Introducing Bulimia Nervosa Dr Peter Rowan MBBS.MRCPsych.
General Description
Signs that may indicate that there is a problem include a tendency to leave the table immediately after a meal. Vomiting is most frequently induced by forcing two fingers of the right hand down the throat. This often causes a chronic blister just below the knuckle where it rubs on the upper teeth. Repeated vomiting quite often leads to swelling of the salivary glands that show as soft swellings at the base of the ears or just under the chin. If it goes on for many years the swellings become hard and permanent. Three Types of Bulimia
Bulimia Nervosa is best considered as three separate illnesses that share the essential features described above. They will be discussed below under three different headings; Simple, Anorexic, and Multi-impulsive Bulimia Nervosa. There is quite a lot of overlap between them so that there are a number of sufferers who show characteristics that belong midway between these subgroups. Simple Bulimia Nervosa Anorexic Bulimia Nervosa Multi-impulsive Bulimia Nervosa Causes of Bulimia Nervosa
Once the illness has become established the trigger to binge is often partly or wholly related to feelings. Periods of depression, boredom, and anger are likely to increase the risk especially when the sufferer is alone. It is a habit forming behaviour and some girls plan being alone and having food available in order to make bulimia easier. They can become addicted to the emotional feelings that are generated in this way.

Bulimia
I do not have a question but rather a personal story to share. I myself have dealt with bulimia for several years. I want to let your readers know they are not alone! For me, my eating disorder began when I was approximately 15 years old. I am now 23. I want to let those who are struggling with an eating disorder know that it is possible to over come bulimia and/or anorexia. I myself have not entirely beaten this disease but I'm more than half way there. There is an end to all the craziness, trust me, but it takes a lot of time, work, effort and the will to get better. You have to take each day at a time and you have to keep focused. I had to quit university, the year I was to graduate and believe me it was the toughest decision for me to make. I chose to delay my graduation in order to join group therapy in my hometown. I think back to this day how grateful I am that I made that decision and how grateful I am to have had such supportive friends and family members. When it comes down to it people are very caring and understanding when you come to them for help. I would like to offer my help in any way possible in order to help others beat their eating disorders. I found that one of the best solutions is talking. Many bulimics out there feel like there is nowhere to turn or maybe they feel like they will be looked down. I'm still glad to see that there is somewhere to find help. Having an eating disorders are not a very easy thing to admit and I'm very glad to see that there are individuals strong enough to come forth with their problem. I know in my case that if it was not for my five roommates God knows where I would be now.

Tired of suffering?
It's time for change.
Hi. My name is MaRisa, now into my late thirties...healed over 10+ years.
These are my children below... aren't they beautiful? My husband is too!
Never would I of believed it possible, to have children... to be normal and have a family after all the damage bulimia anorexia eating disorders did.
It's been over 10 yrs now that I'm totally free. Hard to believe huh? Ah-huh. You see, with God all things are possible.
For the ten yrs I practiced this horrible eating disorder bulimia that controlled my life and almost took it at the same time... I knew Jesus but I was so set on finding myself in a world of vain images and seductive appetites, I started at age 14. The vomiting, the binges, bulemia the secret sin that nobody knew until it was too late.
What to do. If Jesus could heal, why didn't he me? I asked Him so many times to take this monster out from within.
The journey I had to go on was worth the lessons I learned about God, healing and recovery. GOD's healing is permanent. All Things Are Possible with God. Free of bulemia because of Jesus, His Healing is FREE. By His Power of Grace and Mercy we are saved, set free made whole. Rev.12:11

    What is Bulimia?
    Bulimia, also called bulimia nervosa, is a psychological eating disorder. Bulimia is characterized by episodes of binge-eating followed by inappropriate methods of weight control (purging). Inappropriate methods of weight control include vomiting, fasting, enemas, excessive use of laxatives and diuretics, or compulsive exercising. Excessive shape and weight concerns are also characteristics of bulimia. A binge is an episode where an individual eats a much larger amount of food than most people would in a similar situation. Binge eating is not a response to intense hunger. It is usually a response to depression, stress, or self esteem issues. During the binge episode, the individual experiences a loss of control. However, the sense of a loss of control is also followed by a short-lived calmness. The calmness is often followed by self-loathing. The cycle of overeating and purging usually becomes an obsession and is repeated often. Bulimia was only diagnosed as its own eating disorder in the 1980s People with bulimia can look perfectly normal. Most of them are of normal weight, and some may be overweight. Women with bulimia tend to be high achievers.

    Diagnostic Guidelines
    For a definite diagnosis, all the following are required: (a) There is a persistent preoccupation with eating, and an irresistible craving for food; the patient succumbs to episodes of overeating in which large amounts of food are consumed in short periods of time.
    (b) The patient attempts to counteract the "fattening" effects of food by one or more of the following: self-induced vomiting; purgative abuse, alternating periods of starvation; use of drugs such as appetite suppressants, thyroid preparations or diuretics. When bulimia occurs in diabetic patients they may choose to neglect their insulin treatment.
    (c) The psychopathology consists of a morbid dread of fatness and the patient sets herself or himself a sharply defined weight threshold, well below the premorbid weight that constitutes the optimum or healthy weight in the opinion of the physician. There is often, but not always, a history of an earlier episode of anorexia nervosa, the interval between the two disorders ranging from a few months to several years. This earlier episode may have been fully expressed, or may have assumed a minor cryptic form with a moderate loss of weight and/or a transient phase of amenorrhoea. Includes:
    * bulimia NOS
    * hyperorexia nervosa Differential diagnosis.

    What is bulimia?
    Bulimia (buh-LEE -me-ah) nervosa, typically called bulimia, is a type of eating disorder. Someone with bulimia eats a lot of food in a short amount of time (called bingeing) and then tries to prevent weight gain by purging. Purging might be done in these ways:
    • making oneself throw up taking laxatives, pills, or liquids that increase how fast food moves through your body and leads to a bowel movement (BM)
    A person with bulimia may also use these ways to prevent weight gain:
    • exercising a lot eating very little or not at all taking pills to pass urine
    What causes it?
    Bulimia is more than just a problem with food. Purging and other behaviors to prevent weight gain are ways for people with bulimia to feel more in control of their lives and ease stress and anxiety. While there is no single known cause of bulimia, many things may have a role in its development:
    • Biology.
