25 August 2005: Growth in cancer incidence to put pressure on health system

Australia would be unable to meet the needs of an unprecedented number of cancer patients unless planning for healthcare reform rapidly gathers pace, The Cancer Council Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Professor Alan Coates, said today.
Professor Coates was responding to an Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) report released today that predicts cancer incidence will rise from 88,398 in 2001 to 115,400 in 2011, an increase of 31 per cent.

Cancer patients across Australia would have improved access to treatment and care if the key recommendations of a Senate inquiry tabled in Parliament today were adopted, according to The Cancer Council Australia and the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia (COSA).
The Cancer Council's Chief Executive Officer, Professor Alan Coates, and COSA President, Dr Stephen Ackland, said implementing many of the recommendations of the

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month - Over two decades of building breast cancer awareness and providing information and hope for future innovations in breast cancer treatment.
2005 marks more than 20 years that National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) has educated women about early breast cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment. This year, NBCAM is again reaching out to women with several key messages, most notably, the importance of early detection through annual mammography screening for women over 40. Mammography screenings are a woman's best chance for detecting breast cancer early. When coupled with new treatment options, mammography screenings can significantly improve a woman's chances of survival.
This web site is for all those who are interested in breast cancer, have friends or family members who are or have been breast cancer patients, who wish to learn more about this disease, or for those who want to build awareness in their communities. Facts About Pediatric Cancer
By the year 2010 it is expected that 1 in every 250 adults will be a survivor of some form of pediatric cancer. Childhood Cancer is still the number one cause of death by disease in children. Brain tumors are now the leading cause of cancer death in children under age 15. Children with leukemia, the most common form of cancer occurring in children, have an 80 percent chance of survival. (Although the statistics for infants and teens are not as encouraging.) While the statistics are improving along with medical technology, we have a long way to go in eradicating this disease. Lend your voice and share your story. You can make a difference. Contact the Lifeline if you are interested in Awareness and Advocacy.

Learn more California Lung Cancer Rates Drop Significantly Article date: In the years following California voters? passage of a major tobacco-control package, lung cancer rates in the state have dropped about five times more than the decline seen in other areas of the country, according to a report released today by scientists at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta (MMWR 2000; Vol. 49, No. 47) Public health experts say California?s success in reducing the staggering public health costs of tobacco use can point the way toward achieving similar results elsewhere. "This shows tobacco control efforts can and do pay off," says Jane Henley, MSPH, an epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society?s (ACS) department of epidemiology and surveillance research in Atlanta. In 1988, California voters passed Proposition 99, a comprehensive effort to reduce damage to public health and lower other costs related to tobacco-caused disease. They elected to raise taxes on tobacco and spend a portion of the income gained on a multi-faceted program designed to reduce consumption of tobacco in the state.

Research may help protect fertility of women in cancer therapy
WASHINGTON (AP) Women having cancer therapy may one day be able to avoid the ovary damage that often leaves them unable to bear children, researchers report. Scientists studying chemical and radiation damage to mice cells report promising results when the action of the chemical ceramide was blocked. But they caution that considerable work is needed before the method could be used in humans.
