We now have over 1,000 members and send over 500 newsletters. Initially we sent with the newsletter a list of people willing to be contacted so that new members and anybody wanting a chat could look in the list and find somebody geographically near them. However, the list got so long we couldn’t afford the postage or printing. So it was suggested that we divide the country into areas (see map). A kind volunteer from each region has agreed to be the contact person (CP). If you are willing to be contacted could you phone the CP responsible for your area and let them know. The CP will keep details of your name, phone number, the town where you live and the illness, which concerns you most. Then as people wish to talk they will phone the CP who will put them in contact with somebody nearby.

I reported aboard the USS BURTON ISLAND AGB-1 at Long Beach California,in February of 1955.I was aboard until November 29th 1956. I made two Northern Cruises during that period of time.
Lots of ice all around us.But that is what she was built for.
The Burton Island was launched April 30th 1946,designated AG-88 and commissioned December 28th 1946. Her first skipper was CDR G KETCHUM.Her first cruise was a southern cruise to ANTARCTICA,for the first ANTARCTIC Development Project in 1947. She steamed through the ice pack to the Bay Of Whales to unload supplies, and received passengers for the return voyage to San Pedro,California. Between April 1948 and December 1956 she participated in nineteen different cruises in Arctic and Alaskan waters. She was designated AGB-1 in March of 1949.In December 1966 was transferred from the US Navy to the US COAST GUARD, and designated WAGB_283.
This is how she looked after her new designation as a COAST GUARD ICE BREAKER.

      Vasospastic disorders
Vasomotor disorders is an umbrella term comprising a number of pathologies that involve localised vessel spasm or change, affecting blood supply and return to an area (Kidawa, 1992). Reviewing the microvascular anatomy, the arterioles and venules possess higher concentrations of spirally orientated smooth muscle cells than the larger vessels, allowing constriction and dilation of the vessels. Just prior to the arteriole-capillary junction, the last smooth muscle cell is called the pre-capillary sphincter, and is capable of completely obstructing supply to its capillary bed (Kidawa, 1992; Marieb, 1998). Vasomotor control is be regulated by either a-receptor neural stimulation, myogenic regulation of blood pressure, and metabolic reaction to local metabolic conditions (Kidawa, 1992). The stimulus for change originates in the medulla, and passes through the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system to the smooth muscle cells, contricting these cells and hence decreasing luminal size and blood flow (Kidawa, 1992; Marieb, 1998).
Vasospasticity may be caused by various stimuli:
The most common condition podiatrists will encounter is Raynauds syndrome. Raynauds syndrome can be defined as episodic vasoconstriction of the small digital arteries with exposure to cold (Cotran, 1999). The disorder may be classified into two types:

    54. Medical On Line
Two specific but rare diseases are also important. buergers disease is seen onlyin men who are heavy smokers and are aged between 20 and 40.
    http://www.medicalonline.com.au/wwwroot/medical/disease_index/general/poorcirc.h
Poor circulation occurs when the flow of blood through a part of the body is impaired. It can occur because of a gradual narrowing of an artery which may be associated with diabetes mellitus, raised blood pressure, raised blood levels of cholesterol and smoking. Blood clots can dramatically block off the circulation of blood in an artery. Sudden narrowing or spasm of blood vessels which interferes with circulation can be caused by certain drugs, exposure to cold and smoking. The commonest of poor circulation is atherosclerosis . This narrowing of the arteries is aggravated by smoking, the level of blood cholesterol and by high blood pressure. In the past the usual approach to poor circulation in the legs was to get people to stop smoking and then to operate on their arteries. It is possible to put plastic tube with a balloon attached into the narrowed artery, stretch it and then remove the tube and the balloon - this is called an angioplasty There is also increasing evidence that atherosclerosis is reversible. If in addition to stopping smoking, blood pressure is controlled and blood cholesterol lowered to 5.5 MMOL/L
