The main symptom is clusters of infected blisters which most commonly form around the mouth or nose, or on the vulva, vagina and cervix in women and on the penis in men, although other areas of the body can be affected. The herpes simplex virus can be passed on from person to person through physical contact with the blisters. Once there, the virus remains in the nervous system but does not develop into blisters unless you are ill, undernourished, under stress or suffer extremes of temperature. Localised stress such as sunburn or friction can also trigger an outbreak.

How can you tell which mouth sores are cold sores?
Cold sores fever blisters are typically differentiated from other sores by observing their appearance and location.
Where do cold sores usually form?
Cold sores are usually found either:
  • On or at the edge of a person's lip.
  • On the facial skin near a person's mouth.
With each new breakout cold sores typically form in essentially the same location as they have before.
What do cold sores look like?
Cold sores usually run their course in 8 to 12 days and take the following forms during the five stages outlined below:
Usually a person's first indication that a cold sore is developing is that they notice a sense of soreness, tautness, or swelling in the location where their cold sore will ultimately form. Sometimes this same area will become slightly reddened.
Day 2-3 : The Blister stage.
The first readily visible sign of cold sore formation is an outbreak of fluid filled blisters. Usually these blisters are very small in size (smaller in diameter than the thickness of a dime) and they usually form in a cluster that is no larger than about the size of a nickel. Sometimes individual blisters coalesce with others so to form a single larger blister.
Cold sore blisters usually rupture shortly after they have formed, leaving a shallow reddish ulceration whose surface becomes gray. This phase of cold sore's formation can be its most

Herpes simplex is a viral infection that attacks the skin and nervous system, and usually produces small, irritating and sometimes painful fluid-filled blisters on or around the mouth and nose. WHAT CAUSES IT? Herpes simplex is caused by a virus, herpes simplex 1 (HSV 1). After the initial outbreak, the virus usually lies dormant in the skin or in nerve tissue until something triggers another eruption. Often the trigger is unknown, but in some people overexposure to sunlight, fever, physical or emotional stress, hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menstruation, or certain foods and drugs seem to reactivate the virus. WHAT ARE ITS COMMON SYMPTOMS?
The first symptoms of a herpes simplex infection usually include burning, tingling or itching sensations around the edges of the lips or nose; this is referred to as a prodromal stage. Within a few hours, small-reddened areas develop followed by the formation of small blisters filled with fluid. Several small blisters may merge to form a larger one. As the blisters enlarge, they rupture and leak sticky serum-like fluid, which rapidly crusts. In uncomplicated cases, the herpes attack usually runs its course in three weeks or less, and seldom leaves a scar. Between cold sore eruptions, the herpes simplex 1 virus lies dormant, presumably in the skin or in nearby nerve tissue.

15. Herpes Simplex Cold Sores
Herpes simplex is commonly referred to as cold sores or fever blisters. It is aviral infection of the skin that may occur once or return again and again.
http://www.skinsite.com/info_herpes_simplex.htm
Herpes Simplex I. Definition: Herpes simplex begins as a group of small red bumps that blister. Sometimes this is preceded by itching and burning of the area. The blisters begin to dry up after a few days and form a yellow crust. The crust then falls off and the redness slowly goes away. The whole process takes about 10-14 days. Scars rarely form. Some people experience just some itching or burning in the area while most people have no symptoms at all. II. Causes:
  • There are two kinds of herpes virus, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 virus causes 60% of the cold sores so common on the lips and face. The other 40% of cases are caused by type 2. On the genitalia these percentages are reversed, that is 40% of genital herpes cases are caused by type 1 and 60% of cases are caused by type 2. Herpes simplex is transmitted by sexual contact, kissing, or other close contact. Family members should not share towels or linen with someone who has an outbreak of herpes on the genitalia or cold sores. Herpes can spread from person to person even when an infected individual has no outbreak or symptoms. Once you have herpes simplex type 1, you cannot be reinfected with the type 1 virus. You can however be infected with the type 2 virus.

What are cold sores?
Cold sores are a very common illness caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
The disorder is characterised by groups of fluid-filled blisters which appear on red swollen areas of the skin or on the mucous membranes. The areas can be tender and painful. The blisters heal without scarring but have a tendency to recur.
  • There are two types of herpes simplex virus
HSV-1, which is the most common type, usually causes cold sores (oral herpes). HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes. But both types can infect any area of the skin or mucous membranes.
Approximately 80 per cent of the adult population have antibodies against HSV-1 in their blood.
