This page is designed to provide information on the research study conducted by Dr. Jacqueline T. Hecht and her associates, and to provide a way for families who are affected by clubfoot to participate in the study. The clubfoot study began in 1997 in order to understand the cause or causes of isolated clubfoot. Isolated clubfoot occurs in one out of every 1,000 newborns. Babies require immediate medical care to obtain good foot correction. Evan after casting and surgery many individuals have smaller feet and legs as a result of clubfoot. Clubfoot occurs twice as frequent in males and can occur in one foot or both feet. We are particularly interested in families where clubfoot has occurred in more than one individual. Studies suggest that both genetic factors (heredity) and environmental factors play important roles. This study is focusing on genetic and environmental factors that cause clubfoot. This may allow us to modify the environment and develop new treatments. Please continue to our page with Frequently Asked Questions for information on how to participate.

Reduce Chances of Baby Having Clubfoot
Smoking During Pregnancy Increases Risk as Well Although women who undergo amniocentesis in pregnancy have a slightly increased risk of having an infant with clubfoot, new study findings suggest that having the test just a few days later in pregnancy can reduce this risk. Dr. G. Yoon and colleagues at the University of Calgary looked at 4,464 amniocentesis procedures performed between 11 and 19 weeks of pregnancy over a 4-year period.
  • When the amniocentesis was performed between week 11 to just before 13 weeks, 1.1% of children were born with the foot abnormality. When the test was done during week 13 but before week 15, only 0.4% of children were born with the abnormality.

Alternate Names : Talipes, Talipes Equinovarus Clubfoot Treatment A clubfoot can be treated by manipulating the foot into a correct position, and casting the foot to maintain the position. This is often done by an orthopedic specialist. The procedure should be started as early as possible ideally, just after birth when the foot is easiest to reshape. Repositioning and recasting occurs every few weeks to improve the position of the foot. After the shape of the foot is realigned, it is maintained through exercise
