Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic
Children's Hospital of Wisconsin rated #3 in the nation by Child magazine; #5 in cardiac care. Click here for more information. Children's Hospital of Wisconsin , in conjunction with Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin , runs one of the few Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinics in the country to treat the increasing number of people born with heart conditions who are living into adulthood. There are more than 1 million adults with congenital heart disease living in the United States, however, in the last 10 years, only 30 cardiologists nationwide have received specialized training in caring for this unique population. Some heart defects once thought to be "cured" now are being recognized as having long-term effects as these patients live longer. Many adult patients have a false sense of well being, stop seeing their cardiologist, stop taking their medications and do not get adequate follow-up care for their heart problems. Depending on the original defect, some patients can suffer sudden and serious problems. The Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic was developed to address this need with a goal of providing state-of-the-art, comprehensive diagnostic and interventional cardiac care to these patients.

Our long experience with prenatal diagnosis and planning for optimum care allows us to offer the highest quality treatment whether intervention is indicated before or after birth. Under the direction of Dr. Michael Harrison, the Fetal Treatment Center was the first institution to develop fetal surgery techniques. The first open fetal surgery in the world was performed at UCSF over 2 decades ago. We presently have more experience with fetal surgery and endoscopic fetal intervention than any other institution in the world. We are dedicated to congenital heart disease research and treatment innovation.

Morbidity from congenital heart disease Medical complications associated with congenital heart disease There are a number of medical complications associated with congenital heart disease. These include skeletal deformities, joint and bone problems, renal (kidney) dysfunction, blood cell disorders and bleeding tendencies, gallstones and acne. The risk of developing these complications depends on the type and severity of congenital heart abnormality present at birth. Where cyanosis (a chronic shortage of oxygen in the blood) is present, these complications are much more likely to develop. Most babies, children and adults with congenital heart disease have a life-long risk of infective endocarditis: an infection usually affecting a heart valve or a blood vessel. While infective endocarditis is rare in the general population, people with a heart defect are at a greater risk of developing it, and need to take preventive measures such as taking antibiotics prior to dental treatment, childbirth, body piercing, and surgery. Infective endocarditis accounts for around 4% of admissions to a specialised unit for grown-up congenital heart disease patients in the UK ( Li W and Somerville J (1998) Infective endocarditis in the grown-up congenital heart (GUCH) population. European Heart Journal;19:166-73

It can be a frightening experience to learn that your child has a congenital heart defect (one that's present at birth). But most people don't know that congenital heart disease is a relatively common condition that affects almost one in every 100 newborns in the United States. It may be comforting to learn that medical knowledge, technology, and experience can offer accurate diagnosis and treatments that allow nearly every form of congenital heart disease to be treated. Most defects today are treated with surgery, catheter procedures, and sometimes medication. Thanks to advances in techniques, surgical and heart catheterization procedures can offer treatments for congenital heart defects that once could not be treated effectively. Cardiac surgery and cardiac catheterizations are now being performed on younger children - in fact, it's common for these procedures to be performed during infancy or even the newborn period. This has resulted in many long-term advantages for these children. Although nothing can be guaranteed with 100% certainty, the majority of children with heart problems can enjoy happy and healthy futures.

A Public Health Perspective
Public Health
The objective of all public health activities is to lessen the occurrence of disease and to diminish the burden of disease on patients, their families and their communities. Congenital Heart Disease (CHD)
CHD is a birth defect that affects the development of the heart and the major arteries and veins. The care and treatment of infants with these abnormalities uses extensive and expensive health care resources and severe abnormalities still represent a major cause of infant mortality in developed countries. Social and Personal Concerns Emerge with Medical Advances
Technologic advances over the past few decades have greatly improved the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular abnormalities, but there has not as yet been adequate emphasis on the many personal and social difficulties encountered by patients and their families.
The Vision
Congenital heart disease should become a worthy focus of professional and public attention to all measures that could reduce its occurrence and prevent its many lifetime adversities.

GeneDis Website for Congenital Heart Disease Congenital Heart Disease is a human genetic disease caused due to mutations in the CSX gene. The GeneDis web site for Congenital Heart Disease includes the wild type primary sequences of the CSX gene and protein. Known mutations are incorporated in the gene and in the protein sequences using hyperlinks. Users can compare CSX DNA or protein sequences to the wild type hyperlinked sequences present in GeneDis. The pairwise alignment output retains the hyperlinks, which enable the user to browse through the Congenital Heart Disease mutation table. The mutation table shows the location of the mutation on the cDNA, genomic DNA and protein sequences, the number of exon or intron, the severity of the disease associated with the mutation and a reference in which the mutation was first described. Go to "Search the Congenital Heart Disease Database with your primary DNA or protein sequence" Go to "GeneDis Homepage"
Disease description Cardiac septation is a critical morphogenetic process in which the primordial single atrium and ventricle are partitioned into four chambers. Mistakes in this process occur commonly in humans; 1 in 1500 live births have an atrial septal defect (ASD) (

Heart Child
by Natasha Fouracre The words 'complex congenital heart disease' are enough to scare any parents into a state of shock. But for a family living far from the city, regular travel for treatment becomes costly and exhausting as well as emotionally draining. Natasha Fouracre, from the New England region of New South Wales, tells her son Jai's story.
Published 10/04/2003 It all started on 14 March 1996, when I was two weeks overdue and feeling very excited and yet very anxious about the birth ahead. I visited my local GP and he suggested I go to the local hospital at Gunnedah for my membranes to be ruptured. Labour progressed normally, and after six long hours I delivered a beautiful baby boy, Jai Richard Nelson. Two days later the world around me came crashing down, and the biggest emotional and financial rollercoaster ride began.
