Overview Just when you thought you were finally over a cold, your chest starts to feel sore and you develop an irritating cough. Later, you might get the chills or a slight fever. If these signs and symptoms sound familiar, you might have acute bronchitis, a condition that occurs when the inner walls that line the main air passageways of your lungs become infected and inflamed. Bronchitis often follows a respiratory infection such as a cold. And just as most people get occasional colds, virtually everyone has bronchitis at least once. Signs and symptoms Still, these signs can be deceptive. You don't always produce sputum when you have bronchitis, and children often swallow coughed-up material, so parents may not know there's a secondary infection.

Supporting Research Bronchitis is a respiratory tract infection (viral or bacterial) that causes inflammation of the mucous lining of the bronchial tubes. Acute bronchitis generally is reversible. Chronic bronchitis, often referred to as smoker's cough, is not usually reversible. Signs and Symptoms Acute bronchitis:
  • Cough that produces mucus or pus Burning sensation in the chest Sore throat and fever (with some types) Fatigue Blue-tinted lips Wheezing Weight gain
Chronic bronchitis:
  • Chronic cough that produces excessive amounts of mucus or pus Wheezing, shortness of breath Present for three consecutive months, two years in a row
What Causes It? Acute bronchitis is usually caused by a virus, but can also be caused by bacteria. Generally, acute bronchitis is passed from person to person. The main causes of chronic bronchitis are cigarette smoking and prolonged exposure to air pollution or other irritants such as dust and grain. Risk Factors
  • Cigarette smoking Severe pneumonia early in life Being a man over age 50
What to Expect at Your Provider's Office Your provider will listen to your chest and back, look at your throat, and may draw blood and take a culture of the secretions from your lungs.

What causes acute bronchitis?
Acute bronchitis is almost always caused by viruses that attack the lining of the bronchial tree and cause infection. As your body fights back against these viruses, more swelling occurs and more mucus is made. It takes time for your body to kill the viruses and heal the damage to your bronchial tubes. In most cases, the same viruses that cause colds cause acute bronchitis. Research has shown that bacterial infection is much less common in bronchitis than we used to think. Very rarely, an infection caused by a fungus can cause acute bronchitis. Return to top
How do people get acute bronchitis?
If you smoke or are around damaging fumes (such as those in certain kinds of factories), you are more likely to get acute bronchitis and to have it longer. This is because your bronchial tree is already damaged. Return to top

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchus usually caused by an infection. This often includes the trachea and the bronchioles Bronchiolitis is an inflammation of the bronchioles . Generally a mild condition that eventually heals totally, however, bronchitis can also be chronic. In this condition there is diffused inflammation of the air passages in the lungs, leading to decreased uptake of oxygen by the lungs and increased mucus production. Two main types of bronchitis exist :
  • Infectious Bronchitis
Caused by viruses and bacteria (e.g. Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia ). Most frequent in Winter. Smokers and those with chronic sinusitis , bronchochietasis, allergies and children with enlarged tonsils and adenoids may experience recurrent infections.
  • Irritative Bronchitis Caused by dust, pollen , strong acid fumes, ammonia, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, sulphur dioxide, ozone, tobacco smoke.
Treatment includes aspirin for adults, acetaminophen for children and

What Happens With COPD Chronic Bronchitis
    If you have chronic bronchitis:
    • the cells lining the inside of the bronchi are continuously inflamed
    • the airways in your lungs have become narrow and partly clogged with mucus
The bronchi are air passages connecting the windpipe (trachea) with the sacs of the lung (alveoli), where oxygen is taken up by the blood. Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi. This inflammation causes excessive production of mucus and swelling of the bronchial walls. Airflow into and out of the lungs is obstructed. With chronic bronchitis, the mucus cannot be cleared. Instead of helping to clean the lungs, it causes obstruction in the airways. The mucus is thicker and more difficult to cough up. This provides a means for bacteria to settle in the lower airways and increases the risk of infection. Chronic bronchitis is caused mainly by cigarette smoke. It is characterized by:
    • persistent cough
    • production of mucus
The degree of breathlessness experienced depends on the degree of congestion of the airways and inflammation of the bronchial mucus membranes. Defence Mechanisms of the Lungs Emphysema

    Bronchitis
Bronchitis is classified as "acute" or "chronic." Each is a separate disease. Most university-age students have "acute" bronchitis.
    Chronic Bronchitis
Chronic bronchitis is a degenerative disease. To diagnose this disease, one must have a cough for at least three months of the year for two years. This is also associated with chronic shortness of breath. Chronic bronchitis is characterized by recurrent bouts of worsening of the illness. Occupational exposure to airborne irritants, air pollution, cigarette smoking or being around second-hand smoke, and recurrent acute bronchitis are all contributing factors to this disease. Genetic inheritance of the tendency to get this problem is a strong contributing factor. Chronic bronchitis is not primarily an infectious disease. It is a degenerative disease of the lungs. Treatment depends on the cause and the severity of the disease. It has some similarities to asthma
    Acute Bronchitis
Acute bronchitis is an infectious disease where the infectious process is primarily in the bronchial tubes of the lungs. This can be either viral or bacterial. Acute bronchitis is more common than chronic bronchitis among university-age individuals, especially among a non-smoking population like we have at BYU.
Symptoms of acute bronchitis are a severe dry cough , temperature, sore throat , muscle aches, and a burning pressure in the center of the chest.

    Bronchitis
    Definition
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the air passages between the nose and the lungs, including the windpipe or trachea and the larger air tubes of the lung that bring air in from the trachea (bronchi). Bronchitis can either be of brief duration (acute) or have a long course (chronic). Acute bronchitis is usually caused by a viral infection, but can also be caused by a bacterial infection and can heal without complications. Chronic bronchitis is a sign of serious lung disease that may be slowed but cannot be cured. Description
Although acute and chronic bronchitis are both inflammations of the air passages, their causes and treatments are different. Acute bronchitis is most prevalent in winter. It usually follows a viral infection, such as a cold or the flu, and can be accompanied by a secondary bacterial infection. Acute bronchitis resolves within two weeks, although the cough may persist longer. Acute bronchitis, like any upper airway inflammatory process, can increase a person's likelihood of developing pneumonia Anyone can get acute bronchitis, but infants, young children, and the elderly are more likely to get the disease because people in these age groups generally have weaker immune systems. Smokers and people with heart or other lung diseases are also at higher risk of developing acute bronchitis. Individuals exposed to chemical fumes or high levels of air pollution also have a greater chance of developing acute bronchitis.

    Q:
You've commented on several seasonal hazards but have not mentioned bronchitis. Just what is it and what should you do if you have it?
A: Bronchitis is an inflammation of the small airways in the lungs. Usually this is associated with a moist cough that is mucus producing. In the vast majority of people with this condition, the cause can be traced to a cold virus. As long as there is no fever or unusual shortness of breath, the treatment of choice is clear liquids and over-the-counter cough suppressants. Historically we physicians have probably over-prescribed antibiotics for this condition and may have unintentionally contributed to the appearance of some bacterial resistance. The presence of a fever, the existence of a chronic disease such as asthma or emphysema, severe shortness of breath, or a weak immune system may warrant further investigation. A chest x-ray may be helpful and the prescription of antibiotics may be necessary. Symptoms What Are the Symptoms?
    Acute bronchitis:
    • Hacking cough.
    • Yellow, white, or green phlegm, usually appearing 24 to 48 hours after a cough.
    • Fever, chills.
    • Soreness and tightness in chest.
    • Some pain below breastbone during deep breathing.
    • Some shortness of breath.
    Chronic bronchitis:
    • Persistent cough producing yellow, white, or green phlegm (for at least three months of the year, and for more than two consecutive years).
    • Wheezing, some breathlessness.
    Call Your Doctor If:
    • Your cough is so persistent or severe that it interferes with sleep or daily activities or leads to persistent chest pain; you could be damaging sensitive air sacs in your lungs.
    • Your symptoms last more than a week, and your mucus becomes darker and thicker, increases in volume, or turns bloody.
    • You display symptoms of acute bronchitis and have chronic lung or heart problems or are infected with the virus that causes AIDS; respiratory infections can leave you vulnerable to more serious lung diseases, such as pneumonia.
    • You have great difficulty breathing. This symptom, sometimes mistakenly associated with bronchitis, could signal asthma, emphysema, tuberculosis, heart disease, a serious allergic reaction, or cancer.

    What is chronic bronchitis?
Chronic bronchitis is an inflammation, or irritation, of the airways in the lungs. Airways are the tubes in your lungs that air passes through. They are also called bronchial tubes. When the airways are irritated, thick mucus forms in them. The mucus plugs up the airways and makes it hard for you to get air into your lungs. Symptoms of chronic bronchitis include a cough that produces mucus (sometimes called sputum), trouble breathing and a feeling of tightness in your chest. Return to top
    What causes chronic bronchitis?
Cigarette smoking is the main cause of chronic bronchitis. When tobacco smoke is inhaled into the lungs, it irritates the airways and they produce mucus. People who have been exposed for a long time to other things that irritate their lungs, such as chemical fumes, dust and other substances, can also get chronic bronchitis. Return to top
