Text size: S M L Health Funding News Laboratories ... Health Information Don't Lose Sight of Cataract Related Topics On this page: What is a cataract? A cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens that causes loss of vision. This brochure is about age-related cataract, the most common type. What causes it? The lens lies behind the iris and the pupil (see diagram). It works much like a camera lens. It focuses light onto the retina at the back of the eye, where an image is recorded. The lens also adjusts the eye's focus, letting us see things clearly both up close and far away. The lens is made of mostly water and protein. The protein is arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear and lets light pass through it. But as we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is a cataract. Over time, the cataract may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see. Researchers suspect that there are several causes of cataract, such as smoking and diabetes. Or, it may be that the protein in the lens just changes from the wear and tear it takes over the years.

Low sunlight exposure can still raise risk of cataracts
A wide-brimmed hat can cut the dose of UV-B by about a third
August 26, 1998
Web posted at: 12:24 a.m. EDT (0424 GMT) From CNN Medical Correspondent Rhonda Rowland ATLANTA (CNN) While it is generally known that spending a lot of time in the sun can lead to cataracts, a new report in the Journal of the American Medical Association has found that even low amounts of sunlight can increase the risk of developing the eye disorder. "I think that's the important message, that there's no safe dose of UV-B," said Sheila West of Johns Hopkins University, where the study was conducted. A cataract develops when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, making vision worse. Specifically, it's the sun's dangerous ultraviolet B or UV-B rays that can help cataracts develop. The study also found that everyone is at equal risk of developing cataracts.

Welcome to the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center's ( SEDAC ) home page for the Stratospheric Ozone and Human Health Project. Stratospheric ozone protects the Earth's surface from high levels of biologically damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is known to be a significant risk factor for skin cancers, eye cataracts, and immune system suppression. Due to the current downward trends in total column ozone at mid- and high-latitudes, the expected increase in UV exposure as a result of this ozone loss may pose a significant health risk in the future. The purpose of this site is to provide data and resources in the areas of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, ozone, and human health impacts of UV exposure for use by researchers, educators, government officials, health providers, students, and the general public.

Cataracts
Cataract Overview
A cataract clouds the lens of the eye, limiting vision. In a normal eye, light passes through the lens to be focused on the retina. The retina is the eye's light-sensitive layer that sends signals to the brain that are interpreted as vision. To produce a sharp image, the lens must remain clear. The lens is made mostly of water and protein. Protein arranges itself to allow light rays to pass through and to focus the rays onto the retina. Sometimes, protein clumps together, clouding small areas of the lens and blocking some light from reaching the retina. This clouding is called a cataract. The rate of cataract progression can be unpredictable. Some cataracts worsen significantly within a few weeks; others remain unchanged for many years. Congenital Cataracts
Summary: Designed to help you understand more about your eye condition, this guide has been written by our experienced eye health team. Congenital Cataracts
What is a Congenital Cataract?
A congenital cataract is an opacity (cloudiness) in the lens of the eye that is present at, or develops shortly after, birth. The human lens is located behind the pupil and has an important function. It focuses rays of light into the retina to allow image formation. As the lens is able to change its shape, it can focus objects at different distances. Its cells are arranged so that it is transparent, like glass or water. When this arrangement is disturbed in any way, the transparency is lost and an opacity results. This results in blurring and blocking of the retinal image. In the case of a newborn infant, a cataract causes the immature visual system to be deprived of the stimulation needed for normal development. If left untreated, permanent visual loss may occur.

Cataracts
What is a cataract?
Cataracts are clouding of the lens portion of the eye. The result is much like smearing grease over the lens of a camera and impairs normal vision. Cataracts will affect most people if they live long enough. This disorder affects 60 percent of people older than 60 and occurs when the normally clear, aspirin-sized lens of the eye starts to become cloudy. impairing vision. Experts estimate that over 1.2 million Americans are diagnosed annually with cataracts that require treatment. As their is are growing numbers of elderly in the United States, the incidence of cataracts is increasing. These persons often want to continue driving cars, reading and traveling-activities for which clear sight is vital. Until recently, anyone who developed cataracts and needed surgery faced a procedure that involved pain and often less than satisfactory results. Until the late 1970s, doctors removed the cloudy lens in a surgical procedure that required a hospital stay of five to seven days. Afterward, the patient had to wear thick "Coke bottle" glasses or contact lenses neither of which could completely restore vision to its previous level.

LASIK Eye Surgery
Medical Editorial Review by: William C. Shiel, Jr., MD, FACP, FACR What is LASIK?
LASIK is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. The eye and vision errors
The cornea is a part of the eye that helps focus light to create an image on the retina. It works in much the same way that the lens of a camera focuses light to create an image on film. The bending and focusing of light is also known as refraction. Usually the shape of the cornea and the eye are not perfect and the image on the retina is out-of-focus (blurred) or distorted. These imperfections in the focusing power of the eye are called refractive errors. There are three primary types of refractive errors:
  • Myopia: persons with myopia, or nearsightedness, have more difficulty seeing distant objects as clearly as near objects.
