yes no About 200 children a year are born in the UK with opacity of the lens of one or both eyes - a cataract. In most cases the lens will be cloudy enough to prevent clear vision developing and the child will need surgery to have the lens removed. For the child to focus thick glasses or a contact lens will be needed. The strength of these will be regularly changed as the child's eye grows, unlike an artificial lens placed inside the eye, which cannot be altered. In a few cases, if the eye is of normal size, a lens implant can be considered particularly if only one eye is affected. In these cases the child has to wear glasses in addition. If cataract is the only abnormality of the eye and the child is treated within the first few months of life, the prognosis for vision is good. It is expected that the child will attend mainstream school and read, although often will have difficulty with distance vision for the white board. It is most important that children born with cataracts in both eyes have regular eye examinations. In those cases with mild cataract, that does not need a surgical operation, glasses are often needed and the cataract may become denser with time. Children who have had cataract surgery require regular review of their vision development, glasses prescription, a check for glaucoma and examination of their retina.

No Smoking
By Linda Kaspari Cigarette smoking reduces levels of plasma antioxidant, a substance in the blood stream, which protects retinal cells. Smoking causes the protective layer between the retina and blood vessels to erode, resulting in poor circulation, irritation and scarring. Smoking is damaging to the blood supply. Smoking exposes the body to free radicals which causes cellular damage and can cause poor circulation of nutrients to the retina and lens. Carotenoid levels and vitamin C blood concentrations are substantially reduced. Smoking oxidizes cholesterol, causing fat to build up in the arteries. This leads to heart attack, stroke, and probably macular degeneration.
Cataracts
Researchers think smoking contributes to the incidence of some types of cataracts. "What makes us suspect this is the consistency of studies all over the world," says Robert Sperduto, M.D., chief, epidemiology branch of the National Eye Institute. "If there's one thing people can do to improve their general health, including the health of their eyes, it is to stop smoking," says Dr. Sperduto. Carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke creates a hypoxic effect, it is clear that hypoxia will degrade night vision. (Hypoxia is a state of oxygen deficiency in the body which is sufficient to cause an impairment of function. The inadequate oxygen transport or the inability of the tissues to use oxygen causes hypoxia.)

Cataracts are not necessarily a contraindication for refractive surgery , but someone considering corneal refractive surgery such as LASIK PRK LASEK , or Epi-LASIK , may want to forego the corneal refractive surgery and rely on the cataract surgery to correct their refractive error Cataracts are a natural clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye. Since the eye works much like a camera, a cataract, much like a clouded lens, causes blurring or dimming of vision. Many cataract patients complain of poor distance vision, especially while driving. Glare can be especially troublesome while driving at night. Cataracts can also be responsible for double vision or altered color vision. Cataracts do not cause pain, tearing, redness or floaters. Most often cataracts are an inevitable consequence of aging and cannot be prevented. Less common causes of cataracts are trauma, medications, extensive exposure to sunlight, and other eye diseases and heredity. Cataract surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Sedation is often given to alleviate anxiety and pain. Anesthetic is also used to minimize discomfort. A tiny incision is made at the edge of the

Pilots at higher risk of cataracts, study finds
Cosmic radiation may play role in development of eye disorder
CHICAGO - Airline pilots are at higher risk of developing cataracts because of exposure to cosmic rays while aloft, researchers said Monday. Researchers at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik studied 445 men aged 50 or older of whom 79 were pilots and 71 had cataracts, concluding the pilots had triple the risk of developing cataracts. Cataracts, which can be removed surgically, cloud the eye's lens and cause blindness. The type of cataracts studied were the most common, called nuclear cataracts, where the clouding begins in the center of the lens and spreads. "The association between the cosmic radiation exposure of pilots and the risk of nuclear cataracts, adjusted for age, smoking status, and sunbathing habits, indicates that cosmic radiation may be a causative factor in nuclear cataracts among commercial airline pilots," study author Vilhjalmur Rafnsson wrote in the journal, Archives of Ophthalmology. Smoking has been found to raise the risk of cataracts.

Cataracts
Cataracts are the number one cause of poor vision among older adults. Over two-thirds of people over age 60 will have a vision problem due to cataracts. What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens. Located behind the iris and the pupil of the eye, the lens focuses light on the retina in the back of the eye, which in turn allows you to see. The lens of the eye is similar to the lens of a camera. When the camera lens is not working properly you get a blurry photograph. When the lens of the eye becomes cloudy your vision decreases and things appear blurry. What causes cataracts?
It is thought that most cataracts occur due to the natural aging of the body. However, other factors can be involved. Some diseases, such as diabetes or glaucoma, or the use of certain medications, such as steroids, are thought to increase the chance of a cataract occurring. Physical and chemical injury to the eye and exposure to intense heat or radiation are also associated with cataract development. Who can have a cataract?

Non-Age-Related Cataracts Are Treatable With Surgery
More than two-thirds of people over the age of 60 will have a vision problem due to cataracts, so we usually think of the disease as one related to aging. However, cataracts the clouding of the lens inside the eye can strike at any age. The clouding of the lens scatters the light rays and prevents a clear image from being formed. The exact mechanism that causes cataracts is not well known. It is thought that the composition of the lens changes with time and contributes to the development of cataracts. Non-age-related cataracts might be caused by trauma to the eye, use of certain medications such as corticosteroids, exposure to radiation or ultraviolet light, or metabolic disturbances, such as diabetes. In addition, some people are born with cataracts. Chronic use of steroids for such conditions as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis or following organ transplantation can cause cataracts. Prolonged use of topical steroid creams on the eyelids may lead to cataract formation. Both the strength and duration of the steroid medication influence the formation of the cataract. Individuals who receive radiation therapy for cancer treatment or have excessive exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun are also at risk. In addition, diabetics account for a large portion of patients with non-age-related cataracts. The cause of diabetic cataracts is thought to be due to metabolic changes in the lens which occur secondary to hyperglycemia.
