The lens in the eye is an unique physical structure that cannot be repaired or replaced, but instead accumulates any damage that may occur to it over time. About 90% of the material in the lens consists of long stringy proteins laid out like cord wood to allow nearly perfect light transmission. Damage to this precise structure can lead to a cataract. Cataracts are lens opacities that cause 50% of the blindness in underdeveloped countries. In the U.S., cataract surgery is already the most costly surgical expense: some $3.2 billion each year. Cataracts come in a variety of types. The most common type, called a senile cataract, becomes a vision problem almost exclusively in those over the age of 60, although the underlying damage begins decades earlier. Senile cataracts often start as a discoloration of the lens, with loss of vision occurring as this localized structural damage enlarges to form a distinct opacity.

    What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding or opaque area over the lens of the eye - an area that is normally transparent. As this thickening occurs, it prevents light rays from passing through the lens and focusing on the retina - the light sensitive tissue lining located in the back of the eye. This clouding is caused when some of the protein which makes up the lens begins to clump together and interferes with vision. Did You Know? The word "cataract" literally means "waterfall." For persons with an advanced cataract that covers a large portion of the eye lens, vision can be described as trying to see through a waterfall. In its early stages, a cataract may not cause a problem. The cloudiness may affect only a small part of the lens. However, the cataract may grow larger over time and affect more of the lens, making it harder to see. As less light reaches the retina, it becomes increasingly harder to see and vision may become dull and blurry. While cataracts cannot spread from one eye to another, many persons develop cataracts in both eyes.

Aside from weight loss, limiting consumption of carbohydrates holds many profound health benefits. For example, it seems early cortical cataracts, the second most common kind that occurs in the cortex of the lens of the eye, are spurred by the quantity of carbohydrates one consumes, not the quality. Three principal forms of age-related cataracts exist: Nuclear and cortical opacities affect the center and adjacent peripheral tissue of the lens, respectively, while posterior subcapsular (PSC) opacities affect the posterior aspect of the lens. And while few published human studies have evaluated associations between carbohydrates and lens opacification, one study set out to test the hypothesis that long-term carbohydrate intake and dietary glycemic index are linked to the odds of early lens opacities. by Patrick Barry and Dr Tony Phillips Gazing out of their space capsules, Apollo astronauts witnessed sights that humans had never before seen. They saw the breathtaking view of the Earth's bright blue disc against the inky black of space. They saw the far side of the Moon. They also saw strange flashes of light inside their eyeballs Since then, astronauts aboard Skylab, the Shuttle, Mir, and the International Space Station have all reported seeing these flashes. No need to call Agents Mulder and Scully of The X Files, though: what the astronauts are experiencing is space radiation zipping through their eyes like subatomic bullets. When a "bullet" strikes the retina, it triggers a false signal that the brain interprets as a flash of light. Needless to say, this is not good for your eyes. Years after returning to Earth, many of these astronauts developed cataracts - a clouding of the lens, which focuses light onto the retina.

A cataract is a cloudiness or opacity in the normally transparent crystalline lens of the eye. This cloudiness can cause a decrease in vision and may lead to blindness.
The lens of the eye is approximately 35 percent protein and 65 percent water. Degenerative changes in the lens' proteins occur as people age. Changes in the proteins, water content, enzymes, and other chemicals found in the lens are some of the reasons a cataract may form.
The density and location of a cataract determines how badly vision is affected. If the cataract forms in the area of the lens directly behind the pupil, vision may be significantly impaired. One occurring on the outer edges or side of the lens will cause less of a visual problem.
People between the ages of 52-64 have a 50 percent chance of having a cataract, while at least 70 percent of people 70 and older are affected. Cataracts associated with aging most often occur in both eyes, with each cataract progressing at a different rate. Initially, cataracts may not affect vision and if the cataract remains small or at the periphery of the lens, visual changes may be minor.
Cataracts that occur in people other than the elderly are much less common. Congenital cataracts can occur rarely in newborns. Traumatic cataracts may develop after a foreign body or trauma injures the eye. Systemic illnesses, such as diabetes, may also result in cataracts. Toxic cataracts result from chemical toxicity, such as steroid use, and cataracts can also result from exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays.

Cataracts
What?
A cataract is a cloudy or opaque region of the normally transparent lens in the eye. This condition affects 20 million people worldwide.
What are the different types of cataracts?
  • The most common clouding of the lens occurs in the nucleus. Typically this nuclear cataract is found in older people. The lens gradually grows cloudy as the person ages. When the opaque area increases, it prevents light rays from passing through the lens to focus on the retina, the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. There is also a cortical cataract that affects the lens cortex. These opacities originate on the outside edges of the lens and seem like wedge-shaped spokes of a bicycle. When they gradually extend toward the center of the lens, they interfere with the path of light and significantly effect both near and distance vision. People who have diabetes tend to develop these types of cataracts. Finally, subcapsular cataracts start to develop as small opacities at the back of the lens. They are also associated with diabetes. They start to affect vision when they have grown quite significantly. Sometimes when people have to use drops like corticosteroids in their eyes to treat inflammation, the active ingredient in these drops can cause the proteins to become cloudy. Traumatic cataracts form in the back of the cortex and lead to progressive loss of vision. When a sharp object punctures the eye and comes in contact with the lens capsule, the lens totally opacifies either immediately or at some later time.

Cataracts is probably the best known of all eye conditions. Many people believe that cataracts consists of skin growing over the eye, but this is not the case.
Cataracts affect the part of the eye known as the lens. This is behind the coloured part of the eye and it enables the eye to focus. The lens works in the same way as the lens of a camera. It focuses what you see and projects the pictures onto the retina. The optic nerve then sends these pictures to the brain. Normally the lens is clear or transparent, like the white of an egg, but when cataracts form, parts of the lens go cloudy or opaque - like an egg does when it is being boiled. This means that the lens cannot focus properly and the pictures may become blurred.
Although we know a great deal about the condition, we are still largely ignorant about why cataracts form with advancing age. Almost everyone over the age of 50 has some loss of transparency of the lens but what matters is the extent, density and speed with which this opacity progresses.

CATARACTS
Definition:
Cataracts are opacities in the lens of the eye. Many people mistakenly think the cloudiness is on the surface (thought to be a "film" on the eye), but in fact, the cloudy lens is deep inside your pet?s eyeball.
Why Did Your Pet Get Cataracts?
Most cataracts are inherited, and are found in many breeds such as the Cocker Spaniel, Poodle, Husky, Schnauzer, Golden and Labrador Retrievers, and terriers. Other causes of cataracts include: Diabetes, trauma, inflammation, and puppy milk replacers. Many cataracts will worsen to the point of blindness but certain types, especially in the Retriever breeds, can remain small for the entire life of the patient. A common phenomenon occurs in many developing cataracts where the patient can develop an allergic type of reaction to the cataract. This allergic reaction is a LOCAL reaction and can result in many complications such as scar formation and glaucoma.

What are cataracts? "Cataract" is the name used to describe a condition wherein the lens of the eye becomes opacified or cloudy blocking some light from reaching the retina and interfering with vision. Cataracts are multi-faceted. We don't know all the causes, but we do know that time, aging, and hereditary factors all play a role in cataract development. Cataract formation can be accelerated by trauma, diabetes, sunlight, and certain medications. Typically, cataracts occur in adults ("adult onset"), but may occur as a congenital disorder. More than half of all Americans age 65 and older have a cataract. What are the symptoms of cataracts? Early signs of cataracts include blurred or cloudy vision; frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions; night glare and hazy vision; and colors that seem to fade. An ophthalmologist must determine if these symptoms are really caused by a cataract or by some other eye problem that may need treatment. For an adult, a cataract should be removed only when it interferes with lifestyle and makes it difficult to continue normally enjoyable activities. Generally, there is no such thing as a cataract being "ripe" or "not ripe" for removal. What matters is whether or not the problem interferes with vision. In rare instances, a "hyper-mature" cataract may cause elevated eye pressure or inflammation of the eye. In this case, it must be removed immediately. Otherwise, removal of a cataract is at the patient's discretion.

Some babies are born with or acquire opaque areas in the lens, a normally transparent structure that helps the eye focus light and form images. These defects, known as cataracts , may affect either one eye (unilateral) or both eyes (bilateral). Detected early in infancy, most cataracts can be surgically corrected without lasting visual impairments. Screening for them is therefore routine during well-baby medical checkups. Although most children with cataracts are otherwise healthy, this condition may, in rare instances, signal a serious but treatable underlying disease. WHAT CAUSES CATARACTS?
A wide array of conditions can precipitate cataracts, but generally they belong to either of two categories: congenital or acquired. Cataracts can be acquired as a result of an eye injury or as a side effect to treatment with certain drugs or radiation. Childhood diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis can also be associated with cataracts. Children who have these kinds of cataracts tend to have better long-term visual function than infants born with the defect.

Cataract
A cataract is a cloudy area in the eye's lens that can cause vision problems.
Normal vs. Cloudy Lens The most common type is related to aging. More than half of all Americans age 65 and older have a cataract. In the early stages, stronger lighting may lessen the vision problems caused by cataracts. At a certain point, however, surgery may be needed to improve vision. Today, cataract surgery is safe and very effective. What is the lens?
What is a cataract?

What are the symptoms?
What are the different types of cataract? ... What can you do to protect your vision? What is the lens
The lens is the part of the eye that helps focus light onto the retina. The retina is the eye's light-sensitive layer that sends visual signals to the brain. The lens is located just behind the iris, the colored part of the eye. In focusing, the lens changes shape. It becomes rounder when you look at nearby objects and flatter for distant objects. Back to the Top What is a cataract The lens is made mostly of water and protein. The protein is arranged to let light pass through and focus on the retina. Sometimes some of the protein clumps together and starts to cloud a small area of the lens.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cataracts
Q: What is a cataract? A: A cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens, which blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. The lens of the eye is located behind the pupil and the colored iris, and is normally transparent. The lens helps to focus images onto the retina - which transmits the images to the brain. Your vision may become blurry or dim because the cataract stops light from properly passing through to your retina. Q: How common are cataracts? A: Cataracts are a leading cause of blindness among older adults in the United States. More than 20 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts. More than half of all Americans have cataracts by the time they are 80 years old. Cataracts can also sometimes be found in young people or even newborn babies. Q: Am I at risk for developing cataracts? A: The exact cause of a cataract is unknown. Most often, a cataract is part of getting older. As you age, you are at greater risk of developing a cataract. There are also several possible risk factors for cataracts, such as:
