Cincinnati Hyperbarics
is a Ohio based clinic specializing in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a form of treatment that allows a person to breath 100% oxygen while they are in a pressurized chamber. Hyperbaric Oxygen has been in use for many years to treat many different conditions, such as, stroke , head injury, cerebral palsy, bone-fracture, migraine headaches, chronic fatigue-syndrome (CFS), sports injuries, AIDS, sickle cell anemia, acute spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis (MS), Lyme disease , diabetic retinopathy, colitis, and diabetic foot ulcers. HBOT enhances the body's natural-healing process virtually risk free. Cincinnati Hyperbarics was founded by Dr. Ted Cole. Dr. Cole has been in practice for over 15 years, and is at the forefront of innovative and effective medical treatments. After a great deal of research and study, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been added as an extension to the therapies available to his patients. Dr. Cole knows that hyperbaric oxygen is best used as a part of an overall approach to one's health care, and should not be viewed as a "miracle cure" for every condition. Cincinnati Hyperbarics is owned and operated by Dr. Cole as a freestanding center. Unlike many other facilities, it is not operated by technicians or a "medical director" that is rarely, if ever, actually on the premises of the hyperbaric facility. At Cincinnati Hyperbarics, Dr. Cole evaluates every patient. He designs and supervises every patient's course of therapy. He monitors every patient's progress, and is able to provide other treatments to accelerate and enhance each person's recovery. By using his vast experience and knowledge to combine hyperbaric oxygen with other therapies, he is able to ensure that you get the type of care that is best for you and your particular condition.

Trekking The Inca Trail For Scope
My name is Ian Simmins, I live in Ottery St. Mary in Devon, England. I have two children, Kathryn aged six and Joshua aged two (at the time of wititng). Joshua has cerebral palsy (brain damage at birth or during pregnancy) and on the 27th May 2004 I went to trek the Inca trail in Peru in aid of Scope. My goal was to reach the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu. This was the 'lost' city that had lain undiscovered by the Western world for about 500 years until a Yale University graduate called Hiram Bingham found it again in 1911. I started my journey with 74 other people, we all had to raise a minimum of £2,600 to guarantee our place on the trip, I managed to raise £5,200 which I was really pleased with and as a group we raised over £250,000. Scope is the UK disability organisation focusing on people with Cerebral Palsy, it also campaigns for disabled people achieving equality. I spent the night in Heathrow Terminal 2 and gradually met other members of the trip. Three people that I met around midnight stand out and they were Chris from Macclesfield, Joe from Knutsford and Tony from Stockport we ambled the night away on Costa Coffee's finest coffee and tea complimented by Joe's packet of chocolate hob nobs. Thanks Joe!

    Types of Cerebral Palsy

What is Cerebral Palsy? Cerebral Palsy is a term used to describe a set of chronic disorders that impair the brain's ability to adequately control movement and posture. This disruption in the brain’s ability to adequately control movement and posture is caused by faulty development or damage to the motor areas in the brain. By definition, Cerebral Palsy refers to the brain’s two halves (cerebral) and, to any disorder involving the impairment of control of bodily movement (palsy). Generally, there are four types of Cerebral palsy: Spastic cerebral palsy Athetoid (or dyskinetic cerebral palsy Ataxic cerebral palsy , and mixed forms . Common causes of cerebral palsy are breech presentation, complicated labor or delivery, low birthweight, nervous system malformations, maternal bleeding or severe proteinuria, maternal hyperthyroidism, seizures in the newborn and doctor errors. Symptoms may include difficuty breathing, low birthweight, delayed development and mental retardation.
The United Cerebral Palsy Associations estimate that more than 500,000 Americans have cerebral palsy. There is no cure for cerebral palsy.

    Maternal Infection and Cerebral Palsy
CHICAGO (Reuter) - The risk of developing cerebral palsy rose nine-fold in babies of normal birth weight who were exposed to infection in their mothers' wombs, a study said Tuesday. Judith Grether of the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program and Karin Nelson of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke studied 424 babies born in Northern California from 1983 to 1985, 46 of whom suffered from disabling spastic cerebral palsy. ``Maternal fever exceeding 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit) in labor was associated with a 9.3-fold increase in the risk of unexplained spastic cerebral palsy, as was a clinical diagnosis of chorioamnionitis,'' they wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Chorioamnionitis is an infection involving the membrane surrounding the fetus, the amniotic sac and amniotic fluid. ``One or more indicators of maternal infection, placental or other, during the admission for delivery were noted in 22 percent of children with unexplained cerebral palsy,'' the researchers wrote. Previous research had associated maternal or placental infection with an increased risk of cerebral palsy in low birth weight infants, but not among normal birth weight babies who represent about half of all cases.
