Chlamydia
What is it?
Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease in Canada. It is caused by an intracellular parasite, Chlamydia trachomatis. Because it is transmitted in body fluids and doesn't survive outside the body, chlamydia is most often spread by having unprotected vaginal or anal sex with an infected person or from an infected mother to her child during birth. This infection is rarely, if ever, passed from one woman to another during sex. A person can carry and transmit the infection for years without symptoms until they are properly treated.
What are the symptoms?
Most women (80 percent) don't have symptoms and neither do about 50 percent of men. Some possible symptoms if you do have them are:
  • vaginal discharge
  • irritation
  • unusual vaginal bleeding
  • deep pain with intercourse
  • painful urination
Male symptoms include:
  • frequent urination with a burning sensation
  • watery discharge from the penis
  • burning or itching around the opening of the penis
  • epididymitis (swelling of the testicles)
How is it diagnosed?

Chlamydia
Chlamydia ("kla-mid-ee-uh") is one of the leading sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the United States today. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 4 million new cases occur each year. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), a serious complication of chlamydial infection, has emerged as a major cause of infertility among women of childbearing age. Genital chlamydial infection is caused by a bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis , and is transmitted during vaginal or anal sexual contact with an infected partner. A pregnant woman may pass the infection to her newborn during delivery, with subsequent neonatal eye infection or pneumonia. The annual cost of chlamydial infections and their sequelae is estimated to exceed $2 billion. Symptoms Men and women with C. trachomatis

WASHINGTON - As many as 1 in 20 teenage girls and women and more than 2 percent of the general population in America are infected with chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease, U.S. researchers reported. Pregnant women attending publicly funded clinics and economically disadvantaged youth are especially at risk of the bacterial infection, which can cause serious problems including infertility if untreated, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey found. "STDs often have no symptoms and therefore frequently go unrecognized and undiagnosed," said Dr. John Douglas, director of the CDC's STD prevention programs. "Stepping up screening and prevention efforts is critical to ensuring that young people do not suffer the long-term effects of untreated chlamydia, including infertility," Douglas said in a statement. Federally funded efforts have prevented millions of infections and saved an estimated $5 billion in direct medical costs over the past 30 years, the CDC told a meeting of the International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research in Amsterdam.

Sex is a normal and pleasurable part of life, however, it is possible that if one person has an infection it can pass to another person through the close physical contact that happens when you have sex. Infections that are spread in this way are known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In 2003, there were over 700,000 STIs diagnosed at GUM clinics in the UK. The possibility of getting an infection may not be something that you have ever thought about. Finding out about STIs is one way of avoiding them. If you feel you need more information then don't be afraid to ask. STIs are most commonly passed on through vaginal, oral and anal sex, and sharing sex toys. You don't need to have a lot of sexual partners to get an STI although the more partners that you have, the greater your chance is that one of them may pass an infection to you. Common symptoms of an STI are:
    • unusual discharge or liquid from vagina or penis pain or burning when you pass urine itches, rashes, lumps or blisters around the genitals or anus

    Chlamydia
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: A sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Chlamydia infection is caused by the organism Chlamydia trachomatis . It is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States. Sexually active individuals and individuals with multiple partners are at highest risk. Chlamydia may be acquired jointly with gonorrhea and/or syphilis, so individuals with one sexually transmitted disease must be screened for other sexually transmitted diseases as well. Untreated chlamydia can lead to pelvic infection and infertility. In men, chlamydia may produce symptoms similar to those of gonorrhea (discharge from penis or rectum, burning on urination or defecation), and can also cause epididymitis and orchitis . However, up to 25% of infected men may have no symptoms.
    Chlamydia (female)
: only approximately 30% of women will have symptoms due to chlamydia hence screening sexually active women for chlamydia is necessary to diagnose and treat asymptomatic women in order to decrease the risk of developing complications. Women who do have symptoms may note vaginal discharge, burning on urination, or abdominal pain.

    Causes
    A bacterium called Chlamydia trachomatis
Chlamydia infects the neck of the womb (cervix) in women and the tube inside the penis (urethra) in men. Sometimes it can infect the urethra in women, and the throat and anus of either sex. If left untreated, chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women which can lead to chronic pain and/or the inability to get pregnant.
    Symptoms
Women often have no signs or symptoms with chlamydia. Sometimes there is an unusual vaginal fluid (discharge) or a burning sensation when urinating or vaginal bleeding after sex. Deep pain during vaginal sex may also be a sign of chlamydial infection in women. Men may have no signs or symptoms either. There may be a white or clear fluid (discharge) from the penis and/or a burning sensation during urination.

Chlamydia (cla-mid-ee-ah) is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis. It can spread from person to person during sexual intercourse (vaginal and anal) when a person's mucous membranes come into contact with the vaginal secretions or semen of an infected person. It can be transmitted without complete insertion of a penis into the vagina or anus. It is less likely, although possible, to be transmitted to the throat during oral sex. It can also be passed from mother to newborn during childbirth. Chlamydia infections are treatable and curable with antibiotics. How many people in San Francisco have it?
Chlamydia is the most frequently reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States. In 2003, there were almost 3,500 new cases of chlamydia infection in San Francisco. This rate has held steady since 2002, and is higher than the rates for Los Angeles and California as a whole. In San Francisco, young African-American women aged 15-19 and gay men are at highest risk for new chlamydial infections. Why worry about chlamydia?

Originally Published: September 20, 1996 / Updated on: July 17, 1998 Dear Alice, Could you tell me about the symptoms of chlamydia and if one test is enough to detect that disease? Thank you. Curious Dear Curious, Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Chlamydia trachomatis . As with some other STIs, the most common symptom of chlamydia is no symptom at all . Comparatively, more women than men are asymptomatic — up to 80 percent of women and 40 percent of men diagnosed with chlamydia may not experience symptoms. Semen or cervical secretions transmit chlamydia. It usually takes one to three weeks for symptoms to show up, if at all. If you've given unprotected oral sex to someone with chlamydia, it's possible, but unlikely, to get a sore throat. This is even less likely if you've gone down on a woman — the penis is much more effective in transmitting chlamydia to a partner's throat. In men, the chlamydiae make their way into the urethra, where they can cause discharge and burning when urinating, especially during that first trip to the bathroom in the morning. Some women will experience itching, vaginal discharge, and burning during urination. More often than not, the infection will manifest as mucopurulent cervicitis, a discharge around the cervix. This symptom often goes unnoticed because it is difficult to detect without examination by a health care provider.
