WHAT IS PREPATELLAR (KNEE) BURSITIS? Prepatellar bursitis is an irritation or inflammation of a bursa in your knee. A bursa is a fluid filled sac that acts as a cushion between tendons, bones, and skin. There are several bursae in the knee. The prepatellar bursa is located just in front of the kneecap near the attachment of the kneecap (patellar) tendon. Prepatellar bursitis is also called "housemaid's knee" because housemaids were injured cleaning floors on their knees. The injury is common in wrestlers, who get it from their knees rubbing on the wrestling mats. Volleyball players also get it from diving onto their knees for the ball. HOW DOES IT OCCUR? - overuse - a direct blow to the area - chronic friction, such as from frequent kneeling WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Prepatellar bursitis causes pain and swelling over the front of the knee. You may have pain when you bend or straighten your leg. HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED? Your doctor will examine your knee for tenderness over the bursa. HOW IS IT TREATED?

Olecranon Bursitis
Olecranon bursitis is inflammation and swelling behind the elbow. It often clears on its own. Treatment may be needed in some cases to reduce the inflammation and clear any build up of fluid.
What is the olecranon bursa? The olecranon is the top part of the ulna bone. It is the bony part of the back of the elbow - the bit that you lean on. A bursa is a small sac that contains a small amount of fluid. The fluid is similar to the fluid in joints (synovial fluid). There are several bursae in the body including one just over the olecranon. Bursae help to make movement smooth between bones which 'stick out' and the overlying skin. What is olecranon bursitis? Bursitis means inflammation of a bursa. The bursa at the back of the elbow over the olecranon is the commonest bursa to become inflamed. Inflammation causes swelling and extra fluid to be made. What causes olecranon bursitis?
  • Mild but repeated injury is thought to be the common cause. For example, people who lean on their elbows a lot cause friction and repeated mild injury over the olecranon. (Fancy names have been given to this condition when the cause is clear. For example 'students elbow' when it occurs in people who study with their elbows leaning on a desk. Other names include 'miners elbow', 'plumbers elbow', etc, when the job involves crawling a lot using elbows.)
  • One-off injury such as a blow to the back of the elbow may set off inflammation.

Bursitis
Definition
Bursitis is the painful inflammation of the bursa, a padlike sac found in areas subject to friction. Bursae cushion the movement between the bones, tendons and muscles near the joints. Bursitis is most often caused by repetitive movement and is known by several common names including weaver's bottom, clergyman's knee, and miner's elbow, depending on the affected individual's occupation and area of injury. Description
There are over 150 bursae in the human body. Usually bursae are present from birth, but they may form in response to repeated pressure. Each sac contains a small amount of synovial fluid, a clear liquid that acts as a lubricant. Inflammation causes pain on movement. The most common site for bursitis to occur is the shoulder (subdeltoid), but it also is seen in the elbows (olecranon), hips (trochanteric), knees, heels (Achilles), and toes. The affected area may be referred to as "frozen," because movement is so limited. In the knee there are four bursae, and all can become inflamed with overuse.
The most common cause of bursitis is repeated physical activity, but it can flare up for no known reason. It can also be caused by trauma

Bursitis
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: Bursitis involves the inflammation of the fluid-filled sac (bursa) that lies between tendon and skin and/or between tendon and bone. The conditionn may be acute or chronic
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Bursae are fluid-filled cavities located at tissue sites where tendons or muscles pass over bony prominences near joints. Their function is to aid in movement and reduce friction between moving parts. Bursitis can be caused by chronic overuse, trauma, rheumatoid arthritis gout , or infection. Sometimes the cause cannot be determined. Bursitis commonly occurs in the shoulder, knee (washmaid's knee), elbow, and hip. Other areas that may be affected include the Achilles tendon and the foot. Chronic inflammation can occur with repeated injuries or attacks of bursitis.

Supporting Research Bursitis is an inflammation of a bursa, a small structure inside every joint that helps to lubricate and cushion it. Usually bursitis occurs in the larger joints, such as the shoulder, hip, knee, or elbow. It can happen once or can recur over time. Without seeing your health care provider, you usually can't easily tell the difference between bursitis and pain caused by a strain or arthritis. Signs and Symptoms
  • Pain in the joint that gets worse when you move the joint (the pain may come all at once or develop gradually over time) Swelling Redness Fever and warm joint area (if an infection is present)
What Causes It? Typically the bursa becomes irritated or injured when the area is overused with repetitive motion or strenuous activity. It may also be caused by a bacterial infection. Certain other medical conditions, such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis, can also cause bursitis. What to Expect at Your Provider's Office Your health care provider will ask you to identify exactly where the joint hurts and feel the joint for swelling or particular areas of tenderness. Your health care provider may remove some fluid from the bursa with a small needle to check for signs of infection. You may also be given a blood test to check for other medical conditions.

There are 8 of them around each shoulder, 11 around each knee, and as many as 78 on each side of the body. Most of them aren't even named, and as long as they do their job, there's no reason to ever notice a single one. But let one stop working and you'll know just how important those little sacs of fluid called bursae really are. And you'll know just how painful the condition called bursitis really is. Bursae ensure the smooth, frictionless working of the body's many joints. They are so hard working, inconspicuous, and uncomplaining, one doctor wrote, "that even when one of them misbehaves, this is usually misattributed to some more important structure." And there's no telling when it will happen. Bursitis strikes, it retreats, it strikes again. The on-again, off-again nature of acute bursitis is aggravating for sufferers and frustrating for those trying to determine what type of treatments actually work.

A common condition, bursitis rarely causes serious damage if it is recognized early and treated properly. Bursitis occurs when the bursaesmall sliding pouches that allow parts of the body to move smoothlybecome inflamed. It can happen for a number of reasons. You may simply have bumped your elbow or spent too many hours on your knees in the garden. Or the problem may be caused by infection or gout. The first signs of bursitis are usually pain and swelling. "For example, with bursitis over the elbow, there is often obvious swelling, the flesh is soft, and it feels like there's fluid inside," says Morris B. Use a piece of machinery one too many times, and it just may eventually wear out. While humans are certainly not made of metal, plastic, or rubber, our bones, muscles, and tendons act somewhat like a machine's moving parts. According to the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), the pain associated with tendinitis or bursitis is most often located over a joint, a moving part, and is most frequently caused by overuse. ACR says the two problems are common in both the young and the old, but especially in people who are physically active. Tendinitis ACR defines tendinitis as the inflammation (redness, soreness, and swelling) of a tendon. A tendon attaches muscle to bone. Bursitis Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa. The bursa is the small sac filled with fluid that cushions muscles and tendons, or muscles and bones. Symptoms The symptoms of both bursitis and tendinitis are similar according to ACR. They can include:
    • pain and stiffness that is aggravated with movement
    • pain could be prevalent at night
    • tendon or bursa area around a joint is most often affected

    What is bursitis?
Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa, a small sac of fluid that cushions and lubricates an area where joint-related tissues—including bone, tendon, ligament, muscle, or skin—rub against one another. Bursae (plural of bursa) are located throughout the body, in and on joints and other places that are at risk of rubbing or pressure. Bursitis can occur anywhere in the body where there is a bursa when inflammation causes the bursa to swell with fluid. The condition is often painful. Bursitis can affect anyone, but those who perform repetitive tasks in their jobs, sports, or daily activities are at greater risk. It's likely that some of your daily activities, such as tool use, gardening, cooking, cleaning, and keyboarding, require repetitive movement. Also, continuous pressure or stress on a joint or a certain spot increases your risk of developing bursitis. For example, carpet layers, roofers, or gardeners who work on their knees all day can develop bursitis over the kneecap, and people who sit for long periods on hard surfaces can have bursitis over their seat bones.

    Bursitis What is bursitis?
Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa. A bursa is a tiny fluid-filled sac that functions as a gliding surface to reduce friction between tissues of the body. There are 160 bursae in the body. The major bursae are located adjacent to the tendons near the large joints, such as the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. How does a bursa become inflamed?
A bursa can become inflamed from injury, infection (rare in the shoulder), or underlying rheumatic condition. Examples include injury as subtle as lifting a bag of groceries into the car to inflame the shoulder bursa (shoulder bursitis), infection of the bursa in front of the knee from a knee scraping on asphalt (septic prepatellar bursitis), and inflammation of the elbow bursa from gout crystals (gouty olecranon bursitis). How is bursitis diagnosed?

    Prepatellar bursitis (Housemaid's knee)
Dr Rob Hicks Prepatellar bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa in front of the kneecap. A bursa is fluid-filled sac that is found mainly in joints and that protects bones and tendons from friction.
    In this article
Housemaid's knee What causes it? Reducing your risk
    Housemaid's knee
Bursa is the Greek word for 'a wine skin'. When a bursa becomes inflamed it's known as bursitis. Prepatellar bursitis is commonly called 'housemaid's knee'. The bursa becomes tender and swollen, and movement of the joint may become restricted. If the bursa becomes infected it may become red, hot, and painful.
    What causes it?
Prepatellar bursitis is usually caused by repeated friction between the skin and the patella. It can also be caused by injury, infection, or underlying inflammatory condition. However, often the cause is unknown. The condition occurs in situations where someone is repeatedly on their knees. It used to be characteristic of housemaids who spent a lot of their working day on their knees cleaning - hence the name. Now it's more common among those who have to spend time on their kneees at work, such as carpet fitters.
