    How common is chronic fatigue?
Feeling tired is common. One in five men, and one in three women will say they feel tired most of the time. If you work long hours, have family problems, and are suffering from stress, it is quite common to feel tired. However, only a few people really have the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Another name for the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is Myalgic Encephalitis (or ME for short).
Definition of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
    CFS is defined as -
"Severe disabling fatigue which lasts at least 6 months, made worse by minimal physical or mental exertion, and for which there is no adequate medical explanation."
    Criteria for diagnosis
Here are guidelines for diagnosing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
    • A feeling of fatigue (severe tiredness) is the main symptom
    • There is a definite time when it began, and not a lifelong feeling of tiredness

    Executive Summary
The term Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) refers to a symptom complex of marked and prolonged fatigue for which no identifiable cause can be found. Other symptoms frequently present include generalised muscle weakness and pain, low-grade fever, sore throat, painful lymph nodes in the neck and armpits, exacerbation of fatigue after moderate or strenuous exercise for periods of 24 hours or more, transient pains in a number of joints, and various disturbances of neuropsychological function including confusion, irritability, poor concentration and visual changes. Despite the range of other symptoms being extensive, none are essential for the diagnosis to be made in the presence of profound fatigue of 6 months or more duration. Chronic fatigue syndrome is frequently seen in association with psychiatric illnesses such as depression and anxiety but has not been shown to be causally related to any particular psychiatric disease.

  • Have severe chronic fatigue of six months or longer duration with other known medical conditions excluded by clinical diagnosis, and
  • Concurrently have four or more of the following symptoms: substantial impairment in short-term memory or concentration, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, muscle pain, multi-joint pain without swelling or redness, headaches of a new type, pattern or severity, unrefreshing sleep, and post-exertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours. The symptoms must have persisted or recurred during six or more consecutive months of illness and must not have predated the fatigue.

    WHAT IS CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME?
We all get tired. Many of us have felt depressed at times. But the mystery known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is not like the normal ups and downs we experience in everyday life. The early sign of this illness is a strong and noticeable fatigue that comes on suddenly and often comes and goes or never stops. You sometimes feel too tired to do normal activities or are easily exhausted with no apparent reason. Unlike the mind fog of a serious hangover, to which researchers have compared CFS, the profound weakness of CFS does not go away with a few good nights of sleep. Instead, it slyly steals your energy and vigor over months and sometimes years.
    HOW DOES CFS BEGIN?
For many people, CFS can begin after a bout with a minor illness such as a cold, or an intestinal bug. Often, people say that their illnesses started during a period of high stress. In others, CFS develops more gradually, with no clear illness or other event starting it.
