PDF Version (Requires Acrobat Reader Burns Mass trauma and disasters such as explosions and fires can cause a variety of serious injuries, including burns. These can include thermal burns, which are caused by contact with flames, hot liquids, hot surfaces, and other sources of high heat as well as chemical burns and electrical burns. It is vital that people understand how to behave safely in mass trauma and fire situations, as well as comprehend basic principles of first aid for burn victims. For burns, immediate care can be lifesaving. Related Materials Note: Most victims of fires die from smoke or toxic gases, not from burns (Hall 2001). This guideline covers burn injuries.
Background Information
  • On average in the United States in 2000, someone died in a fire every 2 hours, and someone was injured every 23 minutes (Karter 2001).

Louis Armstrong
Photo: Herman Leonard J azz , a new documentary by Ken Burns, is a celebration of a unique American art form and of the people that made it. Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie—these are the illustrious names that fill the history of jazz. Burns begins at the beginning—in New Orleans—then traces jazz’ history from Dixieland to Avant-Garde, from the East Coast to the West Coast, from predictable ensembles to totally free improvising. Jazz wants to re-introduce the viewer to this grand, uniquely American art form; it wants to remind the viewer just how special a Charles Mingus is; and it wants to remind the viewer of the contributions and sacrifices that African Americans have made to bring this music to the culture. The story of Jazz is told in ten parts, lasting a total of 19 hours. Each section covers a time period, providing biographies of important figures and covering social developments within that time. Episode 1 titled, "Gumbo," explores the origins of jazz in New Orleans. The most musical of American cities during the 19

Robert " Auld Lang Syne " Burns
Robert was born on 25 January 1759, in Alloway , Scotland, the eldest of seven children. His father, William Burnes , was a gardener/farmer who seemed to have awfully bad business sense. The family lived in poverty until 1766, when William rented a farm. The family then lived in even worse poverty . Robert got very little education, since he so often had to help with the heavy work of farming, but he read a great deal, and that made up for a lot. He wrote his first poem, "O Once I Loved," in 1774, and after that there was no stopping him. Things got financially better for the family in 1777, after they moved to a different farm, and Robert was able to read and write even more. In 1781, Robert went to the nearby town of Irvine and started a business , which was a colossal failure.

Biography
He was born in Alloway Ayrshire Scotland , the son of William Burnes or Burns, a small farmer, and a man of considerable force of character and self-culture. His youth was passed in poverty, hardship, and a degree of severe manual labour which left its traces in a premature stoop and weakened constitution. He had little regular schooling, and got much of what education he had from his father, who taught his children reading, writing, arithmetic, geography, and history, and also wrote for them "A Manual of Christian Belief." With all his ability and character, however, the elder Burns was consistently unfortunate, and migrated with his large family from farm to farm without ever being able to improve his circumstances.

Chemical Eye Burn Overview
Chemical exposure to any part of the eye or eyelid may result in a chemical eye burn. Chemical burns represent 7-10% of eye injuries . About 15-20% of burns to the face involve at least one eye. Although many burns result in only minor discomfort, every chemical exposure or burn should be taken seriously. Permanent damage is possible and can be life-altering.
The severity of a burn depends on what substance caused it and how long the substance had contact with the eye. Damage is usually limited to the front of the eye. The cornea is the very top layer of the eye that is most often affected. Burns that penetrate deeper than the cornea are the most severe.
