Common cold
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
For the Codename: Kids Next Door character with this name, see Common Cold
The common cold is a mild viral infectious disease of the nose and throat ; the upper respiratory system . Its symptoms are sneezing , sniffling, running/blocked nose (often these occur simultaneously, or one in each nostril), scratchy, sore, or phlegmy throat, coughing headache , and a general feeling of illness; they last between 3 to 10 days, with residual coughing lasting up to 3 weeks. It is the most common of all diseases , infecting subjects at an average rate of slightly over one infection per year per person. Infection rates greater than three infections per year per person are not uncommon in some populations. Children and their caretakers are at a higher risk, probably due to the high population density of schools and the fact that transmission to family members or caretakers is highly efficient. The common cold belongs to the upper respiratory tract infections . It is different from influenza , a more severe viral infection of the respiratory tract that shows the additional symptoms of rapidly rising fever chills , and body and muscle aches Antibiotics CANNOT treat common cold.

If you have a cold, should you: Take a vitamin pill? Take a laxative? Take a drink? Take a rest? What causes a cold? Many different viruses can cause a cold. Over a hundred have been identified so far. A virus is a disease-producing agent so small that it goes right through the very fine filter that stops bacteria. These cold-causing viruses are present in great numbers in your nose and throat when you have a cold. They are carried on the droplets you expel when talking, coughing, or sneezing. How do you catch a cold? Though a virus causes your cold, a number of conditions seem to increase your susceptibility. People appear to catch colds mainly indoors. Certainly they get more of them during the colder months. This is probably because of more indoor living in proximity to other people’s cold viruses, with closed windows and a lack of circulating air allowing the viruses to remain alive and on hand. On the Appollo 7 space flight, you may remember, first the captain and then, within a few days, the crew came down with colds. Fatigue, poor physical condition, some air pollutants, and – perhaps – chilling seem to give the virus

What you know can keep your family healthy The saying, "Knowledge is Power," couldn't be truer when it comes to helping protect your family from influenza. The more you know about the flu, the more prepared you can be to help prevent it. Choose from the links below to learn more about the flu, including how the flu is spread and who is at risk. What is the flu? How is the flu spread? Who is at risk of exposure to the flu? What is the flu? How is the flu spread? When an infected person sneezes, coughs, or even speaks, he or she expels microscopic droplets that can contain the influenza virus, which can infect others if inhaled. Therefore, one infected person can quickly turn crowded or enclosed spaces such as schools, homes, and offices into likely locations for catching the flu. Once the influenza virus enters the nose, it invades the lining of the throat, nasal passages, and sometimes the lungs and can quickly cause an infection. The virus then infects healthy cells and rapidly produces thousands of copies of the influenza virus, which can then infect other cells throughout the respiratory tract. Norwalk Viruses Widespread
All of us know someone who has been ill with a “stomach bug” this season. Many of these are undefined viral or bacterial illnesses that typically cause some discomfort for a few days and then disappear as mysteriously as they showed up. But there’s a good chance that the culprit may have been either the Norwalk virus or one of its many relatives. Norwalk virus caused an outbreak of illnesses in Norwalk, Ohio in the 1970’s, and each subsequent related outbreak has been termed “Norwalk-like.” The viruses are second only to the common cold in the occurrence of viral illnesses in the US. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that an estimated 181,000 cases of Norwalk or Norwalk-like infection occur annually in the United States. The high incidence was brought to light last year when hundreds of cruise ship passengers became ill during their trips. The outbreaks, which took place on ships from several different companies, were all determined to be associated with Norwalk-like viruses.

Red wine is said to be good for the heart
Another health benefit has been attributed to red wine - fighting off the common cold. According to scientists in Spain, drinking wine, especially red, stops people from developing colds. Something in wine seems to have a protective effect because the same was not seen with beer and spirits. The evidence comes from a year long study of 4,000 volunteers. Experts at five universities found that people who drank more than two glasses of red wine a day had 44% fewer colds than teetotallers. Drinking one glass of red wine a day also protected against colds, but to a lesser extent. Lifestyle factors Red wine has been associated with a number of health benefits, including a lower rate of heart disease. An ingredient in red wine may also prevent herpes, according to a recent study. The ability of red wine to ward off colds may be due to its antioxidant properties, according to Professor Ron Eccles, director of the Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University.

Common symptoms include throat discomfort , followed by sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, coughing and decreased energy level. Fever is uncommon with colds, except in young children.

10. Stress Reduction. Strong links have been drawn between stress and immune system functioning. The more stressed you are, the weaker your immune system will be and the more likely you are to develop symptoms. 9. Make sure your environment is not too dry. Keep the air moist enough so that your nasal passages do not dry out. Consider using a humidifier. 8. Be careful with items such as money, pens, and keypads in public places. They are all potential sources of infection. 7. Take precaution when flying on commercial airlines. The recirculation systems aboard planes has been implicated in the spread of airborne infectious diseases
