What is anorexia nervosa?
Anorexia nervosa is an illness that usually occurs in teenage girls, but it can also occur in teenage boys, and adult women and men. People with anorexia are obsessed with being thin. They lose a lot of weight and are terrified of gaining weight. They believe they are fat even though they are very thin. Anorexia isn't just a problem with food or weight. It's an attempt to use food and weight to deal with emotional problems. Return to top
What is the difference between anorexia and bulimia?
People with anorexia starve themselves, avoid high-calorie foods and exercise constantly. People with bulimia eat huge amounts of food, but they throw up soon after eating, or take laxatives or diuretics (water pills) to keep from gaining weight. People with bulimia don't usually lose as much weight as people with anorexia. Return to top

Bulimia nervosa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Bulimia Bulimia nervosa Bulimia nervosa , an eating disorder more commonly known as bulimia , is a psychological condition in which the subject engages in recurrent binge eating followed by intentionally doing one or more of the following in order to compensate for the intake of the food and prevent weight gain: A person is classified as having bulimia when he or she feels incapable of controlling the urge to binge, even during the binge itself, when he or she consumes a larger amount of food than a person would normally consume at one sitting, and when such behavior occurs at least twice per week for three months. Bulimia is a pathology that sometimes involves body image and the desperate desire to appear thin. The majority of bulimic patients are young females from 10 to 25 years old, although the disorder can occur in people of all ages and both sexes. Bulimia is often less about food, and more to do with deep psychological issues and profound feelings of lack of control. Binge/purge episodes can be severe, sometimes involving rapid and out of control feeding that stops when the sufferers "are interrupted by another person . . . or [when] their stomach hurts from over-extension . . . This cycle may be repeated several times a week or, in serious cases, several times a day."

The lost lesson of Terri Schiavo
By GARY D. FOX Published October 26, 2003 In November 1992, a jury in Clearwater returned a verdict in favor of Terri and Michael Schiavo for more than $6.8-million. The jury found that Terri had been the victim of substandard medical care that caused, in part, her coma. The jury also found that Terri was partly at fault and the verdict was reduced accordingly, to about $2-million. I was the lead trial lawyer for Terri and Michael. I have followed from afar the saga of the Schiavo family since the trial. The battles over whether to disconnect Terri's life support have been extensively covered in the media. What has not been widely reported is the cause of Terri's coma. By all accounts, Terri was a fine young woman. She had a good job, a good marriage and many friends. Most who knew Terri, however, were unaware that she was sick. Terri suffered from an eating disorder known as bulimia nervosa, commonly called bulimia. The disease causes its victims to overeat ("binge") and soon thereafter vomit ("purge"). The cycle of binging and purging is extremely dangerous. The human heart, to work properly, requires a balance of the body's electrolytes. Vomiting can upset the electrolyte balance and cause abnormal heart rhythms that can lead to heart attack. That is what happened to Terri. One night, Terri purged, which caused her potassium level to drop low enough to cause a heart attack. Before fire rescue arrived and took her to the hospital, Terri's brain had been deprived of oxygen for long enough to produce catastrophic brain damage.

    Eating Disorders Awareness: Bulimia Nervosa
    ED-1003-2001
Deborah L. Angell There are two types of bulimia nervosa, purging type and non-purging type. The common behaviors of the purging type include the use of self-induced vomiting, laxatives, and diuretics. Non-purging bulimics use other compensatory behaviors including fasting and excessive exercise to prevent weight gain. The causes of bulimia nervosa are unclear. It is known that pressure to conform to a cultural ideal of thinness influences abnormal dieting behavior and low self-esteem can result from being unable to achieve this ideal. The self-image of a person with bulimia nervosa is closely connected to their weight and they pay a great deal of attention to how they look. The beginning of bulimia nervosa often follows dieting behaviors that begin during adolescence. Very low calorie diets often promote binge eating due to being deprived of not only fuel but pleasurable foods. This is followed by intense feelings of guilt for losing control of eating. Guilt may be accompanied by mood swings and is relieved by purging the calories from the body. When this behavior is repeated, a cycle of binging and purging begins. Times of emotional stress can worsen the binge/purge cycle. This cycle can occur occasionally or several times a day. As bulimia nervosa progresses, a person adjusts their lifestyle to accommodate their behaviors. A person with bulimia nervosa will become very secretive about eating to protect their habit. These lifestyle changes cause feelings of isolation, self-deprecating thoughts, depression, and continued decline of self-esteem. A person with bulimia nervosa realizes they are engaging in abnormal behavior. In fact, they spend a great deal of time planning and carrying out binge/purge behaviors in secret so others are unaware. This is unlike anorexics who are often unaware of their disorder.

    Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia Nervosa is a disorder where the main characteristics are binge eating and compensatory behaviors in order to prevent weight gain. Bulimics are caught in the devastating and addictive binge-purge cycle. For individuals suffering from Bulimia Nervosa, the binge can be seen as a reward within itself and a way to cope with daily stresses and feelings. Bulimic binges usually consist of a larger than normal quantity of food, that typically are high in caloric intake. For individuals with Bulimia Nervosa, the binge eating usually occurs in secrecy and rarely in the presence of others. The types of food vary but are often sweet and/or high in fat content. Some binges are planned in advance by the Bulimic, but generally they are impulsive. Triggers for binges in Bulimia Nervosa include dysphoric mood, interpersonal stressors, boredom, prolonged dieting, and body image dissatisfaction. The binge eating in Bulimia Nervosa may temporarily numb the negative feelings, but this state is quickly followed by feelings of failure. The Bulimic is often ashamed of their binges and views the Bulimic behavior as a loss of control and a reason for low self-esteem. This is why it is often hard for Bulimics to come forward and seek help.
