Bronchitis - Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is a bronchitis?
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the mucus membranes of the bronchial tubes (the main air passages connecting the trachea or windpipe to the lungs) which causes a persistent cough and produces considerable phlegm. It is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. It is aggravated by exposure to smoke, dust, allergens, strong fumes or chemical irritants.
Acute bronchitis is characterized by sudden onset and short duration (It usually clears up in a few days).
Chronic bronchitis is persistent over a longer period of time and may last several years. It can result from prolonged exposure to bronchial irritants such as cigarette smoke or other respiratory irritants such as allergens, dust, or chemical fumes.
  • What symptoms can be associated with bronchitis?
* Phlegmy Cough (produces considerable yellow, green, or gray phlegm)
* Wheezing
* Shortness of breath or difficult breathing, aggravated by exertion
* Runny nose.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Acute Bronchitis (bron-KITE-is) is swelling and irritation of the windpipe (trachea) or the airways to the lungs. It occurs most often in the winter and usually starts as a cold. The cold then spreads from the nose and throat to the windpipe and airways.
Causes
This disease is usually caused by germs (virus or bacteria) spread through the air or by contact with someone who is infected. Other causes are allergies or breathing air that contains chemical fumes, dust, or smoke. Your chances of getting bronchitis increase if you have lung disease, smoke, go out in cold, humid weather, do not eat healthy foods, or have become run down from another illness.
Signs/Symptoms
The most common symptom is a dry cough. Later in the illness the cough may bring up sputum. Other complaints may include a low fever (less than 101 degrees F (38.3 degrees C), burning chest pain or pressure behind the breastbone, noisy breathing (wheezing), and trouble breathing.
Care
Most people can be treated at home. Care may include cough medicine to control the cough (suppressants) and cough expectorants to thin the sputum. Antibiotics may also be needed to fight an infection caused by bacteria. You may need to be put into the hospital if you get pneumonia or chronic bronchitis, or if you fail to get better.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Chronic bronchitis is one of the lung disorders classified as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In bronchitis, tissue in the airways leading to the lungs swells up, making the passages narrower. Chronic bronchitis affects the larger airways first, later reaching the rest of them.
Causes
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause. Others are air pollution, allergies, and infections. Dust or chemical-filled air at work can cause bronchitis. The disease becomes more likely as we get older.
Signs/Symptoms
The main sign is a cough that lasts for at least 3 months, two years in a row. Other signs are trouble breathing, coughing up thick sputum, wheezing, and chest tightness. As chronic bronchitis worsens, the skin and nailbeds become pale or a bluish color. You may also have repeated lung infections and swelling in your hands and feet.

What is Bronchitis
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining in the bronchial tubes. This is the airways that connect the windpipe (trachea) to the lungs. The respiratory system is covered and protected by a mucus-producing lining. When a person contacts bronchitis, it is often painful and hard for air to pass through in and out of the lungs when breathing.
Symptoms of Bronchitis

The main sign of bronchitis is a cough that brings up yellowish-gray or green mucus (sputum). Mucus itself is normal. Your airways produce at least an ounce of normal secretions everyday.
Prevention of Bronchitis

If you have frequent or repeated attacks of bronchitis, the culprit may be the environment of where you live or work in. Combination of cold, damp locations, pollutions or smoke can make you susceptible to bronchitis whether it is acute or chronic.

From the American Lung Association Chronic Bronchitis
What Is Chronic Bronchitis? Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes. These tubes, the bronchi, connect the windpipe with the lungs. When the bronchi are inflamed and/or infected, less air is able to flow to and from the lungs and a heavy mucus or phlegm is coughed up. This is bronchitis. Many people suffer a brief attack of acute bronchitis with cough and mucus production when they have severe colds. Acute bronchitis is usually not associated with fever. Chronic bronchitis is defined by the presence of a mucus-producing cough most days of the month, three months of a year for two successive years without other underlying disease to explain the cough. It may precede or accompany pulmonary emphysema. What Causes Chronic Bronchitis? Cigarette smoking is by far the most common cause of chronic bronchitis. The bronchial tubes of people with chronic bronchitis may also have been irritated initially by bacterial or viral infections. Air pollution and industrial dusts are also causes. Once the bronchial tubes have been irritated over a long period of time, excessive mucus is produced constantly, the lining of the bronchial tubes becomes thickened, an irritating cough develops, air flow may be hampered, and the lungs are endangered. The bronchial tubes then make an ideal breeding place for infections.

    Asthma and Bronchitis
Obstructive and allergic lung diseases affect many cats and are sometimes called "asthma," "bronchitis," or "bronchial asthma." Unfortunately, these diseases are not easily classified and probably represent a variety of lung disorders. They do share a common finding of "hyper-responsive" (over-reactive) airways. When the airway of the cat is sensitive to certain stimuli, exposure to these agents leads to narrowing of the airways . The inciting agents are usually direct irritants to the airways or things which provoke an allergic response in the respiratory tract. Regardless of the cause, the end-result is the same: muscle spasms in the bronchi (breathing tubes), buildup of mucus, and accumulation of cellular material. In particular, the inability to clear the bronchi of this material leaves the cat susceptible to secondary infections.

    BRONCHITIS
Bronchitis is an infection of the main air passages in the upper lungs. It can be caused by a cold virus or bacteria, so it doesn’t necessarily need antibiotics. It almost never requires an urgent after-hours call to your doctor. How can I tell if my child has bronchitis?
Parents often come into the office so the doctor can check if their child has bronchitis because there is a misconception that bronchitis is a severe illness in kids and must be treated with antibiotics. Parents can actually determine on their own if a child has bronchitis. Here is how:
    • Junky sounding cough
    • Child coughs up and spits up thick green or yellow mucus
    • Younger kids won’t cough up and spit out mucus. Instead, they cough it up into the throat and swallow it.
    • Child complains of chest pains during coughing
    • Rattling breathing sounds that come and go.
When are antibiotics needed for bronchitis?
If your child has fever over 101 for more than 3 days, chest pains with coughing, a junky sounding cough, and rattling sounds with breathing, then this may be bacterial bronchitis and an antibiotic may be needed after your doctor examines your child. Your doctor will also listen to the chest to see if a more severe infection is present. Should I page my doctor after-hours or go to the ER to get antibiotics?

Chronic bronchitis is an inflammation of the main air passages (bronchi) to the lungs, which results in the production of excess mucous, a reduction in the amount of airflow in and out of the lungs and shortness of breath. In chronic bronchitis, there is excessive bronchial mucus with a productive cough for three months or more over two consecutive years without any other disease that could account for these symptoms.

    What is acute bronchitis?
Acute (ie recent onset) bronchitis is an inflammation of the lower respiratory passages (bronchi).
    What causes acute bronchitis?
The usual cause is an infection due to a virus . The viruses responsible for acute bronchitis include those that might otherwise only cause a cold , but in bronchitis they spread further down the respiratory tree. The bronchial lining, already damaged by this infection, is then open to secondary attack by bacteria.
People who have underlying lung problems, such as chronic (ie long-standing) bronchitis, are more likely to get acute bronchitis as their lung defence mechanism against infection is lower than normal. Smoking is the commonest reason for this to happen.
