Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
a.k.a. Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COLD)
Revising Author: Zab Mohsenifar, M.D.
Revising Editor: William C. Shiel, Jr., MD, FACP, FACR What is COPD?
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is comprised primarily of two related diseases - chronic bronchitis and emphysema . In both diseases, there is chronic obstruction of the flow of air through the airways and out of the lungs, and the obstruction generally is permanent and progressive over time. Asthma also is a pulmonary disease in which there is obstruction to the flow of air out of the lungs, but unlike chronic bronchitis and emphysema, the obstruction in asthma usually is reversible. Between "attacks" of asthma the flow of air through the airways usually is good. There are exceptions, however. In some patients with COPD the obstruction can be partially reversed by medications that enlarge or

In the United States, about 16 million people suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is second only to heart disease as a cause of disability that forces people to stop working. It is the fourth most common cause of death, accounting for more than 100,000 deaths per year in the United States; the number of deaths from COPD has increased by 40% over the last 20 years. More than 95% of all deaths from COPD occur in people older than age 55. COPD affects men more often than women and is more often fatal in men, although there has been a recent increase in the rate of deaths in women. COPD is also more often fatal in whites than in nonwhites and in blue-collar workers than in white-collar workers.

COPD is associated with a number of respiratory disorders, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. In some cases, chronic obstruction pulmonary disease occurs with asthma. Chronic obstruction disease causes lung damage as the disease progresses. Without treatment, the lungs' capacity to move air deteriorates. COPD is a serious disease: it is listed as the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. The vast majority of COPD cases are linked to long-term smoking. » Current Clinical Trial Listings:

Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Severe obstruction of bronchial air flow typically from bronchitis and/or emphysema. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), also called chronic obstructive lung disease, is a term that is used for two closely related diseases of the respiratory system: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. In many patients these diseases occur together, although there may be more symptoms of one than the other. Most patients with these diseases have a long history of heavy cigarette smoking. Researching symptoms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Further information about the symptoms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is available including a list of symptoms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease , or alternatively return to research other symptoms in the

diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and in some cases asthma. COPD is a leading cause of death, illness, and disability in the United States. In 2000, 119,000 deaths, 726,000 hospitalizations, and 1.5 million hospital emergency departments visits were caused by COPD. An additional 8 million cases of hospital outpatient treatment or treatment by personal physicians were linked to COPD in 2000. What causes it In the United States, tobacco use is a key factor in the development and progression of COPD, but asthma, exposure to air pollutants in the home and workplace, genetic factors, and respiratory infections also play a role. In the developing world, indoor air quality is thought to play a larger role in the development and progression of COPD than it does in the United States. Who has it In the United States, an estimated 10 million adults were diagnosed with COPD in 2000, but data from a national health survey suggest that as many as 24 million Americans are affected.

Generally, two distinct diseases are involved: emphysema and chronic bronchitis . According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 75% of deaths from COPD that occur in developed countries are directly related to smoking tobacco. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis cause excessive inflammatory processes that eventually lead to abnormalities in lung structure that permanently obstruct airflow (hence the term "chronic obstructive"). A recent study shows that adults with asthma are 12 times more likely to develop COPD than those who do not have the condition. Incidence and Prevalence The American Lung Association and the World Health Organization track respiratory disease and mortality rates related to tobacco use.

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Recently, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has gained interest as a major public health concern and is currently the focus of intense research because of its persistently increasing prevalence, mortality, and disease burden. COPD currently ranks as the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, surpassed only by heart disease, cancer, and cerebrovascular disease. Furthermore, COPD is projected to become the fifth leading burden of disease worldwide by the year 2020. COPD is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and is the only disease for which the prevalence and mortality rates continue to rise. This chapter presents a concise overview of COPD. We address its definition, prevalence and epidemiology, pathology and pathophysiology, diagnosis, therapy, and outcomes.
