Bacteria, Ulcers, and Ostracism?
H. Pylori and the Making of a Myth
Medicine’s purported ostracism of the discovery of H. pylori has achieved a mythological quality. But it isn’t true. After appropriate initial scientific skepticism, the hypothesis was accepted right on schedule.

46. Gastritis Por Campylobacter Pylori -- Monografía Realizada Por Miguel Riveros

Rapid Detection of gastric campylobacter pylori colonization by a simple Media for the culture of campylobacter pylori. Am.J. Gastroenterology, 8479
http://www.quelab.com/htmleng/2171a.html
RAPID UREASE TEST MEDIUM
Technical Data #2171a / 2000.11.01
Rapid Urease Test Medium is used to determine the ability of Helicobacter pylori , formerly C ampylobacter pylori , to split urea rapidly by the action of the enzyme urease. The urea substrate is suspended in a monosodium phosphate buffer, and phenol red serves to indicate the pH change that results from urease activity. H. pylori has recently been established as the etiological agent of chronic Active Antral Gastritis (Type B) and may play a role in gastric and duodenal ulcers. H. pylori has a very high endogenous urease activity that has been used for its identification and differentiation from other organisms such as Proteus species, which are capable of splitting urea, but at a much slower rate.

Bacteria, Ulcers, and Ostracism?
H. pylori and the Making of a Myth
Kimball C. Atwood IV, M.D.
Promoters of "complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)" often state that many practices that are now accepted were once ostracized by the medical mainstream. I respond by challenging them to name a single example, since the era of scientific medicine began in the second half of the nineteenth century, of a correct claim that faced dogmatic, closed-minded rejection by the medical mainstream for any significant amount of time (Atwood 2004). The only example I have been offered is the discovery of the link between peptic ulcer and Helicobactor pylori In 1984, two Australian physicians sugggested that peptic ulcer disease was not caused merely by overproduction of gastric acid, but rather by a specific bacterium: Helicobacter pylori . CAM promoters assert that the Australians were greeted with ridicule, and at least one recent article in a mainstream medical journal has made the same claim (Kaptchuk 2003). But it isn't true. I don't doubt that many physicians scoffed when first faced with the notion of a bacterial basis for peptic ulcer disease (PUD). IHowever, the medical mainstream did dogmatically reject the proposal for an undue period of time. The hypothesis was accepted right on schedule, but only after "appropriate initial skepticism" was satisfactorily answered. Other particulars of the mythical version of the story are also incorrect.

Persons with HIV-infection had been infected by one rare strain of Campylobacter
B. Speed found, that Guillain-Barre Syndrome is about 90 times less likely than Campylobacteriosis Guillain-Barre Syndrome is exclusively connected with one single strain of Campylobacter, namely serotype PEN19:LIO7. This strain makes only 2% of all the Campylobacter strains . Guillain-Barre Syndrome itself is connected with HIV-infection. In Zambia of eight persons with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which were otherwise healthy, six (75%) had in 1987 HIV-antibodies . In Zimbabwe in 1987 of 29 patients with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, otherwise healthy, 16 (55%) had HIV-antibodies. The HIV-seroprevalence at that time in the general population was estimated to be 4.3%. In 1989 five of 16 Guillain-Barre Syndrome-patients, otherwise healthy, had HIV-antibodies. In the USA of 39 persons with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, but otherwise healthy, three had HIV antibodies. In Baltimore two patients with acute Guillain-Barre Syndrome and six with chronic symptoms, all eight otherwise healthy, were found to be HIV-infected.

An aqueous extract of garlic cloves, standardized for its thiosulfinate concentration, was found to inhibit the growth of H. pylori in vitro, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 40 mcg of thiosulfinate per mL.[49] To achieve that concentration of thiosulfinate using fresh garlic would require approximately 5 g garlic (two small cloves) in a 500-mL volume of stomach contents, which is considered a fairly modest dose of garlic. Berberine Berberine, a constituent of herbs such as goldenseal, barberry, and Oregon grape, has broad-spectrum antibiotic activity.[52] In vitro, berberine has been found to inhibit the growth of H. pylori.[53] In a Chinese study, administration of 300 mg berberine three times daily for six weeks resulted in suppression of H. pylori in at least 40 percent of a group of peptic ulcer patients. However, as mentioned previously, H. pylori is relatively easy to suppress, but difficult to eradicate. Additional research is therefore needed to determine what role, if any, berberine has in the treatment of H. pylori infection.

Summary
1 212 patients with ulcerous syndrome who underwent endoscopy of the upper digestive tract and urease test to determine Helicobacter pylori were studied. 1 003 patients (82.75 %) were positive. The commonest diseases found by endoscopy with positive urease test were acute gastritis (100 %), chronic gastroduodenitis (97.75 %), duodenal ulcer (93.8 %) and stomach ulcer (65.16 %). It was proved the importance of searching this bacterium during the performance of endoscopy in all patients with ulcerous symptoms to apply an erradication therapeutics and to prevent its evolution towards more severe forms of lesions with the following loss of working capacity.
