Cerebral palsy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Cerebral palsy Cerebral palsy or CP is a group of permanent disorders associated with developmental brain injuries that occur during fetal development, birth , or shortly after birth. It is characterized by a disruption of motor skills , with symptoms such as spasticity paralysis , or seizures . Cerebral palsy is a form of static encephalopathy . One form of it, spastic diplegia, is sometimes known as Little's disease in the United Kingdom. Properly speaking, the fact that CP does not get better or worse implies that it is a 'condition' (chronic nonprogressive neurological disorder) rather than a 'disease.' The incidence is about 1.5 to 4 per 1000 live births. There is no cure, but therapy has been shown to be helpful in the maintenance of motor functions. While severity varies widely, cerebral palsy ranks among the most costly congenital conditions to manage. Cerebral palsy develops while the brain is under development. 80% of all cases occur before the baby reaches 1 month old, however this disorder can occur within about the first 5 years of life. It is a nonprogressive disorder; once damage to the brain occurs, no additional damage occurs as a result of this condition. Cerebral palsy neither improves nor worsens, though symptoms may seem to increase with time, likely due to the aging process.

Cerebral palsy is not a disease or an illness. It is a disability caused by damage to the brain that can take place before, during, or in the early days after birth. There are many causes of cerebral palsy which include an infection while still in the womb, such as the pregnant mother contracting German measles, a difficult birth, a genetic disorder, a bleed in the baby's brain, or the baby's brain forms abnormally for no apparent reason. Future Event A Future For Felix is a fundraising evening in aid of The Bobath Centre for children with Cerebral Palsy to be held on 10th December 2005. An evening of good food, good wine and some of the best entertainment in the world.
By giving you an exclusive special night to kick-off your Christmas season, the event organisers aim to raise over £60,000 for The Bobath Centre to make a real difference to the lives of special children like Felix. The Bobath Approach
The Bobath approach to the management of children with cerebral palsy was pioneered and developed by Dr Karel and Mrs Berta Bobath. Begun in the 1940's the Bobath Concept is now well known and accepted in many countries as one of the leading approaches.

Bringing FES to South Africa
What is Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)?
Functional Electrical Stimulation is the clinical application of a small electric current to the intact nerves of the body, in order to trigger a muscle contraction. This contraction is then incorporated into a functional activity, for example walking. A clear distinction needs to be made between Therapeutic Stimulation and Functional Stimulation. The former being of an exercise orientation, where one would relax whilst the stimulation works on its own. Functional Electrical Stimulation on the other hand, incorporates this elicited muscle movement into an everyday activity, like standing, walking, reaching out etc. Much work has been done in the field of FES world wide, but one of the largest clinical applications of FES is found in Salisbury District Hospital, Department of Medical Physics, England. They have up to now seen more than 1100 patients, trained more than 300 clinicians, and employ an active Research and Development programme. Their clinical service began in 1994, and they currently employ Clinical Engineers, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists and technicians to this end.

Definition of Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy is a condition caused by damage to the brain, usually occurring before, during or shortly following birth. "Cerebral" refers to the brain and "palsy" to a disorder of movement or posture. It is neither progressive nor communicable. It is also not "curable" in the accepted sense, although education, therapy and applied technology can help persons with cerebral palsy lead productive lives. It is not a disease and should never be referred to as such. It can range from mild to severe. Back to the Table of Contents
Incidence
Between 500,000 - 700,000 Americans have some degree of cerebral palsy. About 3,000 babies are born with the disorder each year, and another 500 or so acquire it in the early years of life.

About CP : What is Cerebral Palsy?
CEREBRAL PALSY: BASIC FACTS
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a permanent physical condition that affects movement. CP can be as mild as just a weakness in one hand ranging to almost complete lack of movement.
There are three main types of CP and each involves the way a person will move. Movements can be unpredictable, muscles can be stiff or tight and in some cases people can have shaky movements or tremors.
People with CP may have seizures and other impairments affecting their speech, vision, hearing and/or intellect.
CP, except in its mildest forms, can be seen in the first 12-18 months of life. It presents when children fail to reach movement milestones. Babies most at risk of cerebral palsy are those born prematurely or with low birth weight.
In Australia it is estimated that a child is born with CP every 18 hours. Worldwide, the incidence of CP is the same - 1 in 400 births. There is no pre-birth test, no known cure and severity is on the increase. For most, the cause of CP is unknown.
Ongoing research is vital for the management of CP. An Australian
