At least eight people have died from an outbreak of bubonic plague in northwestern China but authorities said the disease has been brought under control, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The bubonic plague bacteria taken from a patient. [AFP] Nineteen cases were reported in four counties in Qinghai province this month and 11 people had recovered, the report said. "Most of the patients were agricultural farmers, apart from one case in Nangqian county which needed further investigation, the rest were infected after hunting or eating marmots (a burrowing rodent)," it added. The plague outbreak was controlled after local health authorities took swift measures to contain the disease, Qinghai health department was quoted as saying. "Bubonic plague does occur in China and many other parts of the world from time to time," said World Health Organisation (WHO) spokesman Roy Wadia. Wadia said as long as authorities identify the disease at an early stage and take prompt measures to stop the spread, the disease should come under control relatively quickly.

    Introduction
The writer Petrarch, in speaking of the devastation of Florence by the bubonic plague in the 1300’s, perhaps says it best: “O happy posterity, who will not experience such abysmal woe and will look upon our testimony as fable.” It is true that the world today has forgotten what a pandemic with 40% mortality is like. Through most of history, the bubonic plague would appear with unknown causes and no known cure or treatment. It inspired panic and terror, destroyed economies, and lead to social upheavals. Its history is long and varied, continuing up to the present day.
    Ancient Roots
It is difficult to say what is the earliest recorded outbreak of the bubonic plague. Some scholars believe that the first two outbreaks are reported in the Bible. In one, reported in the book of 1

Definition: Plague is an infection caused by the organism Yersinia pestis . It is carried by wild rodents and transmitted to humans.
Alternative Names: Bubonic plague; Pneumonic plague; Septicemic plague
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Plague is transmitted among rodents and to humans by flea bite or ingestion of the feces of fleas . It can also be transmitted from human to human when a plague victim develops pneumonia and spreads infected droplets by coughing . An epidemic may be started this way. Plague is rare in the United States, but areas where the disease is known to occur include parts of California, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. There are two types of plague, bubonic and pneumonic. The incubation period is 2 to 10 days but may be as short as a few hours for pneumonic plague.
Risk factors for plague include a recent flea bite; and occupational or environmental exposure to rodents (especially rabbits, squirrels, or prairie dogs; or scratches or bites from infected domestic cats).

    Bubonic Plague: Yesterday's Scourgeand Tomorrow's?

When you think of bubonic plague, no doubt you think of the Black Death, the scourge of medieval Europe. What you probably don't realize is that since the start of the twentieth century, North America has been the world's largest reservoir of infection for bubonic plague and that every year in this country people are infected with the plague and some die of it.
What you also may not realize is that the antibiotics used to treat plague are not as effective as they once were, and that eventually, perhaps in the not too distant future, they will lose their efficacy altogether. When that happens, we will see a worldwide pandemic that will vastly overshadow the Black Death pandemic that depopulated Europe during the Middle Ages.
The organism responsible for bubonic plague is Pasteurella pestis (also called Y ersinia pestis ), which is spread by rodents and transmitted to man by fleas parasitic on rodents.
The disease gets its name from one of its most characteristic signs, a painful swelling of the lymph nodes in the groin area. The Greek word for groin ( boubon
Lymph nodes in other parts of the body can also swell from the infection, but the groin area is most often involved because it is easy for an infected flea to reach and bite the legs, so the lymph nodes in the groin provide the most convenient site for

PLAGUE SUMMARY Signs and Symptoms: Pneumonic plague incubates 2-3 days. High fever, chills, headache, hemoptysis, and toxemia, progressing rapidly to dyspnea, stridor, and cyanosis. Death from respiratory failure, circulatory collapse, and a bleeding diathesis. Bubonic plague incubates 2-10 days. Malaise, high fever, and tender lymph nodes (buboes); may progress spontaneously to the septicemic form, with spread to the CNS, lungs, etc. Diagnosis: Presumptive diagnosis can be made by Gram or Wayson stain of lymph node aspirates, sputum, or CSF. Plague bacilli may also be cultured on standard media. Treatment: Early administration of antibiotics is very effective. Supportive therapy is required. Prophylaxis: A licensed, killed vaccine is available. Primary series of an initial dose followed by a second smaller dose 1-3 months later, and a third dose 5-6 months after the second dose. Give 3 booster doses at 6 month intervals following dose 3 of the primary series then every 1-2 years. This vaccine is effective against bubonic plague, but probably not against aerosol exposure. Isolation and Decontamination: Standard Precautions for healthcare workers exposed to bubonic plague. Droplet Precautions for healthcare workers exposed to pneumonic plague. Heat, disinfectants (2-5% hypochlorite) and exposure to sunlight renders bacteria harmless.

    Health Department Issues Warning
POSTED: 11:36 am MDT May 12, 2005 MORRISON, Colo. A rabbit with bubonic plague has been found in the Morrison area, prompting health officials to issue a warning. The animal was found near the east entrance to Mount Falcon Park the same area in which several domestic cats tested positive for plague in 2004, health officials said Thursday. The Jefferson County Department of Health and Environment posted signs to remind citizens to take precautions to prevent exposure. "Rodents, such as rabbits and prairie dogs, as well as cats are especially susceptible to plague, and this is the beginning of the 2005 plague season," said Dr. Jim Dale, the director of Environmental Health Services for the county. "It is important for the public to follow precautions to prevent exposure to plague." Bubonic plague is transmitted through fleas that have bitten plague-infected animals. Humans can be infected with plague through bites from infected fleas, by the cough from an infected animal, or by direct contact with blood or tissues of infected animals.

Abstract T hroughout the Middle Ages most of populated Britain suffered sweeping ravages of disease and pestilence; individually and collectively these epidemics were referred to as the plague. Examination of the Leicestershire town of Loughborough's Parish Register , reveals valuable statistical data, particularly in respect to burials after 1538. The History and Antiquities of the County of Leicester, Vol III part II, by J Nichols , offers an insight into some of the social effects of the plague. Using these and other sources, an attempt to investigate the local myths and legends has been undertaken. Furthermore, other issues, such as what was the Plague and how it did spread, are addressed.
