    • Genital chlamydial infection is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium, chlamydia trachomatis. It is the most commonly reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection at GUM clinics in the United Kingdom. The number of diagnoses in the UK has risen steadily since the mid-1990s, and the latest figures show that diagnoses rose by 8% (from 85,397 to 92,614) between 2003 and 2004, a rise of 12% in males and 6% in females.

Chlamydia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Chlamydia is currently one of the most common sexually transmitted disease — about 4 million cases of chlamydia occur in the USA each year. However, about half of all men and three-quarters of all women who have chlamydia have no symptoms and don't know that they have the disease. The disease is transmitted by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium . It can be serious but it is easily cured if detected in time. It is also, and possibly more importantly, the biggest preventable cause of blindness in the world. Blindness occurs as a complication of trachoma (chlamydia conjunctivitis). Almost half of all women who get chlamydia and aren't treated by a doctor will get pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), a generic term for infection of the uterus fallopian tubes , and/or ovaries . PID can cause scarring inside the reproductive organs , which can later cause serious complications, including chronic pelvic pain, difficulty becoming

by Tamar Nordenberg Anna Lange (not her real name) had no symptoms when she went to a Wake County, N.C., sexually transmitted diseases clinic earlier this year to pick up her birth control pills. But a routine test revealed that the 20-year-old Lange had chlamydia. "She came in and had no complaints," says Peter Leone, M.D., the clinic's medical director, "and then 'boom'she was diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease." The sexually transmitted disease chlamydia usually comes with no telltale symptoms, so most people don't even know when they are infected. But left untreated, the so-called "silent epidemic" of chlamydia threatens to cause reproductive damage and infertility in many of the 3 million to 4 million Americans who get it each year. "Chlamydia's consequences can be devastating," says Diane Mitchell, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist and medical reviewer with the Food and Drug Administration. Routine chlamydia screening and early, effective treatment are the keys to reducing chlamydia's toll, according to Penny Hitchcock, chief of the National Institutes of Health's sexually transmitted disease branch. Two recent medical advances, she says, constitute "very important breakthroughs" in controlling the rampant disease: a new drug treatment recently approved by FDA to cure chlamydia in a single oral dose, and a urine-based screening test that, unlike other tests, does not require a swab sample of cells from the genital area.

What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia (pronounced "cla-Mid-ee-uh") is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States. It is many times more common than gonorrhea. The bacteria that causes the disease is Chlamydia trachomatis , hence the name, Chlamydia. Approximately 60 to 80% of women will have no noticeable symptoms of an infection, and when symptoms are present they are usually mild. Chlamydia infections are not limited to women. In men, the bacteria can cause infections of the urethra, prostate gland, and rectum, as well as epididymitis, a painful inflammation of the tiny structures inside the testicles where sperm are stored. How is Chlamydia Transmitted? Chlamydia infection is primarily transmitted from person to person through contact with the mucous membranes of the vagina, urethra, rectum or mouth. The chief mode of transmission is sexual intercourse-oral, anal or genital. The infection can be present for long periods of time, even years, without any signs of infection. Is Chlamydia new?

If a baby becomes infected during delivery, he or she may develop eye infections (pink eye, conjunctivitis) or breathing problems. Chlamydia is known as a “silent” disease because about 3 out of 4 women who are infected don’t have symptoms. Some women have a change in vaginal discharge or pain when they urinate. Health care providers use lab tests to diagnose chlamydia in women. Some tests use a urine sample. Other tests use a sample taken from the woman’s cervix. Chlamydia is treated with antibiotics.

Facts About Chlamydia
Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. The Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention estimates that more than 3 million cases of chlamydia occur every year. For those wondering what chlamydia looks like, it is unlikely that you will find any chlamydia pictures, as the infection does not cause any external sores to form. Type of Infection : Bacterial; from the chlamydia trachomatis strain which lives in vaginal fluid and semen Mode of Transmission : Mainly through vaginal and anal sex; although it is much less common, it can also be passed on via oral sex and hand to eye contact Symptoms : Chlamydia is known as the "silent" disease since up to 75% of women and 50% of men infected with it display no symptoms. When there are any chlamydia signs and symptoms, it is most likely abnormal vaginal or penile discharge (mucus or pus) and painful urination. Symptoms of chlamydia in women can also include abdominal pain, low-grade fever, pain during intercourse and the need to urinate more often. Chlamydia in men can also make itself known through inflammation of the rectum and swelling or pain in the testicles. Treatment : Antibiotics are used to cure the infection. The most common ones include doxycycline and azithromycin. Depending on the type you are prescribed, the course of treatment can last from one to seven days. To ensure proper treatment, make sure you finish all your medication and refrain from having sex until your have finished treatment and tests have shown the infection to be gone. It is important to be treated as soon as possible. While the infection can be cleared up, any damage it may have done prior to treatment cannot be undone.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the bacterium that causes chlamydia and trachoma, an eye disease. Chlamydia is spread by sexual contact or from mother to baby The bacterium is found in infected body fluids from the penis or vagina and spread by direct sexual contact.
If a woman has chlamydia and is not treated, she may get a serious infection in her reproductive organs, making it difficult for her to have children. The eyes, ears, and lungs of babies can get infected if the mother has chlamydia at the time of childbirth. This type of lung infection in babies can be very serious. Many men and women can have chlamydia and have no symptoms. They can still pass it to their sex partners even if they have no symptoms.

Chlamydia is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is caused by the bacteria chlamydia trachomatis and can infect the penis, vagina, cervix, anus, urethra, or eye. Because the signs of chlamydia often go unnoticed, an individual can develop serious health complications before they recognize that they are infected.
Is it common?
There are approximately 3 million cases of chlamydia in the US each year and 3 out of every 4 cases reported were in individuals under the age of 25. Though the disease is easily treatable, it can be present without showing any symptoms and individuals can go a long time without knowing they are infected. Because individuals don't always know they are infected, the number of chlamydia infections is significantly underreported.

Chlamydia
What is Chlamydia? Like gonorrhea, chlamydia infections primarily affect the urethra in men and the cervix in women. There has been a steady increase in the reported cases of chlamydia, particularly among 15 to 25 year olds, and is considered one of the most common STDs. Chlamydia is now recognized as a major cause of pelvic inflammatory disease which can cause infertility. What are the symptoms of Chlamydia? Chlamydia is a particularly dangerous disease because there are many infected individuals who experience no symptoms. Men who do experience symptoms typically experience watery or milky discharge from the urethra as well as painful urination. In addition, chlamydia may cause the testicles to become swollen causing irritation. Women may also experience symptoms such as discomfort when urinating which becomes more frequent as the condition develops. Women often do not experience any symptoms, and therefore may have a higher propensity to carry the disease untreated. Chlamydia will also increase vaginal discharge and possibly light bleeding between periods. This bleeding may indicate that the infection has spread to the uterus. Anal infection may cause discomfort and produce discharge.
