Chlamydia trachomatis . You can get genital chlamydial infection during oral, vaginal, or anal sexual contact with an infected partner. It can cause serious problems in men and women, such as penile discharge and infertility respectively, as well as in newborn babies of infected mothers. Chlamydia is one of the most widespread bacterial STIs in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 3 million people are infected each year. Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis , which can damage a woman's reproductive organs. Even though symptoms of chlamydia are usually mild or absent, serious complications that cause irreversible damage, including infertility, can occur "silently" before a woman ever recognizes a problem. Chlamydia also can cause discharge from the penis of an infected man. Chlamydia is the most frequently reported bacterial sexually transmitted disease in the United States. In 2002, 834,555 chlamydial infections were reported to CDC from 50 states and the District of Columbia. Under-reporting is substantial because most people with chlamydia are not aware of their infections and do not seek testing. Also, testing is not often done if patients are treated for their symptoms. An estimated 2.8 million Americans are infected with chlamydia each year. Women are frequently re-infected if their sex partners are not treated. Chlamydia can be transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Chlamydia can also be passed from an infected mother to her baby during vaginal childbirth.

    What is chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a tiny bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis.
If you haven't heard of chlamydia, you're in good company - a substantial proportion of the UK population hasn't heard of it either.
Why should I know about it?
Chlamydia is the most common treatable STD. It often presents no symptoms in men or women unless it leads to complications - when treatment can sometimes be too late to stop permanent damage.
    • In some women, infection can damage the Fallopian tubes, which conduct eggs from the ovaries to the womb. This can stop the tubes working properly and they can become completely blocked.
Chlamydia is the most common preventable cause of infertility in women. When the fallopian tubes are blocked, no pregnancy is possible naturally. One option is IVF (in-vitro fertilisation), but availability on the NHS is still patchy and has variable success rates: usually no more than 20 per cent of women end up with a baby.

Experts advise testing teens twice yearly for chlamydia
    August 11, 1998
Web posted at: 10:26 p.m. EDT (0226 GMT) From CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Steve Salvatore NEW YORK (CNN) A new study is prompting health experts to call for more frequent tests to screen sexually active teenagers for chlamydia, a lesser-known sexually transmitted disease. In the latest Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers at Johns Hopkins University reported on a study of more than 3,000 sexually active females in Baltimore, Maryland. "Twenty percent of all the tests done in girls between the ages of 12 and 19 were positive for chlamydia," said Dr. Gale Burstein, an adolescent medicine specialist. "Also, 30 percent of the girls had at least one positive chlamydia test in the study." The higher-than-expected rate of chlamydia infections in just one inner city prompted the authors of the study to recommend doubling the frequency of chlamydia screenings to twice a year.
