What was the main issue or question being addressed? The speaker reviewed clinical research studies on the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in Children and Adolescents. The current incidence is: Major Depressive Disorder: 2% for children, 6% for adolescents
Dysthymia: 1% for children, 5% for adolescents. Back to top.
What are the main findings or conclusions? Back to top.
Are there any practical implications? Existing research in the field, and clinical experience, suggest that MDD may best be considered a chronic disease, similar to diabetes or asthma. Therefore, treatment consists of (1) managing the acute stage of the disease (2) managing any relapse (3) managing any recurrence (4) helping the child and parent attend to the warning signs and symptoms to prevent or minimize problems throughout one's life time. Childhood depression requires response from adults
By Abigail Van Buren
Dear Abby:
My heart goes out to the suicidal 12-year-old from Pennsylvania. That letter was a cry for help, and I urge him or her to seek help immediately today, not tomorrow; now, not later. No 12-year-old deserves to feel the way that child does. I can empathize because my 12-year-old son is struggling with major depression. Neither his father nor I realized it until one day he wrote a suicide note. Like the writer of that letter, my son thought if he told anyone he felt depressed he wouldn't be believed. Believe me, when his suicide note was found, although he did not actually try to harm himself, it was taken very seriously. Treatment started that very day. We are not so far along on this journey that we know exactly what the future holds, but we do know our son is in a much happier place now with proper therapy and medication.

Dealing With Childhood Depression

By Ginny Hermann When we think of children and depression, the picture that most likely pops into mind is that of a lonely teenager, diary in hand, languishing in the isolation of her bedroom, or we envision a misfit adolescent, sulking in a corner with only his Game Boy and comic books for company. But depression isn't just a teenage or adolescent problem. The "blues" can strike as early as kindergarten and can progress into an extremely serious illness if left untreated. According to Ellie Epstein, an employee assistance program counselor with Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Neb., childhood depression is more common than you would think. "There are many things that can contribute to a young child's bout with depression," says Epstein. "A stressful life event is usually found to be the trigger in children ages 6 through 9. Since depression has very little to do with biology at this age, the causes are usually found to be environmental, something that has occurred either inside or outside the family unit." The Effects of Tragedy
Unpleasant family events – such as death, divorce, family conflict, illness or physical disability – can turn an otherwise happy-go-lucky youngster into a sad, withdrawn child.

How To Tell if Your Child Is Depressed
As a parent, you want what is best for your child, and you want her to be happy. When she was really young, it was easy for you to take care of her. If she fell or scraped a knee, you made the pain disappear by putting on a bandage, wrapping your arms around her, and telling her, "Everything will be okay." Now that she is getting a little older, a simple hug and a Band-aid may not be enough to make her feel better. As your child begins to experience life's ups and downs in a more intense way, she may pull away or act out in a manner that leaves you confused, angry or scared. Your child may seem to be in a permanent bad mood, sleeping too much, or eating too little. These are signs that your child may be depressed. There are things you can do to help your child, however, and learning more about depression is a great first step!
What To Know
Recent studies show that, at any given time, as many as 1 in every 33 children may suffer from depression. The rate of depression among adolescents is closer to that of depression in adults, and may be as high as one in eight. The first question you may be asking is, "How do I tell if my child is depressed?" Has your child been under stress lately? Has he experienced loss, or is there depression in your family? Does your child get anxious or have a learning disorder? Young people with depression may have a hard time coping with everyday activities and responsibilities, have difficulty getting along with others, and suffer from low self-esteem.

A Novel Clinical Intervention for Severe Childhood Depression and Anxiety
Vicky Flory Australian Catholic University A novel clinical intervention, Emotionally Attuned Parenting, was developed and trialed for severe childhood depression and anxiety. The intervention was designed to alleviate child psychopathology by improving quality of parenting. Parents of eleven children aged between 6 and 13 years who were outpatients in a public mental health service completed treatment. Parents received between 5 and 13 treatment sessions that aimed to increase parental empathy and improve emotional care of the child.

Childhood Disorders "Part of being a parent is educating yourself about your child's health and well-being. The information below can help you learn more about the types of mental illnesses that children may experience as they grow and develop."
Corabell Arps, MD Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at The Acadia Hospital Childhood is often thought of as being one of the happiest times in a person's life. A time where a carefree attitude and a worry-less life provide the environment in which a child grows and develops. For many children, however, this isn't always the case. Research shows that 12 million American children suffer from some type of mental illness. It also shows that fewer than one in five receive the treatment they need to recover from their illness. When we think about topics such as depression or anxiety, we don't normally think of them as including young people. Most adults don't consider that emotional problems may effect a child, too. The reality is that children today deal with emotional issues and stress, the same as adults. Understandably, they often have a more difficult time handling and overcoming painful emotions and situations.
