According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, "Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), also called chronic obstructive lung disease, is a term that is used for two closely related diseases of the respiratory system: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. In many patients these diseases occur together, although there may be more symptoms of one than the other." Here are some valuable resources on COPD.

  • Definition . A generalized increased resistance to airflow during expiration that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, chronic asthma, and bronchiolitis. Patients rarely have pure emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Most patients will have both processes present. COPD occurs in 10% to 15% of cigarette smokers.
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • Characterized by chronic cough productive of mucus for at least 3 months in each of last 2 years with inflammatory changes in the bronchial mucosa. Results from prolonged exposure to pulmonary irritants including cigarettes, allergens, pollution, and recurrent infections. Emphysema
  • Characterized by destruction of the lung parenchyma beyond the terminal bronchioles with coalescence of alveoli. Divided into:
  • Panlobular , which is the result of alpha1-antitrypsinase deficiency.

    Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is a common and important health problem among seniors in Canada. The number of individuals with COPD will likely increase in the future because of the aging population. While cigarette smoking is the principal cause of COPD, workplace exposures and outdoor air pollution contribute to the development or the exacerbation of COPD. Exposure of the fetus and young child to environmental tobacco smoke and repeated respiratory infections contributes to a decrease in lung function that can contribute to COPD in later life. As their disease progresses, individuals with COPD experience a reduced quality of life due to limited activity levels caused by an increase in shortness of breath. Their families face not only the challenge of providing an increasing level of care, but also the difficulty of watching the relentless progression of the disease in their loved one. The costs associated with COPD affect the family, the health care system, and the community as a whole with loss in productivity and the need for additional services. The greatest gains in terms of the prevention of COPD lie in smoking prevention and cessation, and environmental control to reduce secondary exposure to tobacco smoke, as well as a reduction in outdoor air pollution. The management of COPD must include:

    Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Peter Gzowski "I have what the health care system, bless its heart, calls COPD, for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, but which everyone knows really means emphysema, just as acne really means boils and pimples." - Peter Gzowski, "How to Quit Smoking in Fifty Years or Less," in Addicted: Notes from the Belly of the Beast COPD is an often-fatal lung disease and a leading cause of death and hospitalization in Canada. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a progressive and irreversible blocking of the airway, which is usually caused by emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema occurs when the tiny air sacs in the lungs weaken and break, stiffening the lung tissue and causing the airways to collapse.

    Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death behind cardiovascular disease, cancers and stroke, claims the lives of 120,000 Americans annually and more than 2,500 lives in Washington state during 2002.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a term referring to a large group of lung diseases characterized by obstruction to airflow that interferes with normal breathing. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the most important conditions that compose COPD and they frequently co-exist, hence physicians prefer the term COPD. It does not include other obstructive diseases such as asthma. COPD cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. Early diagnosis and treatment can slow its progression and greatly enhance a patient's health and quality of life. An untreated person suffering from COPD weakens as the disease develops. People with COPD may eventually require supplemental oxygen and/or machines to assist with breathing. In later stages of the disease, heart failure and/or death can occur.
