broader: Respiratory Tract Infections other: Common Cold Influenza Laryngitis Pharyngitis ... Whooping Cough narrower: Bronchiolitis Bronchitis A patient information document (written for the University of Illinois students by the McKinley Health Center), about bronchitis, which is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes. It provides details of acute and chronic bronchitis, the effects of smoking, early detection of tissue damage etc. Published by the McKinley Health Center, University of Illinois. Patient Education Bronchitis Acute bronchitis One in a series of fact sheets produced by the Lung and Asthma Information Agency (LAIA), an academic unit in the Department of Public Health Sciences at St George's Hospital Medical School. This fact sheet provides information on acute bronchitis, and covers time trends, seasonal variations, and a comparison with asthma. The fact sheet was prepared by Dr Andy Ross and Dr Douglas Flemming of the Royal College of General Practioners Research Unit, Birmingham. Available in PDF, which requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Bronchitis Prodigy guidance : chest infections This clinical guidance on the management of acute bronchitis, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, community-acquired pneumonia, and chest infection is produced and made available by Prodigy. Prodigy is a project that aims to support GPs during a patient consultation, and is funded by the Department of Health (DoH) and developed by the Sowerby Centre for Health Informatics at Newcastle (SCHIN). This guidance was last revised in October 2001, with minor amendments in October 2003.

In some cases the cough may remain dry and if the airway is blocked the person may feel short of breath. There may also be wheezing after the bouts of coughing and if not properly treated pneumonia may develop. Another type of bronchitis, irritative bronchitis, is known to be caused by different types of dust, fumes for caustic materials such as strong acids, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, bromine, tobacco smoke or other smoke, ammonia, sulphur dioxide, various organic solvents and nitrogen dioxide. A doctor will make a diagnosis of bronchitis on the basis of a persons symptoms and the appearance of the materials being coughed up. If the symptoms are severe or they persist a doctor may take a chest x-ray to be sure the patient does not have pneumonia. Acute bronchitis which comes on suddenly and is of short duration, as well as, chronic bronchitis which persist over a long period and tends to reoccur for several years, are common in people who smoke and in areas where atmospheric pollution is high. The bronchi are the airways that connect the trachea or windpipe to the lungs. In cases of acute bronchitis the condition is usually a complication of a viral infection such as the flu or a cold. Most often attacks of acute bronchitis will occur during the winter months. People with lung disease, babies and the elderly are most susceptible to this type of bronchitis. This condition is considered to be chronic bronchitis when sputum has been coughed up almost daily for three consecutive months in a two year period. In most cases this is the result of a wide spread narrowing and obstruction of the air ways in the lungs.

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the deep inner lung passages called the bronchial tree. Bronchitis may be either acute or chronic. Acute bronchitis is frequently caused by a viral or bacterial infection . Acute bronchitis may also result from irritation of the mucous membranes by environmental fumes, acids, solvents, or tobacco smoke. Bronchitis usually begins with a dry, nonproductive cough. After a few hours or days, the cough may become more frequent and produce mucus. A secondary bacterial infection may occur, in which the sputum (bronchial secretions) may contain pus. People whose cough and/or fever continues for more than seven days should visit a medical practitioner. Chronic bronchitis may result from prolonged exposure to bronchial irritants. Cigarette smoking, environmental toxins, and inhaled allergens can all cause chronic irritation of the bronchi. The cells lining the bronchi produce excess mucus in response to the chronic irritation; this excess mucus production can lead to a chronic, productive cough.

Infectious Bronchitis and Its Effect on Egg Production and Egg Quality
Gary D. Butcher and Richard Miles Infectious bronchitis (IB) can he a devastating disease to any poultry operation. It affects chickens of all ages, types, and breeds. The disease is caused by a coronavirus which is known to have a high mutation rate. Thus, many serotypes (and subtypes) of IB virus exist in the United States and throughout the world. The arrival of new IB variants poses a continuous problem for the poultry industry. The virus enters the body by the inhalation or conjunctival route. Infectious bronchitis is considered to be a highly contagious respiratory disease. Characteristically accompanying the disease are mild respiratory signs such as sneezing, snicking, gasping, and a watery discharge from the eyes and nostrils. In the respiratory tract, clear mucus and areas of inflammation are present. The mucus tends to accumulate in the lower part of the trachea and a mucus plug is sometimes found near the bronchi. Normally, if the virus spreads through the flock, all of the birds are affected. Many times the IB virus may spread through the flock without producing obvious clinical signs of disease except a mild cough. However, the virus may trigger a serious, long-lasting respiratory disease if Mycoplasma gallisepticum or Mycoplasma synoviae is present. The disease can be even more severe if complicated by
