MEAT
The Recipe For Prostate Cancer
In the West, prostate cancer is the second largest killer of men after lung cancer. A international study recently conducted by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School showed that men who eat the most meat and dairy products run the greatest risk of dying from the disease. Published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (1998), the report confirmed that men who eat plenty of grains and nuts are the least likely to die from prostate cancer. The study was based on a survey of cancer deaths in 59 countries. It corroborated the results of earlier investigations into the role of a meat-based diet in cardiovascular disease and cancer. A higher intake of cereals, nuts and oil seeds, on the other hand, has a protective effect. Thus the plant-based diets found in many less-advanced societies are the healthiest - as long as people get enough to eat. "For prostate cancer and cancers of other sites that are sensitive to serum (blood) hormone levels, animal fat may influence the risk for cancer by raising adult's sex hormone levels", the report notes. The third-biggest cancer killer in the United States is colon cancer - another thoroughly nasty disease. Colon cancer, too, has been strongly linked with a diet high in animal fat and low in fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products.

New formula may predict prostate cancer relapse risk
May 4, 1999

Web posted at: 1:29 p.m. EDT (1729 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN) Researchers from Johns Hopkins University have developed a formula to calculate the cancer relapse risk for patients who have undergone prostate removal and still have an elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA), according to a study in the May 4 Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland, is used as an indicator of cancer activity. Men without prostates should have no PSA in their blood, unless some prostate cancer cells remain after surgery and are roaming throughout their bodies. Prostatectomy often cures prostate cancer, but sometimes the cancer does return in other parts of the body. When this happens it is called metastatic and is considered incurable. Once men relapse, the median survival is five years. A third of men who have cancerous prostates removed have post-surgical blood tests that suggest the cancer is returning. But tumors may not appear for years. According to the study, it can take a median of eight years from the first elevated PSA test after prostate removal to the development of metastatic cancer.

149. The Oral Cancer Foundation
Oral cancer information and resources for both the public, health care professionalsand care givers.
http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org/
The Oral Cancer Foundation is a national public service, non-profit entity designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy, and support. Oral cancer is the largest category of those cancers which fall into the head and neck cancer category. Common names for it include such things as mouth cancer, tongue cancer, and throat cancer. Each year in the US, approximately 30,000 people are newly diagnosed with oral cancer.
Worldwide the problem is far greater, with new cases annually approaching 300,000. In the US alone, a person dies from oral cancer every hour of every day.
If you add the sub category of laryngeal cancers, the rates of occurrence (about 10,000 additional new cases per year) and death are significantly higher. However, when found early, oral cancers have an 80 to 90 % cure rate. Unfortunately at this time, the majority are found as latter stage cancers, accounting for the very high death rate. This site will provide you with information about the rates of occurrence, risk factors which lead to oral cancer, treatments, current research, and current oral cancer related news.
A patient / survivor forum is open to the public where those currently fighting oral cancer can gain insights and inspiration from those who have been there before them. A comprehensive resource list is also available to link you to other pertinent oral cancer data on the web and elsewhere for patients, caregivers, and the public.

Breast cancer cases rise, cancer deaths decline
Doctors say early screening for cancers has helped to reduce death rates From Rea Blakey CNN (CNN) Cancer deaths particularly those for breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers declined during the 1990s, the National Cancer Institute reports. Doctors said early detection might be saving more lives. From 1995 to 1998, deaths from breast cancer fell 3.4 percent; prostate cancer, 4.5 percent; colorectal cancer, 1.3 percent; and lung cancer, 0.8 percent. However, the number of new breast cancer cases rose 1.2 percent per year, from 1992 to 1998. Mammography and early detection have helped to raise incidence rates, said Brenda Edwards of the National Cancer Institute, the final author of the report. "We think that there may be some changes in both the clinical management, surgical management, looking for nodes and the way they're being diagnosed pathologically that may be helping us find more," Edwards said. The figures come from an annual report that is a collaborative effort by the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

George Harrison's Cancer Relapse
by Josh Grossberg

May 3, 2001, 1:10 PM PT
If all things must pass, it doesn't mean the Quiet Beatle's going without a fight. Representatives for George Harrison announced Thursday that he recently underwent surgery to remove a cancerous growth from one of his lungs. Harrison had the operation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, but did not say when (there's a reason he's known as the Quiet Beatle). a d v e r t i s e m e n t document.write('');
"The operation was successful and George has made an excellent recovery," reads a statement from the rocker's lawyers. "He is in the best of spirits and on top formthe most relaxed and free since the attack on him in 1999. He is now enjoying a holiday in Tuscany. "Although All Things Must Pass Away, George has no plans right now and is still Living in the Material World, and wishes everyone all the very best, God Bless and not to worry." The 58-year-old musician was diagnosed with throat cancer about four years ago after discovering a lump on his neck. In 1997, he was treated with two rounds of radiation therapy at the Royal Marsden Hospital. The reclusive Harrison admitted at the time that he got the disease from his heavy smoking habit.

Cancer pill wins marketing approval
Gleevec received FDA approval Thursday May 10, 2001 Web posted at: 7:52 p.m. EDT (2352 GMT) By Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Unit ROCKVILLE, Maryland (CNN) In what may be one of the fastest drug approvals ever, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Gleevec for the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in patients who have failed standard therapy. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson made the announcement Thursday afternoon, calling drugs like Gleevec "the wave of the future." Gleevec, which was formerly spelled "Glivec" and is also known as STI-571, is a pill that's taken once a day. "When we started studying it in 1998, frankly, it worked much better than we ever anticipated," said David Epstein, president of Novartis Oncology, which manufactures the drug. Cancer pill speeds through testing
In this story: Restoring patients' health 'Fast track' designation RELATED STORIES, SITES By Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Correspondent EAST HANOVER, New Jersey (CNN) It could be one of the fastest drug approvals ever: a pill, called Glivec, that's shown astonishing results in patients with a common form of leukemia. Pharmaceutical company Novartis is filing for marketing approval with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after only three years of study and development. The process usually takes an average of five to seven years. "We believe this is the fastest from first dose in man to filing," said David Epstein, the president of Novartis Oncology. "What the agency has told us is that they view this as a very important new drug, which has benefits that are not seen in current cancer agents and they're going to work with us very closely to review it as fast as possible." Novartis is so optimistic that its plant in Europe is working around the clock to produce supplies of the drug.
