BEST/TIP Statement of Principles concerning CHRONIC BRONCHITIS AND EMPHYSEMA for the purposes of the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986 and Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 and of the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986 (the VEA): Kind of injury, disease or death chronic bronchitis and emphysema and death from chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema , either alone or in combination. "chronic bronchitis" means a respiratory tract disorder characterised by excessive mucus production sufficient to cause cough and sputum for at least three months of each year for at least two consecutive years, where such mucus production is not attributable to another respiratory disease. "emphysema" means a bilateral and diffuse respiratory tract disorder which is characterised by distension of airspaces distal to the terminal bronchiole with destruction of alveolar septa, and without obvious fibrosis. This definition excludes isolated emphysematous bleb and surgical, traumatic, unilateral, focal or localised emphysema, and Swyer-James syndrome (also known as MacLeod's syndrome or hyperlucent lung syndrome). Basis for determining the factors chronic bronchitis and emphysema and death from chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema can be related to relevant service rendered by veterans or members of the Forces under the VEA, or members under the

http://oac.med.jhmi.edu/res_phys/Encyclopedia/Bronchitis/Bronchitis.HTML
Bronchitis
Bronchitis is a condition which is clinically defined as a chronic cough with mucus production most months of the year. The mucus secretions and inflammation in the bronchi tend to narrow the airways and provide an obstacle to airflow, thus increasing the resistance of the airways. In this manner bronchitis may cause obstructive pulmonary symptoms. On pulmonary tests, a bronchitic may present a decreased FEV1 and FEV1/FVC. However, unlike the other common obstructive disorders, asthma and emphysema, bronchitis rarely causes a high residual volume. This is because the air flow obstruction found in bronchitis is due to increased resistance, which does not generally cause the airways to collapse prematurely and trap air in the lungs. Richard was sent to an uncle in Yorkshire where he was treated very badly.
Cobden received very little formal schooling and at the age of fourteen became a clerk in the textile industry . A year later he was working as a commercial traveller. After developing knowledge of the cotton trade , Cobden decided to start his own business. In 1828 he joined with two other young men to start a company selling calico prints in London . The business was an immediate success and by 1832 Richard Cobden was living in an affluent part of Manchester
Cobden had made enough money to spend time travelling. Between 1833 and 1837 he visited France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, America, Egypt, Greece and Russia. Cobden collected information about these countries and in 1835 published his book

    55. Bronchitis
Article about the two types of bronchitis, acute and chronic.
    http://www.harthosp.org/HealthInfo/scripts/scr0519.htm
    Bronchitis
There are two types of bronchitis: acute and chronic. Acute bronchitis is the inflammation of the mucous membrane that lines the bronchi (brawnk-eye), or main passages of the lungs, and usually only lasts a few days. It is often caused by a viral infection and may begin after you develop a cold or sore throat. The first symptom is an uncomfortable cough which often produces a thick yellowish or grayish phlegm (flem). Other symptoms include pain in the upper chest, wheezing, and fever. Make yourself comfortable and avoid cold air, tobacco smoke, and air pollution. Inhaling steam from a running shower or vaporizer may help to clear nasal passages. Your doctor may also recommend cough medicine, antibiotics, and bed rest. Chronic bronchitis usually persists for long periods of time and occurs most often in heavy smokers or as the result of recurring episodes of acute bronchitis. People with chronic bronchitis should not smoke and should avoid cold, polluted, and smoky environments. They should also stay away from people with colds, which could lead to another attack of bronchitis. Treatment depends on how far the disease has progressed, but will probably include an inhaler and antibiotics. For more information about bronchitis, contact your health care provider.

    • Bronchitis is a respiratory illness. An infection causes an inflammation of the bronchial tubes. (The bronchial tubes connect the windpipe to the lungs.) Bronchitis can be either acute or chronic. Symptoms of acute bronchitis come on quickly and may be severe. The condition lasts no more than a few days to a few weeks. Chronic bronchitis lasts longer than acute bronchitis. It may last months or years.
    What causes it?
    • Acute bronchitis is usually caused by a viral infection but can also be caused by a bacterial infection. Gastroesophageal reflux disease , also known as heartburn, can lead to bronchitis. The most common cause of chronic bronchitis is smoking.
