Chronic bronchitis What is chronic bronchitis? It is a persisting inflammation of the bronchial tree (air passages) of the lungs. It is a potentially dangerous problem because it starts so quietly that many people do not realise that they have it. Repeated irritation thickens and damages the delicate lining of these important tubes. This leads to lots of mucus and thus narrowing of the tubes. What are the symptoms? The main symptom is a morning cough with sputum (phlegm). Smokers may consider this to be a normal smokers' cough, but there is nothing normal about it. As time goes by, this productive cough increases. Later on, wheezing and breathlessness become a problem. If you are breathless when you exert yourself, you probably have significant lung damage. What are the causes?
  • Smoking is the main cause. People who work in dusty atmospheres are also at risk. Air pollution is a minor factor.
At first the bronchitis gets worse with bad colds or influenza, but eventually even a mild cold can bring on a nasty flare-up. Colds or other infections can cause deterioration, especially in winter. However, chronic bronchitis is not caused by chronic infection. It is usually caused by chronic irritation from smoke. What are the risks?

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi (the air passages that extend from the windpipe into the lungs) which may be caused by viruses, mycoplasma, bacteria, smoking or inhalation of chemical pollutants or dust. The cells that line the bronchi have tiny hairs (cilia) that trap and eliminate pollutants. When these cells become overly irritated, they stop functioning. Consequently, the air passages become clogged by debris, and irritation increases. In response, a heavy secretion of mucous develops, which causes the characteristic cough of bronchitis. Brief bouts of acute bronchitis may evolve from a severe cold or flu, but may also begin without having had an infection. If you have underlying asthma, bronchitis may precipitate an asthma attack. Even if you have no history of asthma, bronchitis may trigger some asthma-like symptoms, such as wheezing and shortness of breath. Smoking is frequently associated with chronic bronchitis. What are the symptoms of bronchitis?

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, or bronchi (the air passages that extend from the windpipe into the lungs). The inflammation may be caused by a virus, bacteria, smoking or the inhalation of chemical pollutants or dust. When the cells of the bronchial-lining tissue are irritated beyond a certain point, the tiny hairs (cilia) within them, which normally trap and eliminate pollutants, stop functioning. Consequently, the air passages become clogged by debris and irritation increases. In response, a heavy secretion of mucus develops, which causes the characteristic cough of bronchitis. ACUTE BRONCHITIS
Brief bouts of acute bronchitis often evolve from a severe cold. This disorder may also follow or accompany the flu, or it may begin without having had an infection. Acute bronchitis usually lasts about 10 days. Severe cases may also cause general malaise and chest pain. CHRONIC BRONCHITIS
Chronic bronchitis is defined as excessive mucus secretion in the bronchi and a chronic or recurrent mucus-producing cough that lasts three or more months and recurs year after year. In diagnosing chronic bronchitis, it is important to rule out heart disease, lung infections, cancer and other disorders that may produce bronchitis-like symptoms. Chronic bronchitis may result from a series of attacks of acute bronchitis, or it may evolve gradually because of heavy smoking or the inhalation of air contaminated with other pollutants in the environment.

What is COPD?
Doctors use the term COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) for two different diseases - emphysema and chronic bronchitis . Many people with COPD may have a combination of these two diseases which are most often caused by heavy, long-time cigarette smoking.
COPD can also include chronic asthma , which is a hypersensitivity of the air passages. Chronic bronchitis emphysema , and asthma all have one thing in common: they limit the flow of air into and out of your lungs. You may cough, wheeze, have a large amount of mucus production, and feel short of breath. The more you know about your disease the better you will be able to participate in managing your own health and living with your lung disease. Continue
Always consult your doctor if you feel you need medical advice or treatment.

BRONCHITIS BENEFICIAL HERBS Alternate among several of the following herbs to get all of their medicinal benefits.
  • Lobelia is a very effective expectorant and is used in the treatment of bronchitis Hollyhock, marsh mallow and pleurisy root are good for irritated conditions of the mucous membranes, especially bronchitis Inhaling the vapors of eucalyptus oil from a vaporizer produces a stimulating expectorant and helps to relieve chronic bronchitis. Other herbs that may help relieve bronchitis include cinnamon, thyme, wall germander, ginger, rosemary, and cloves. Alcohol-free echinacea and goldenseal extract helps to fight viruses and bacteria and enhance the immune system. Goldenseal relieves congestion and is soothing to inflamed mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes, throat, nasal passages, and sinuses. Caution: Do not take goldenseal on a daily basis for more than a week at a time, and do not use during pregnancy. Do not give goldenseal to children under two. Do not use goldenseal without consulting a physician if you have had heart disease, diabetes, glaucoma, a stroke, or high blood pressure. Grindelia, yerba santa, fenugreek tea and horehound are all good expectorants relieving mucous congestion of the lungs and bronchia

Chronic Bronchitis What is chronic bronchitis?
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) COPD is a term that refers to a large group of lung diseases which can interfere with normal breathing. It is estimated that 11 percent of the US population has COPD. The two most common conditions of COPD are chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The causes of COPD are not fully understood. It is generally agreed that the most important cause of chronic bronchitis and emphysema is cigarette smoking. Causes such as air pollution and occupational exposures may play a role, especially when combined with cigarette smoking. Heredity also plays a contributing role in some patients' emphysema, and is especially important in a rare form due to alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency. Symptoms
Patients with chronic bronchitis usually have cough and sputum for many years before they develop shortness of breath.

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, or bronchi, which connect the windpipe with the lungs. When the bronchi are inflamed and/or infected, less air is able to flow to and from the lungs and a heavy mucus or phlegm is formed in the airways.
Acute bronchitis is usually a short illness that commonly develops from a severe cold or following other viral infections and is characterised by cough with green sputum and a soreness in the centre of the chest and perhaps fever and some (usually mild) shortness of breath.
Chronic bronchitis is defined by the presence of a mucus-producing cough most days of the month, three months of a year for two successive years without other underlying disease to explain the cough. People with chronic bronchitis also have varying degrees of breathing difficulties. Periodically these people may get infections in their lungs which makes their breathing problems worse. Sometimes chronic bronchitis is called ‘chronic obstructive lung disease’ or ‘chronic obstructive airways disease’. These terms reflect that the main problem is difficulty getting the air in and out of the chest and that is what causes the problems with breathing.

Alternate Names : Inflammation - Bronchi Definition Bronchitis is an inflammation of the main air passages to the lungs. Bronchitis may be sudden (acute) and short-lived, or chronic, meaning that it lasts a long time and often recurs. To be classified as chronic, you must have a cough with mucus most days of the month for three months out of the year.

Sometimes, you may get what is called a secondary bacterial infection. This means that bacteria are infecting the airways, in addition to the virus. The already inflamed area is one in which bacteria like to grow.

D isease (condition with signs and symptoms) COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has no single definition. COPD is a disease of the lungs. It is caused by blocking of the airways in the lungs, and it has no cure. COPD refers to a number of chronic lung disorders that obstruct the airways. Asthma is is not usually considered a form of COPD because "pure" asthma symptoms can be reversed. COPD is permanent. The most common form of COPD is a combination of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Chronic bronchitis occurs when the airways in your lungs have become narrow and partly clogged with mucus. Chronic Bronchitis is the presence of cough and sputum for more than three months for two consecutive years. If there is airways obstruction in addition to chronic bronchitis, COPD is indicated. Emphysema occurs when some of the air sacs deep in your lungs have been damaged.
