    Compulsive gambling a genetic disorder?
    September 5, 1996
Wed posted at: 4:35 a.m. EDT From Correspondent Lisa Price CHICAGO (CNN) A widely held theory that people may actually become addicted to gambling may now be more than speculation. New scientific research released Tuesday at a meeting in Chicago reveals that compulsive gambling may in fact be genetically founded. "Prior to today, we just go in and explain the signs, the symptoms, the progression," said Christopher Anderson of the Illinois Council on Problem and Compulsive Gambling. "This just underscores what we've been saying with sound, scientific, tangible evidence. In other words here's a snapshot of this illness." The research suggests compulsive gamblers share a gene that predisposes them to addictive behavior. "Environmental factors are important, psychological factors are important. It's a complex disorder. But genes also play a role and this is one of the genes," said Dr. David Comings of the City of Hope National Medical Center. The gene is called the D-2 receptor. In some people, it can be stimulated by alcohol, drugs, sex, food or lots of gambling.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE The prevalence of problem gambling may be as high as 1% to 3% of the adult population ... approximately 2 to 8 million people in the United States alone!! Problem gambling affects the family as a whole, as well as each and every member. It disrupts family life through its negative financial consequences, the deterioration of basic trust between the gambler and other family members, and the loss of the problem gambler's ability to carry out his or her normal family roles and responsibilities. These developments in turn produce social, emotional, and even physical changes in the family's well-being. In adjusting to the impact of gambling addiction, family members may become increasingly isolated from each other and from their community. Family members often need help to recover from the impact of the problem gambler's behaviors as well as support in building a family environment that supports recovery for all family members.
For every person with a gambling problem, an average of 10 people are adversely affected by the gambler's behavior. WARNING SIGNS

Alcohol, drugs or a mental disability feature prominently. The National Gambling Effects Study Commission in 1999 stated that the overwhelming majority of Americans are able to gamble without any problem at all. After all, 80-85% of the US population gamble in a given year. There is concern over the attention that State governments pay to compulsive gambling and compulsive gamblers. Many remark that the state of Nevada (home to Vegas) and others spend little to no money dealing with the problem of compulsive gambling in their territories. After all, millions are spent on compulsive drug addiction and drugs are not even legal. Religious, social and anti-gambling organisations fear that too much money is spent on advertising and the accessibility of lottery machines in neighbourhood stores and not enough on curbing the problems that compulsive gambling Caution should be taken however when comparing compulsive gambling to the addiction to drugs and alcohol. The difference is that there is no ingestion. It is a compulsive behavioural disorder with relatively little known about the disease or its remedies. It is this nature of behavioural influence that has led many to question whether compulsive gambling is in fact a disease or irresponsibility. Compulsive gambling
Definition: Compulsive gambling is the inability to resist impulses to gamble, leading to severe personal or social consequences.
Alternative Names: Gambling - compulsive; Pathological gambling; Addictive gambling
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Pathological gambling affects 1-3% of adults, men more often than women. It usually begins in adolescence in men and later in women. This behavior usually progresses from occasional gambling to habitual gambling. The urge to gamble becomes so great that the tension can only be relieved by more gambling. Higher stakes and personal risks become involved, as well as neglect of other interests, family, and work. Severe family problems, financial ruin, and criminal behavior to support the gambling habit may result. The cause for this behavior is not known. One risk factor may be excessive alcohol use which lowers inhibitions and impairs judgment.

    Compulsive gambling
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Compulsive gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. A preferred term among many professionals is problem gambling, as few people described by the term experience true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word. Problem gambling often is defined by whether harm is experienced by the gambler or others rather than by the gambler's behavior. Severe problem gambling may be diagnosed as clinical pathological gambling if the gambler meets certain criteria.

Extreme cases of problem gambling may cross over into the realm of mental disorders. Pathological gambling was recognized as a psychiatric disorder in the DSM-III, but the criteria were significantly reworked based on large-scale studies and statistical methods for the DSM-IV . Pathological gambling is now defined as persistent and recurrent maladaptive gambling behavior meeting at least five of the following criteria, as long as these behaviors are not better explained by a

If you have a gambling problem, call the Gambling State Hotline or Gamblers Anonymous Hotline and enlist the support of others who have the same problem. This is paramount. Many compulsive gamblers go through terrifying experiences before they are ready for help. The compulsive gambler needs to be willing to accept the fact that he has lost control over gambling and has a sincere desire to get well. Be honest with family members. Tell them the truth because secrets will eventually come out. Enlist the support of family, friends and religious groups. Also, stop gambling; recovery from this illness is impossible if you are actively engaged in gambling. Treatment Options
Initial treatment necessitates the involvement of people with expertise in the treatment of compulsive gambling. Most counselors in this area will certainly recommend involvement with Gamblers Anonymous. Your doctor will assess the nature of your gambling problem as well as other potential related psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse or other addictive disorders, and/or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, which may impact your efforts at recovery. He may prescribe medications to treat these disorders in addition to addressing your gambling problem.

Although gambling does not produce the cognitive or physical impairment associated with alcohol or drug abuse, an obsession with gambling can be just as devastating. Compulsive gambling can destroy social, personal and occupational or educational performance. Compulsive gambling is considered a form of addiction. The term addiction is usually reserved to explain a compulsive attraction or pathological attachment to a substance, normally a drug. However, we now recognize that some behaviors can be addicting, such as eating, sex and gambling. All addiction is characterized by loss of control, preoccupation, compulsivity, narrowing of interests, dishonesty, guilt and chronic relapse. Addictions to behavioral processes are called process addictions. The process of engaging in these behaviors leads to typical addiction symptoms (withdrawal, tolerance, heightened excitement or euphoria). Process addictions are more common among children of alcoholics or addicts, recovering alcoholics or addicts, or current alcoholics or addicts. Like other addictions, in many cases there are no correlations with high risk situations or history it just happens.

The individual who is experiencing a slow but steady loss of control over gambling behavior is facing a problem that can ruin the lives of up to ten or twelve other people, including his/her own, family's, friends', and work associates. Relationships deteriorate as the gambling results in serious neglect of other areas of life. The urge to gamble becomes more frequent, more insistent. Jobs and the welfare of the family become jeopardized as the gambler becomes caught in a web of obsession that leaves room for little else. The gambling behavior progresses until the gambler is alienated from others, depressed, possibly unemployed, even suicidal. At this point, the gambler may realize that his/her life is falling apart. He or she may desperately wish to change but fears that he/she cannot. Perhaps he/she has tried to quit many times before, but found the desire for "action" to be overwhelming. The gambler, who can be male or female, of any age, race or religion, has tried to use "will power" to stay away from those horse races, casinos, lotteries, bingo, dice, sports events, the stock market or any other gambling situation. His/her previous failures to do so cause despair. This is called "hitting bottom", and it is at this point that the gambler becomes willing to turn to outside help ...
