Cerebral Palsy
What is cerebral palsy?
Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most common conditions seen by pediatric neurologists. A major problem faced by both clinicians and parents is that there is no absolute definition of CP. Many clinicians, however, would agree that CP is an abnormality of motor function (as opposed to mental function) that is acquired at an early age, usually less than a year of age, and is due to a brain lesion that is non-progressive. (Motor function is the ability to move and control movements. A brain lesion is any abnormality of brain structure or function. The use of the term non- progressive means that the lesion does not produce ongoing degeneration of the brain.) CP affects approximately 1 to 3 out of every thousand children born, making the condition not only a burden on the families, but also a significant financial burden on society.

Cerebral palsy
Dr Trisha Macnair There are many misconceptions surrounding cerebral palsy. We take a look at the causes, effects and how the various problems it may bring can be managed.
In this article
What is it? Common problems Learning difficulties Causes ... Treatment "My child is a person in their own right. My child is a breathing, thinking, loving human being. I have accepted that you need to assign labels, but only because the labels may help to explain my child's differences. That does not make my child that label, and that label makes my child no less a person than any other person on this earth. Do not look at that label first, look at my child first..." Disease labels or diagnoses have their uses, but sometimes they can get in the way, as this extract from a poem called My Child is Not a Label by Denise Ulman (a mother of a disabled child) points out. In many conditions, but especially those that cause disability, it's an easy mistake to focus on the diagnosis rather than on the strengths and needs of the person behind it, as people with cerebral palsy might agree.

    Welcome to my website!
My name is Sandra-Leigh Montford. I was born in Kaikohe, New Zealand in 1962. Shortly after my birth, doctors announced to my parents that I had a physical disability known as Cerebral Palsy. At the age of ten, while living in Hokitika, I was introduced to poetry at school. After I had written a handful of poems at the direction of my teacher, I made an independent decision to be a poet. My poetry has been described as amusing, poignant, and sometimes confronting . Here are some sample Poems to tantalise you! In recent years I have focussed my spare time on refining my skills as a Performance Poet. I have appeared on television, radio, and performed in international festivals. Read my Biography for details, including an in-depth account of my most recent appearance! My book launch was held 5 June 2001. Guess who my guest readers were?! These are three ways you can help me

Cerebral Palsy is a group of disorders characterized by loss of movement or loss of other nerve functions. The disorders are caused by injuries to the brain that occur during fetal development or near the time of birth. Infants born premature have a slightly higher incidence of cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy may also occur during early infancy as a result of cerebral injury caused by illnesses (encephalitis, meningitis herpes simplex infections , and so on), head injury that results in subdural hematoma, blood vessel injuries, and many others. What Causes Cerebral Palsy? Cerebral palsy results from injury to the cerebrum. The cerebrum is the largest portion of the brain and is involved with higher mental faculties, sensations, and voluntary muscle activities. Symptoms? There are many symptoms and not everyone will experience all of the symptoms. Symptoms are usually apparent before age 2 and in severe cases may appear as early as three months. The symptoms include: seizures, muscle contractions, difficulty sucking or feeding, irregular breathing, delayed development of motor skills, such as reaching, sitting, rolling, crawling, walking, motormental retardation, mental retardation, speech abnormalities (dysarthria), visual abnormalities , hearing abnormalities, spasticity, progressive joint contractures, limited range of motion and peg teeth
