Dear Friends
What Is Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease? What Causes CMT? What Happens to Someone With CMT, and How Is It Treated? ... MDA Is Here to Help You George J. Donahue Dear Friends: I've lived with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease This pamphlet has been prepared to give you the basic knowledge about CMT and Dejerine-Sottas disease that you'll need, in order to help you prepare for changes that may occur in your future. You'll learn that CMT is usually quite slow in progression and that, while it presents challenges in daily life, there are many techniques and devices to help you adapt to those challenges. You'll read that many different genetic causes of CMT have been found, and cases vary greatly. But CMT is almost never life-threatening, and it seldom affects the heart and breathing functions. Another important extended family in my life is the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which offers a great program of services, leads the world in CMT research and keeps us well informed about the disease. See " MDA Is Here to Help You ," for details of the Association's program.

CMT History
Last updated: 1/18/1998
Naming CMT and the race to publish first
Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome is named after three doctors: Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893), Pierre Marie (1853-1940) and Howard H. Tooth (1856-1926).
Charcot
Charcot is a famous French neurologist who has been called the Father of Neurology. He is credited with identifying: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also called Charcot's disease; Charcot Foot, or more generally Charcot Joint, a condition most often associated with diabetics; and other diseases. At one point in time, ALS, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and CMT were collectively called Charcot's disease, but the name Charcot's disease is now used exclusively to describe ALS.
Marie
Tooth
At the same time, Howard H. Tooth was working on his thesis for the MD degree at Cambridge University in England. His thesis was titled: The Peroneal Type of Progressive Muscular Atrophy , London: H. K. 1886. Although Tooth's thesis was not published until three months after the paper by Charcot and Marie, Tooth's work was almost completed at the time the article was published by Drs. Charcot and Marie.

Symptoms include numbness and wasting of muscle tissue, first in the feet and legs, then in the hands and arms. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Charcot-Marie-Tooth diseases involve damage to nerves (neuropathy), usually from loss of the electrical insulation ( myelin ) around nerve fibers. All nerves are affected, but motor nerves (the nerves that stimulate movement) are most severely affected. The nerves in the legs are affected first and most severely. Symptoms usually begin between mid-childhood and early adulthood. The disorder is inherited, with

What is Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease?
Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is named after the three neurologists who first described the condition in 1886. Many different names have been used to describe Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease but the other commonly used name is hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy . This is an accurate term as it refers to the two primary features of this condition i.e the condition is hereditary and it affects the motor and sensory peripheral nerves.
Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is also referred to as peroneal muscular atrophy because the peroneal muscles on the outer side of the calves are particularly affected. Other names include Dejerine-Sottas disease and hereditary hypertrophic neuropathy. However, the term Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is now the favoured term and is most commonly used in the literature.
