Chemical malfunction plays role in bulimia, researchers say
February 14, 1999
Web posted at: 9:49 p.m. EST (0249 GMT) CHICAGO (AP) A new study adds to evidence that the eating disorder bulimia springs at least in part from a chemical malfunction in the brain and not merely from excessive desire to remain thin, researchers say. In the study released Sunday, women who had suffered from bulimia and recovered were more affected psychologically than other women by being deprived of tryptophan, which plays an indirect role in appetite regulation, researchers found. Tryptophan is an amino acid that occurs naturally in many foods and is used by the body to make serotonin, a mood- and appetite-regulating chemical in the brain. Compared with normal women, the recovered bulimics reported bigger dips in mood, greater worries about body image and more fear of losing control of eating after being deprived of dietary tryptophan for about 17 hours, researchers said.

The better known eating disorders
There are many diseases, disorders, and problem conditions involving food, eating, and weight, but in everyday conversation, the term "eating disorders" has come to mean anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating, which are defined on this page. Definitions of lesser-known problems, are on the next page
  • Anorexia nervosa: the relentless pursuit of thinness
    • Person refuses to maintain normal body weight for age and height.
      • Weighs 85% or less than what is expected for age and height.
        • In women, menstrual periods stop. In men levels of sex hormones fall.
          • Young girls do not begin to menstruate at the appropriate age
            • Person denies the dangers of low weight.
              • Is terrified of becoming fat.
                • I s terrified of gaining weight even though s/he is markedly underweight.
                  • Reports feeling fat even when very thin.
                    • In addition, anorexia nervosa often includes depression, irritability, withdrawal, and peculiar behaviors such as compulsive rituals, strange eating habits, and division of foods into "good/safe" and "bad/dangerous" categories. Person may have low tolerance for change and new situations; may fear growing up and assuming adult responsibilities and an adult lifestyle. May be overly engaged with or dependent on parents or family. Dieting may represent avoidance of, or ineffective attempts to cope with, the demands of a new life stage such as adolescence.

What is bulimia nervosa?
Bulimia nervosa, usually referred to as bulimia, is defined as uncontrolled episodes of overeating (binge eating) in addition to purging through misuse of laxatives, enemas, medications that cause increased production of urine, self-induced vomiting, fasting, or excessive exercise. Binge eating, in this situation, is defined as eating much larger amounts of food than would normally be consumed within a short period of time (usually less than two hours). Eating binges occur at least twice a week for three months and may occur as often as several times a day.
What causes bulimia?
The cause of bulimia is not known. Factors believed to contribute to the development of bulimia include cultural ideals and social attitudes toward body appearance, self-valuation based on body weight and shape, and family problems. People who develop bulimia are more likely to come from families with a history of eating disorders and other mental health problems, such as mood disorders or substance abuse. Mood disorders and substance abuse are also commonly found in teens with bulimia nervosa.

bulimia is compulsive eating, an addictive disorder, triggered by foods and alcohol.

Home Modular Nutrition Logon Alpha Health Education Nutritional Rescue Topics from the Book of Eating and Weight Management Table of Contents Rescue Starter Pack More on Addictive Foods ... Weight Management We think of binge eating and bulimia as parts of a curious and biologically perverse puzzle - the craving for and the compulsive eating of foods that cause illness and obvious suffering. Cravings may be interpreted as urges to find missing nutrients, but the foods found in compulsive searches are not biologically correct. Instead, food cravings are a symptom of an addictive loop. Among our patients, there is a consensus that eating-control is difficult to achieve, even when wrong food choices involve risk of serious illness. The consensus is also that some foods trigger compulsive eating, uncontrollable by ordinary acts of consciousness. We compare binge eating with binge drinking and find many similarities. The Solution
  • Treat compulsive eating as an addiction.

About this leaflet This leaflet is for anyone who has anorexia or bulimia, or who feels that their eating or dieting is getting out of control. It should also be helpful for anyone with a friend or relative, son or daughter, who is having a problem of this sort. It does not deal with the problems of being overweight. Introduction
We all eat differently. Some of us eat more, some of us eat less. Some of us put on weight easily, some of us do not. However, if we have an eating disorder, we damage our health by:
  • eating too much eating too little using harmful ways to get rid of calories.
This leaflet deals with two eating disorders - anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Who gets eating disorders? Girls and women are 10 times more likely than boys and men to suffer from anorexia or bulimia. Boys and men do, though, seem to be getting eating disorders more often Symptoms People with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa share an intense fear of becoming fat. If you have an eating disorder, your symptoms may not fit neatly into the description either of anorexia or of bulimia.

More than 90 percent of those afflicted are adolescent and young adult women. It is suggested that the reason women in this age group are particularly vulnerable to eating disorders is because of their tendency to go on strict diets to achieve an "ideal" figure. Researchers have found that such stringent dieting can play a key role in triggering eating disorders. The consequences of eating disorders can be severe - one in ten cases of anorexia nervosa leads to death from starvation, cardiac arrest, other medical complications, or suicide.
