It causes oral herpes (cold sores or fever blisters), and genital herpes (genital sores or sores below the waist). There are two herpes simplex viruses: HSV-1 HSV-2 These viruses look identical under the microscope, and either type can infect the mouth or genitals. Most commonly, however, HSV-1 occurs above the waist, and HSV-2 below The body's natural defense system is called the "Immune Responses ". Whenever herpes attacks the immune system, the body fights back against this menace. As the battle grows more intense, there are heavy losses by both the herpes virus and the immune system.

Instructions: Hello,
My name is Kenneth Kimbrell, and I have been suffering from the HSV1 (cold sore) virus since I was about four, I am now 20. They always
seem to show up at your biggest debuts, probably caused by the stress. They are quite common in my family so I assume it was spread to me
through them. Cold Sores are the worst experience any man or woman at any age could possibly deal with. It affects your self image, which is important to all of us, and destroys your confidence to an absolute zero. I always tell myself that there are people with worse problems, this is true. However this is not just my problem and I am not the only one who suffers from these outrageously embarrassing and unsightly sores. For the longest I just used over the counter medicine, such as abreva, herpicin-L, etc. Then eventually it seemed as if my sores would become immune to the affects of the medicine which gradually decreased. So I set out on the internet (of course) to look and see what medicines were out there. To my surprise I found this website which has changed my life forever, and I am sure others around the world like me. I was surprised to notice that this was not a website to sell you fake herbal medicine

A couple of days before the big event, you feel that tale-tell tingling on your lip, and you know you're going to have a cold sore, just in time for photos. Cold soresannoying and unattractive blistersappear next to or on your lip, and seem to come at the most inopportune times. "Cold sores are caused by a common virus passed from person to person through touch or close contact. The virus is called herpes simplex type 1, HSV-1," says Dr. Patricia Winokur, assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Iowa College of Medicine and staff physician at UI Hospitals and Clinics. There are two types of herpes simplex virusesHSV-1 and herpes simplex type 2, HSV-2. HSV-1 most commonly causes the sores on your mouth, Winokur explains. HSV-2 is usually sexually transmitted and often causes sores on the genitals. Since the herpes virus is transmitted by touch, you can get the virus by touching someone else's cold sore and then touching your own mouth, Winokur says. "If you have a cold sore, and you kiss someone, you can pass the virus to the person you kiss."

Cold sores
Dr Rob Hicks When you're run-down and exhausted do you tend to get a cold sore at the side of your mouth? You're not alone: millions of people suffer from this form of the herpes virus.
In this article
Causes Prevention Treatment
Causes
Cold sores are caused by a member of the herpes virus family, herpes simplex virus type one. They occur on the lip, or just above or below it, and are caught through close contact (for example, kissing) with someone who has a cold sore. You can't catch cold sores from cups, flannels or towels.
Common cold sore triggers
  • illness (eg, colds and flu) menstrual periods emotional upset fatigue bright sunlight cold winds
Infection usually occurs in childhood when someone's kissed by a family member who has a cold sore. The virus passes through the skin, travels up a nerve and hides in the nerve root until it's activated. When the virus is activated, it travels back to the skin, causing a tingling sensation. When the sore appears, it's itchy, painful and embarrassing because it's so noticeable.

Dr Trisha Macnair Cold sores may be unsightly, but they're common among young children. We look at the causes and the best ways to prevent recurrent outbreaks.
In this article
What are they? What causes them? Who's affected? Symptoms ... Further help
What are they?
Cold sores are recurrent blistering spots that appear around the mouth and nose.
What causes them?
The virus is picked up through contact with someone who has active infection Cold sores are caused by an infection with the herpes simplex virus. The virus is picked up through contact with someone who has active infection (for example, from someone who has a cold sore) - the virus is passed on in saliva. After an incubation period of three to five days, the initial infection (sometimes called the primary infection) may cause a variety of problems, although in the majority of cases there are no symptoms and it goes unnoticed. The virus isn't cleared from the body but lies dormant (inactive) deep in the nerve cells. Certain triggers can reactivate the virus, causing it to travel down the nerve to the skin surface where it produces a cold sore. Triggers include illness, stress, UV light (exposure to bright sunshine) and cold.

In your response to Oral sex with canker sores , you replied that it was safe and could not cause an infection of the genital region. My girlfriend had what we thought was a canker sore, and I happened to become infected with what we have assumed to this point is herpes. Would a cold sore cause this or did we just win the lottery with a canker sore? Sincerely,
ignorant Dear ignorant, First, if you have not already done so, see a health care provider as soon as possible, as diagnosis of genital herpes is easier when clinical symptoms (lesions) are present. This is important because you need to be certain about your genital herpes status so that you can receive appropriate education and treatment, and also get referrals to other health professionals if needed. In addition, if you are diagnosed with genital herpes or another sexually transmitted infection (STI), and if you and your girlfriend have had any unprotected sexual activity involving skin-to-skin contact and/or an exchange of bodily fluids since having had oral sex, she needs to visit a health care provider for an examination, as well. In a nutshell, canker sores are painful ulcers, or open sores, on the inner membranes of the mouth and cheek that can resemble pimples on the tongue. Canker sores are not considered to be contagious and are of uncertain origin.

I know that they can be caused by both physical illness and mental stress. Is there any way to reduce the frequency with which I get them, i.e., diet? Please help me, I feel like a leper. Yours truly,
Jen
Dear Jen, Most cold sores are a result of the herpes simplex virus that some people harbor, which crops up as an outbreak or "episode" from time to time, usually from stress and many times from too much sun. The healthier we keep ourselves, including staying generally healthy, eating well, getting enough sleep, and managing the stress in life, the stronger our immune systems, and the less likely we are to have a herpes episode. Some people find that keeping their lips moisturized in the winter, covered with sunscreen in the summer, and protected from the wind, seems to decrease the number of outbreaks. Seeing a nutritionist is a way to make sure you are eating a well-balanced diet. Healthy food may strengthen the immune system creating a positive result. When you say you get cold sores all the time, Alice is unclear about the frequency and the severity of your episodes. Have you been to a doctor about them? What assistance have you gotten so far?

A Word About Cold Sores
It's important to understand that genital herpes is related to another common condition: cold sores. They are both caused by a herpes virus, and the HSV-1 that usually causes cold sores is a growing cause of genital herpes. In addition, many people with genital herpes also suffer from cold sores, so take a moment to find out how to treat them.
Treating Cold Sores With VALTREX
If you suffer from cold sores, you may find that you "just deal" with it whenever you have a cold sore outbreak. Maybe you avoid social situations during an outbreak, or try to cover up your cold sores with make-up. But have you considered talking to your doctor or healthcare provider about cold sores? Since cold sores are a medical condition just like genital herpes, your doctor can help. He or she can write a prescription for VALTREX, which attacks the cold sore virus from within.
VALTREX is the first and only oral one-day treatment for cold sores.
