A speech-language pathologist is trained to diagnose and treat communication disorders such as those involving deficits in comprehension or generation of language, speech or voice production, resonance, or speech fluency. Speech-language pathologists are also trained to diagnose and treat swallowing disorders. A master's degree is required as the professional entry-level degree for speech-language pathology. An audiologist is trained to diagnose and manage disorders of hearing and auditory processing, to provide couseling and habilitation methods, and to apply a variety of technologies such as hearing aids and assistive listening devices to enhance hearing and auditory processing in persons diagnosed with impairment. A doctoral degree will be required by 2007 as the professional entry-level degree for audiology. Educational requirements of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) specify that students receive a broad-based educational training involving both classroom instruction and clinical practicum. At UConn, clinical experience in speech language pathology and audiology are offered in the department's speech and hearing clinic as well as at many external sites. Sites within the UConn area include acute and rehabilitation hospitals, schools, out-patient centers, nursing homes, extended-care facilities, clinics, and private practive settings.

What Is Meant By "Communication Disorders"?
The term COMMUNICATION DISORDERS encompasses a wide variety of problems in language, speech, and hearing. Speech and language impairments include articulation problems, voice disorders, fluency problems (such as stuttering), aphasia (difficulty in using words, usually as a result of a brain injury), and delays in speech and/or language. Speech and language delays may be due to many factors, including environmental factors or hearing loss. Hearing impairments include partial hearing and deafness. Deafness may be defined as a loss sufficient to make auditory communication difficult or impossible without amplification. There are four types of hearing loss. Conductive hearing losses are caused by diseases or obstructions in the outer or middle ear and can usually be helped with a hearing aid. Sensorineural losses result from damage to the sensory hair cells of the inner ear or the nerves that supply it and may not respond to the use of a hearing aid. Mixed hearing losses are those in which the problem occurs both in the outer or middle ear and in the inner ear. A central hearing loss results from damage to the nerves or brain.

Institutional: US$284/£171
Individual: US$139/£85 Aims and Scope: In recent times there has been a marked increase in the emphasis on multilingual and multicultural concerns in Speech-Language Pathology, perhaps especially in the United States where it has been strongly promoted by ASHA, the professional body. While anglophone areas and those of the major European languages (such as Scandinavia, Germany, France and Italy) have long had a strong tradition of work and publications in the area, new work has been forthcoming on, among others, the Cantonese and Putonghua varieties of Chinese, Thai, Turkish, Brazilian Portuguese, new and old world Spanish, and with certain minority languages (for example, Welsh and Irish). We see the area of research to be covered by this journal as three-fold. First, there is research into multilingualism (including multidialectalism) and communication disorders. This would encompass research into how communication disorders are manifested in multilingual individuals (for example differential language disturbances in aphasia, patterns of interference in delayed phonology); how treatment is best undertaken for multilingual clients (for example, choice of language to treat in, use of translators); and provision of multilingual assessments materials (e.g. translation of standard tests, development of assessment materials for specific language groups, development of specifically bilingual assessment procedures).

For example, speech and language disorders include stuttering, aphasia, dysfluency, voice disorders (hoarseness, breathiness, or sudden breaks in loudness or pitch), cleft lip and/or palate, articulation problems, delays in speech and language, autism, and phonological disorders. Speech and language impairments and disorders can be attributed to environmental factors, of which the most commonly known are High Risk Register problems, which include drugs taken during pregnancy, common STD's such as syphilis, and birthing trauma to name a few. Communication disorders can also stem from other conditions such as learning disabilities, dyslexia , cerebral palsy, and mental retardation. Communication disorders can also stem from other conditions such as learning disabilities, dyslexia, cerebral palsy, and mental retardation. Individuals with communication disorders have considerable difficulty making themselves clearly understood and may also have difficulty composing their thoughts and ideas or in understanding what is said by others. These difficulties are generally due to neurological or mechanical disabilities involving the voice. A child with a communication disorder may also present such characteristics as the inability to follow instructions or slow incomprehensive speech. Please note that those communication disabilities due to hearing or vision impairments are covered in the hearing or vision impairment sections of this document.
