cat scratch disease
Cat scratch disease is an infection caused by the bacterium Bartonella henselae It really is transmitted by cat scratches (kittens seem to be worse about it - maybe they just scratch more). It is not contagious from human to human. One theory is that the cats might get it from their fleas, which carry the germ. The germ is found in the mouths of kittens, and presumably is transmitted to the claws during normal preening. It disappears from the mouth as the kitten grows older. The germ is also suspected to be transmitted through flea feces under the claws of cats. Now that new flea treatments make it possible to more or less rid cats of fleas, some infectious disease experts recommend flea treatment - especially if the cat lives with an immunocompromised patient (chemotherapy, HIV infection). The disease starts with the scratch, which heals without incident. Then a tiny sore is noticed at the site of the scratch. This happens from 7-12 days after the scratch. Then from 5 to 50 days after the sore appears, a local lymph node will be noticed to be swollen and perhaps a little tender.

Cat scratch disease
Definition: Cat scratch disease is an infectious illness caused by the bacteria Bartonella , believed to be transmitted by cat scratches, bites, or exposure to cat saliva. This leads to swelling of the lymph nodes ( lymphadenopathy ) near the site of the scratch or bite.
Alternative Names: CSD; Cat scratch fever; Bartonellosis
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Cat scratch disease is caused by Bartonella henselae . The disease is spread through contact with an infected cat, as a result of a cat bite or scratch, or contact with cat saliva on broken skin or the conjunctiva of the eye.
Lymph node swelling
begins about 2 to 3 weeks after exposure and may persist for months. Swelling may occur at the site of the initial infection followed by enlarged lymph nodes along the lymph drainage route from the injury site.

Catscratch disease
What causes catscratch disease and who gets it?
Bartonella henselae is a common infection in young cats. It is passed from cat to cat via fleas. In the absence of fleas, an infected cat cannot pass the infection to uninfected cats. Currently there are no reports of fleas infecting humans directly, but this may explain cases where there has been no history of exposure to cats. People at risk of getting catscratch fever include those:
  • owning a cat younger than 12 months licked, bitten or scratched by an infected kitten petting an infected cat owning at least one kitten or cat with fleas.
The bacteria are present in saliva deposited in cat's fur and claws. It can occur in people of all ages but is most common in children and adolescents. 80% of patients with catscratch disease are less than 21 years old.

CAT SCRATCH DISEASE Cat scratch disease (CSD) is caused by Bartonella henselae, a gram-negative bacterium. As the name suggests, it is carried by cats and is usually associated with catinflicted trauma, e.g., a scratch (in most cases) or a bite. Some 22,000 people reportedly have this disease each year, but its incidence is probably much higher because most cases are, asymptornatic. Clinical CSD in humans typically is characterized by swollen, painful lymph nodes, usually those immediately proximal to the site of inoculation; lowgrade fever, muscle aches, and general malaise are common. In more than 90 per cent of cases the disease is mild and self-limited, and symptoms resolve without treatment within a few weeks to a few months. More severe disease that requires hospitalization does occur. Rarely, B. henselae

Cat Scratch Disease
Cat scratch disease usually occurs in children after being scratched or bitten by a kitten infected with the Bartonella henselae bacteria. A papule or pustule usually develops at the site of the scratch, and then about one to two weeks later, the child's lymph glands become swollen (lymphadenopathy). Other symptoms may include fever, although it is usually mild. Related Topics Lymphadenopathy Atypical presentations of cat scratch disease do occur, but are less common, and may include persistent high fever, conjunctivitis (Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome), encephalitis, and granulomas in the liver and/or spleen. Although sometimes painless, the involved lymph nodes may become tender, red or warm (lymphadenitis) and they may drain spontaneously (suppuration).

Cat illness, dog is sick, behavior problems....Once a week Pets.ca will publish a pet tip. Tip - 21 - Cat scratch disease Cat scratch disease (CSD) affects humans, not cats.
Cat scratch disease is also known as Cat Scratch Fever and benign lymphoreticulosis. Cat scratch disease is a rare disease that occurs when you are scratched (or in rare cases bitten) by a cat (but usually a kitten) that has a specific bacteria on its paws or teeth. The bacteria originates in the cat's saliva. At the site of the scratch you develop a sore or a lesion and the sore may only develop 3-30 days after you have been bitten/scratched. The sore may continue to get larger, take a long time to heal and the lymph glands will get infected usually in the glands closest to where you were scratched (most commonly under the armpit). You may get a fever that lasts for a few days after having being scratched or bitten. As a preventative measure always clean the area where the scratch or bite took place with a disinfectant. In healthy people, cat scratch disease is normally not serious and it will usually clear up on its own without treatment. If you have really painful lymph nodes that won't heal after a couple of weeks or a fever that is taking too long to break, antibiotics can help. Cat scratch disease is extremely dangerous to people with compromised immune systems.

VI. Cats - Health: Cat Scratch Disease
INDEX
Formerly known as cat scratch fever, cat scratch disease was first described in 1950. Since then and up until today, mysteries abound around this disease that can be transmitted from cats to humans. It is estimated that every year about 24,000 people contract cat scratch disease, which is caused by tiny bacteria known as Bartonella henselae. It usually clears up on its own in about 6 to 12 weeks, but the symptoms-including fever, weakness, sore throat, and swollen, painful lymph nodes in the arms, neck and groin-can be unsettling. Felines act as carriers of this pesky pathogen, which has also been found in fleas. Although the evidence is not 100-percent conclusive, these fleas most likely pass the infection on to their feline hosts, who never exhibit any clinical signs of infection. Research suggests that about 40 percent of cats who do become exposed to the bacteria develop immunity to it. The bacteria can be passed on yet again when a cat carrying the bacteria scratches-and breaks the skin of-his human owner. The risk of infection increases if your pet has fleas, and rises even higher if he is still a kitten.

Small, clean and hardy, they make wonderful household companions. Unfortunately, some cats carry an organism called Bartonella henselae, which can cause Cat Scratch Disease. CSD isn't common, but it affects mostly children. Usually the symptoms are mild, but for anyone with a weakened immune system, CSD can be extremely serious. Understanding how CSD is transmitted and recognizing the symptoms will help protect children from contracting it. Five-year-old Andrew loved wrestling with his new kitten, and his mother wasn't surprised to see little hair-line scratches up and down her son's arms they both liked to play rough, and she figured it would teach Andrew to be gentle. What she was surprised to discover however, was that those "learning experiences" put her son at risk of developing Cat Scratch Disease. Caused by a tiny organism called Bartonella henselae, Cat Scratch Disease is a zoonosis: a disease that can be transmitted between humans and animals. In this case, cats infected with Bartonella don't become ill themselves; they simply act as reservoirs for the organism. Researchers believe Bartonella is spread between cats by fleas that jump from cat to cat, inoculating with every bite. Kittens are more susceptible to contracting the organism than adult cats, and owners of kittens infested with fleas are 29 times more likely to develop Cat Scratch Disease than people with flea-free cats.
