Revised: Think of how hard it is to see through a frosty window in winter. Similarly, the lens of the eye can become fogged, or opaque, resulting in decreased vision. The lens lies behind the iris and is about the size and shape of an aspirin tablet. Its function is to focus light on the retina (at the back of the eye). A cataract is the name given to the clouding of the normally clear lens. This clouding blocks light from the retina. Cataracts are one of the most common causes of impaired vision in the world. Normal Eye Cataract Eye What causes a cataract?
Clouding of the lens is a natural aging process, which usually begins in the third or fourth decade of life. The age at which a cataract may begin to affect a person's vision varies. This depends on the density of the clouding and the extent of the area of the lens involved. In addition to aging, other well-recognized causes of cataracts are:

DIRECTOR'S COMMENTS
Director: Dan Hogan , DVM dfh@vet.purdue.edu Greetings, I would like to introduce myself, my name is Dr. Dan Hogan and I have succeeded Dr. Walt Weirich as the director of the Veterinary Medical Data Base/Canine Eye Registry Foundation. These are big shoes to fill but I will work hard to maintain the excellence of VMDB/CERF. Dr. Weirich should be commended for his many years of tireless work as the director of VMDB/CERF. We have not let him get away that easy and he has agreed to continue his relationship with VMDB/CERF functioning as the executive treasurer. This next year is very exciting for VMDB/CERF as we finalize our conversion of medical coding nomenclature format from SNOVDO to SNOMED-RT. This requires a tremendous amount of work in establishing computer programs and models that allow seamless data entry from the participating institutions. Dr. Al Hahn, Dr. Wilke and Yun Shen are working hard to make this project successful. We are also advancing the concept of "evidence-based medicine" in using our large data-base to help improve the recognition, clinical outcome and therapy of many animal diseases. This will be an area of intense work throughout the veterinary and human medical communities over the next decade.

What are Cataracts?
A cataract is defined as a clouding of the lens of the eye , which results in blurry vision. A cataract forms when protein in the lens begins to clump together and cloud a small area of the eye. This cloud will continue to grow and interfere with vision. Eventually, the cataract will need to be removed from the eye with eye surgery Cataracts can occur in one or both eyes and develop in one of the following four ways:
Age-related - More than 50% of all Americans over the age of 65 have cataracts
Congenital - Cataracts can form at birth or in early childhood
Secondary - Steroid use or health conditions such as diabetes can increase the risk of developing cataracts
Traumatic - Eye injuries can lead to the formation of cataracts, either directly following the injury or years later

DIRECTOR'S COMMENTS
Director: Dan Hogan , DVM dfh@vet.purdue.edu Greetings, I would like to take this time to reiterate the mission of CERF. Our goal is to provide a service that will help ensure a healthy canine population through diligent breeding programs. By working with breeders, we identify dogs that are free from potentially inheritable eye disease to hopefully eliminate these diseases from the general population. This is done by identifying those dogs free of disease with an exam by an ophthalmologist. An individual CERF number is assigned to that dog and can be provided to other breeders or potential new puppy owners. Dogs that are not eligible for a CERF number after examination by an ophthalmologist will have their data entered into a closed research registry. This database is closed meaning that no identifiable data (such as dog name, breeder name etc) is stored, only the results of the exam. This data is used for research and academic interests in furthering the fight against these diseases. It would be helpful to breeders to have the CERF numbers available to a wide audience so their dogs may gain exposure to a larger network of individuals. CERF would like to facilitate this goal by providing CERF numbers to other animal registry programs such as the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the American Kennel Club (AKC). To accomplish this, CERF is providing a line on the examination forms for your signature allowing us to publish your dog's CERF number. It is important to stress here again that in no way shall any data from our research database be released to any outside agencies. We hope everyone will agree to have their CERF numbers distributed to help aid the entire community in achieving our goal. If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to call the CERF office at 765-494-8179.

      Cataracts
      What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding or opaque area over the lens of the eye - an area that is normally transparent. As this thickening occurs, it prevents light rays from passing through the lens and focusing on the retina - the light sensitive tissue lining located in the back of the eye. With some cataracts, this clouding is caused when some of the protein which makes up the lens begins to clump together and interferes with vision. Cataracts are rare in children. They can affect either one eye (unilateral) or both eyes (bilateral). Some cataracts are small and do not cause any visual symptoms. However, other, more progressive, cataracts can cause visual problems in children. Cataracts in children are uncommon.

Overview A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of your eye. It's like trying to see through a frosty or fogged-up window. Clouded vision can make it more difficult to read, drive a car or see the expression on a friend's face. Cataracts commonly affect distance vision and cause problems with glare. They generally don't cause pain, double vision with both eyes open or abnormal tearing. Clouding of the lens is a normal part of getting older. About half of Americans older than 65 have some degree of clouding of the lens. After age 75, as many as 70 percent of Americans have cataracts that are significant enough to impair their vision.

Normally, light passes through the lens (the clear tissue behind the pupil) and focuses on the retina. The retina is the light-sensitive layer of the eye that sends visual signals to the brain. A cataract occurs when the normally clear lens becomes cloudy. Most cataracts develop slowly over time and are a natural result of aging. Anatomy of the Eye The lens is located behind the iris, the brown or blue part of the eye. The lens should be clear to allow light to pass through to the back of the eye where the sight process starts. The lens is enclosed in a thin capsule , which is the consistency of cellophane. In front of the lens, there is a clear fluid, the aqueous , and behind it is a clear, thick fluid, the vitreous that helps to keep the retina attached. The retina is a layer of cells at the back of the eye which functions like the film in a camera. It receives the light, transmits the nerve impulses via the optic nerve to the brain and allows animals to see. Causes of Cataract Cataract may develop because of an inherited defect, as part of the aging process, or secondary to diabetes , trauma, inflammation or retinal degenerations . In dogs, diabetes is a fairly common cause of cataract. Cataract Progression A cataract may affect different parts of the lens but can progress to involve the whole lens and lead to blindness. As cataracts progress, they go through different stages: the immature, mature and hypermature. In the later, hypermature stage, the cataract may leak proteins that cause inflammation inside the eye. This is calle lens-induced uveitis . Eyes that are inflamed are not as good surgical candidates as those which are not. Cataract Surgery is Not 100% Successful Success rates for individual eyes usually range from 85-95%. Complications that may occur are related to the severe

Study Offers New Evidence That Leafy Green Veggies Protect Eyes By Jennifer Warner WebMD Medical News Reviewed By Brunilda Nazario, MD on Friday, December 03, 2004 Dec. 3, 2004 Eating lots of spinach and other leafy green vegetables may help protect your eyes from damage caused by the sun and reduce the risk of cataracts, according to a new study. Although vitamin manufacturers have touted the benefits of the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin in promoting eye health for years, researchers say until now there has been little to support those claims. But their study provides new evidence that these antioxidants, which are found in plants such as spinach, kale, and collard greens, can indeed help prevent cataracts by protecting the eyes from the damaging effects of ultraviolet sunlight. "Our results are the first to provide physical evidence suggesting that lutein and zeaxanthin decrease damage caused by ultraviolet radiation," says researcher Joshua Bomser, assistant professor of nutrition at Ohio State University, in a news release.

Aging and Vision Loss: Cataracts Cataracts are one of the four leading causes of visual impairment among older adults in the United States. A cataract alone may cause visual impairment, or it may develop as a complication of other eye diseases such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye , which is normally clear. Light can no longer pass through the lens easily, and vision becomes hazy or blurred. The amount and pattern of cloudiness varies, and it is possible to be unaware of a cataract’s presence if the center of the lens is not clouded. How quickly a cataract develops varies among individuals. Most cataracts associated with aging develop gradually over a period of years. Cataracts that develop in younger people, or those with diabetes, may progress more rapidly. Cataracts

Eye Cataracts
What is a Cataract?
A Cataract is the clouding of the eye's lens. The exact cause of cataracts is still uncertain but cataracts seem to form as we age. Besides age, other factors might include exposure to ultraviolet light, cigarette smoking, alcohol, and eating habits. According to the National Eye Institutes, "By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery."
Types of eye cataracts
  • Age Related Cataracts - occurs when protein clusters up in the lens and causes cloudiness or from the discoloration of the lens from aging Secondary cataract - forms after surgery from other eye disease like glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy Traumatic cataract - forms after eye injury Congenital cataract - present at birth due to birth defects, diseases, or other problems Radiation cataract - forms after major exposure to radiation
Symptoms and detection of cataracts
Warning signs of cataracts may include blurry vision or glare from car headlights especially at night. Sunlight or indoor overhead lighting may seem to be seem too bright or cause glare. You may notice that bright colors may appear dulled. Sometime cataracts can cause double vision, and you may actually find that you are frequently changing contact or eyeglasses prescriptions. These symptoms might also be signs of other eye related problems so it is best to get checked by your eye doctor if you are having any of these problems. The eye doctor will place drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils and perform a thorough eye exam and study the crystaline lens of your eye as well as to check the optic nerves and retina for changes that might be contributing to your vision complaints. The
