents have been very inconsistent. Chlamydial organisms, the Psittacosis disease agent, have been implicated in a back-handed manner. Many veterinarians have successfully treated this disease by using the drugs to treat Psittacosis. Definitive diagnosis through culture or necropsy has been hit or miss, though. Dr. Louise Bauck addressed this issue at the 1989 Association of Avian Veterinarians Annual Convention. Her attempts at diagnosis were similar in a controlled study of approximately 1,000 cockatiels. Resolution of the conjunctivitis occurs quicker when the birds are treated with tetracycline opthalmic ointment than with other opthalmic ointments. Prevention of a carrier status or full-blown Psittacosis can be attained by treating the affected birds and others in contact with these birds for Psittacosis.

    The eye
    Causes of conjunctivitis
The most common cause of conjunctivitis is an infection of the eye. This can be caused by many types of viruses or bacteria. Allergies are also a common cause of conjunctivitis. Typical allergic reactions include pollen (hay fever), cosmetics or animal fur.
    Infective conjunctivitis
Infective conjunctivitis is more common in children than in adults. Viral conjunctivitis often occurs with mild viral illnesses. It is often caused by a virus called an adenovirus, the same type of virus that causes the common cold. It is sometimes associated with more serious illnesses, such as measles. Bacterial conjunctivitis often follows viral conjunctivitis, or after rubbing the eyes following close contact with someone else with infective conjunctivitis. Common causes of bacterial conjunctivitis include Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Your eyes become red and very itchy, and generally your sight is good. You may notice a runny nose or feel unwell if you have a more severe allergy. The eyes then get better, and the condition then returns every now and again.
If it occurs during the hay fever season, then it is related to hay fever. But if it occurs all the year round you are probably allergic to dust.
