Scott Health Sciences Library, University of Alberta The following explanatory information was provided in Table 1 of this article: "‡exp = explode, a search term that automatically includes closely related indexing terms." Based on my understanding of Ovid and PubMed search mechanisms as well as the information provided in the Ovid On-Screen Help, the above definition of the Explode operation could be misleading. A better definition would be one of the following: "Exp = explode, an operation that causes any conceptually narrower term(s) to be included automatically when a subject heading is searched."

Georgia girl can't feel pain because of CIPA (congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis) helps us realize pain's not all bad
I stumbled across an intriguing story today about five-year-old Ashlyn Blocker , a kindergartener in Patterson, Georgia who can't feel pain.
Her story reads like a superhero tale. She is fearless. Her parents and teachers must check her for scrapes and bruises because she wouldn't know if she had cut herself or broken something and therein lies the danger.
For Ashlyn, it seems there are no injuries. There is only cosmetic damage.
But pain is like a smoke detector, a burglar alarm, an early warning system. Ashlyn's condition reminds us that while we're tempted to go through life avoiding pain, what we really need to avoid is damage. Seeking to avoid pain is like disabling your smoke detector because you're afraid of fire. It makes no sense.
That doesn't mean we should enjoy pain, any more than we should enjoy the annoying chirp of a smoke detector. But it does mean that when we feel pain be it physical or emotional we should recognize it as an important warning that some part of us is being threatened ....

Cerebral-evoked potentials were used to study a 25-year-old man, the older of two siblings with congenital insensitivity to all noxious stimuli, gross impairment of temperature perception, and anhidrosis. Electrical stimulation of tooth pulp consistently eliciting pain and cerebral responses in normal subjects evoked neither cerebral potentials nor painful or other sensations in our patient. However, ordinarily painful electric
