Post subject: Bulging Disk Problem OSUMatt - Thu Jul 15, 2004 5:26 pm I got out of the military 4 years ago. My leg was hurting me for about 2 years after that so I finally got an MRI. The MRI found I had a bulging disk between the L4 and L5. Now this pain is still with me, but has not gotten any worse. It is a mild pain, one that I can easly live with. I am however trying to get back into the military and I will need the bulging disk to go away. Is this possible? I tried PT once, did it 4 sessions, but never actually followed it, so I would say I have never done any thing to help the problem.

Post subject: Bulging disk sabrinasoldan - Wed Jan 26, 2005 12:01 am I have a bulging disk between L1 and L2 and have been doing some research online to see what kind of treatments there are for a bulging disk, as I have tried just about everything. I have had cortizone injections, been to physical therapy, had back adjustments, have been on muscle relaxants, pain killers, and steroids. Well a couple things confuse me. First my MRI report said there is no (not sure what the word is)...something about my nerves and that the bulging disk is not affecting my nerves. However from time to time my right half of my butt and my my right leg go numb. It doesn't happen very often, but it does happen.

Q:
1 1/2 years ago I had a CT scan that should I had a Bulging disk in L5. The treatment was a series of epidural blocks which did releive my pain. Now, 1 1/2 years later I have had major back pain again, and have been treated by my Chiropractor, who refered me to my MD because she suspected a disk problem. I had an MRI done which shows I now have a Herniated Disk in L5S1. 2 questions: What is the difference, if any, between a Bulging disk, and a Herniated Disk? Should epidoral blocks take care of the pain again? I am only 31 years old, I enjoy many sports and activities. I have a major problem with having to deal with this pain, or the fear if I do anything wrong it will come back, for the rest of my life-what are your thoughts on my options? Brenda
A:
Herniated disc is a general terms. Within this caterogy, there are four specific terms which describe the anatomy of the herniated disc: bulging, prolapsed, extruded, and sequestered. A bulging disc is a slight bulging of the disc beyond the vertebral disc margin.. The annulus fibrosis (AF) is intact.

Q:
My wife( she is 27 years old) , had a car accident two months ago. After the accident she had the following symptoms: 1. numbness of the left arm.2.tingling feeling.3.weakness.4.pain.She has been taking pain killers since the accident, but the pain won't go away. She had an MRI 3 weeks ago and they found.1.Arthritis in the neck.2. Bulging disk C4/C5and C5/C6. The doctor told her that she is NOT supposed to have pain and the symptoms above. Is that true? What options does she have for her symptoms to improve? She's left handed and she has lost ability to write and other simple everyday activities. She also has similiar symptoms in her lower left leg (from toes to knee). Her doctor pays no attention to lower leg symptoms. Can you please give me your opinion , suggestions and potential treatment for a good recovery. Thank you in advance....we really appretiate your help. alex
A:
Herniated discs can give all the symptoms above. The dilemma is that 30% of people who have no symptoms can have MRIs that show herniated discs as well. The most important thing is to have a complete and thorough examination to make sure that there is no neurologic deficits. You can also have an electromyography (EMG) to make sure there is no continuing nerve damage. Treatment includes a closely monitored rehab program, epidural injections (risky in the neck region), and surgery. Up to 90% of herniated discs without evidence of myelopathy can be managed conservatively with good outcome. A physiatrist with spine expertise is well suited to manage cases like this.

I have been diagnosed with bulging disks in my thoracic spine. The bulges begin at T5 and continue through T10. I have tried every possible treatment including dozens of medications, epidural injections (3 times), and physical therapy. - none have worked.
CCF Neuro[P] MD, RPS
Tim Richardson Dear Tim:
Without seeing the MRI it is difficult to tell you much. If there is compromise of the spinal cord, then things are clearer on what to do. However, the epidural injection had no effect suggesting that this may not be the case. Surgery for strictly pain without a mechanical reason (grossly degenerative vertebrae, etc) is a crap shoot for pain relief. I would make sure you get at least 2 opinions before undergoing the knife.
Sincerely

From To Post jo-ann
Dear Doctors,
I am 2 years post C5-6 anterior decompression and fusion. New
surgeon has recently explained to me that it didn't heal correctly and the pin is loose. I also have at C3-4 a large central herniation and to the right with compression against the c-4 root. At c 4-5 I have a diffuse bulging disc compromising the left forament. I have spurring also at C5-6 and at C6-7 a large central and to the right herniation. Recently i have been
told also that i have lumbar problems too-mri next week. My questions are:
Sometimes i cannot lift left leg and have pain and tingling in feet, is that from lumbar or cervical spine. This past week I'm
experiencing new pain in both legs (more in right) sharp pain raditating down legs and then they give out. Also i am curious about what pain is caused by which herniations. For example my upper back, neck area gets completely numb and i have a searing pain on left back neck area..which herniation causes that? Also
pain in arms and left hand (two middle fingers). I have other pain also.but can you give an idea of what symptoms correspond with herniations.
